Internship for students: where to start by year, course and format

What counts as an internship for a student in India?

In UGC's undergraduate Curriculum and Credit Framework, an internship is a course in which the student does professional work, or cooperative education, with an organisation outside the college, usually under an expert from that organisation. Two conditions carry the weight. The host sits outside your campus, and someone there supervises you.

The host does not have to be a company. UGC's 2023 internship and research internship guidelines for undergraduates name start-ups, corporates, farmlands, artisans, gig workers, NGOs, research and development organisations and other higher education institutions among the workplaces a student's classroom learning should meet.

What makes it count towards your degree is permission. Those guidelines ask a student holding an offer to speak to the internship supervisor and get the parent institution's permission first, then join. Work done without that step can still teach you a lot. It may simply never reach your marksheet.

When does your course expect an internship, year by year?

A UG degree student under UGC must complete an internship of 60 to 120 hours once the 4th semester is over, under UGC's 2023 internship guidelines. For AICTE-approved B.Tech and diploma programmes, the All India Council for Technical Education places work after the 2nd, 4th and 6th semesters in its AICTE Internship Policy: Guidelines and Procedures.

The two bodies count a credit differently, so never convert one into the other. Under UGC, one internship credit equals two hours of engagement every week, so a 15-week semester gives each credit 30 hours; 2 to 4 credits is therefore the 60 to 120 hours. AICTE sets its credit at no less than 40 to 45 working hours, and a full-timer is expected to give 40 to 45 hours a week.

The table sets both schedules against the summer after each year of study. A cell that says "no row" means the schedule table in that document has no entry for that year.

The UG Certificate row is worded two ways in the same framework. Section 5.1.7 calls the exit requirement a 4-credit "work-based learning/internship" in the summer term, and section 3.2.3 calls it 40 credits plus one 4-credit vocational course in the summer vacation of the first year. The framework's own credit table accepts either: 4 credits in work-based vocational courses or an internship or apprenticeship. Your university's regulations say which it offers.

First year is the thinnest year on paper. AICTE's list for the summer after the 2nd semester includes training with higher institutions, soft skill training organised by the placement cell, work at the incubation cell and learning in departmental labs, all inside the college or at another institution.

Which internship fits your course?

The internship that fits is one your programme will accept, in a setting close to your subject. For the after-4th-semester slot, UGC's Table 1 suggests hands-on training or a short research project, with activities such as social projects and studying enterprises or farmers. AICTE's list for that summer is industry, government, NGOs, MSMEs, rural work, innovation and entrepreneurship.

The UGC framework's own list of hosts reads like a map by stream. It names labs with faculty, firms and local industry, health and allied fields, panchayats and municipalities, elected representatives including Parliament, the media, and artists and crafts persons. A B.Com student starts at the business end, a B.Sc student at the lab end, and a BA student at the government or media end.

The 2023 guidelines add project ideas that suit non-technical degrees. They suggest assessing the effectiveness of government and non-government schemes, and live case studies matched to the course, giving law, management and social work as examples. A college's nodal officer may also place students with local government for census, survey and election work.

Can you do an internship for students online?

Yes, and both regulators' documents make room for it. UGC's 2023 guidelines name "Hybrid model learning", mixing physical and digital modes, as an objective of an internship, and say a student who fails to find a physical placement should be offered a digital or group one by the host institute. Table 2 of the AICTE Internship Policy lists "Online Internship" among the choices for the summers after the 4th and 6th semesters.

Finding one is the easy part. The government's National Internship Portal, run by AICTE, lets you narrow postings to "Remote & Hybrid", and the remote section of Internshala held 2,330 listings when checked on 25 September 2026, a count that moves daily.

Whether it counts is the harder part. The permission step in the UGC guidelines applies to an online host as much as to an office, so ask your department before you start; the detail is in getting UGC credit for an online internship.

Check who pays whom. The government's Skill India Digital Hub internship page offers a "Mode of Internship" filter set to Online, an "Educational Qualification" filter with 10th, 12th, Graduation and Post Graduation, and an "Internship Fee" filter with two settings, Free and Paid. Read that field on any listing before you apply.

Format also decides your week. AICTE's policy expects internships to run full-time over summer vacations and part-time while classes are on. UGC's guidelines let a student carry on interning in term only if attendance and assignments do not suffer. If you plan to intern during term, count your hours against that condition first.

Where do student internships come from, and which route suits you?

For college credit, start with your own college's training and placement cell; for pay, start with the PM Internship Scheme, if you are eligible. Student internships come from five routes, each judged below on the same five tests: whether it pays, whether your college will credit it, whether it teaches subject-specific technical skills, whether a first-year can use it, and whether it can be done online.

• Your college's training and placement cell or department. Under AICTE's policy the cell arranges internships after semesters two, four and six or seven, and a student who finds a host alone hands in the host's written confirmation via the department, so credit is built in. Pay and technical depth depend on the host. It loses on choice: the slots and dates are the college's.
• AICTE's National Internship Portal. The government site says it lists internships for AICTE, UGC, IGNOU and other students, registration is free, and remote postings can be filtered. Its home page says stipends are "declared upfront" and promises credits for your ABC account. It loses on college approval: UGC's guidelines still ask for your own institution's permission before you join.
• The PM Internship Scheme. A 22 April 2026 release from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs sets monthly financial assistance at no less than ₹9,000 at companies across sectors, and lets final-year UG and PG students aged 18 to 25 apply, with an NOC from their institution, if they meet the scheme's existing criteria. It loses on first-years: the release opens it to final-year students.
• Commercial listing boards such as Internshala. Volume is the draw: that same work-from-home page counted 2,330 postings on the day checked, with unpaid postings next to paid ones and each employer writing its own terms. Technical depth depends on the listing. It loses on credit and checking: no college has vetted the host, so you verify the organisation and seek approval yourself.
• Applying to a non-profit's programme on your own. Pledge A Smile Foundation (the publisher of this guide) runs an online internship that is open to students of any stream and free to apply to and to do. Interns own a weekly target, send a weekly report and get feedback on it. There is a performance-based stipend and a certificate on completion. It does not teach subject-specific technical skills.

What should an internship for students with certificate give you?

An internship with a certificate should give you a completion certificate, a project report and an assessment. Under UGC's 2023 guidelines the internship supervisor is responsible for the intern receiving a completion certificate, a single project report follows the internship, and the college marks it on how innovative the project was, the presentation and attendance.

AICTE asks for more. Each student keeps a file of documentary proof of the activities done, evaluated by the faculty mentor, the placement officer, an industry supervisor or another person the policy's Table 2 names. The certificate is one page in that file.

A certificate is only as good as the work it records. A college can hold its dates against your report and attendance, and an interviewer can ask what you did in week three. Keep dated weekly notes of tasks and outputs while you work, because they are what the report is written from.

The UGC guidelines ask the mentor, whether the college or the student found them, to guide the student digitally or in person throughout, check the student's performance every fortnight, and hand over a certificate or report once it ends. A certificate from someone who never checked your work in between is a thinner document.

What is open to students in 2026, and what is not?

In 2026 the PM Internship Scheme's pilot phase opened to final-year students. A PIB notice of 22 April 2026 from the corporate affairs ministry extended the pilot phase to final-year graduate and postgraduate students aged 18 to 25, and said the third round of the pilot was then underway, with firms adding postings as they went.

The release asks a final-year applicant for an NOC in which the college confirms that academics will not suffer from the internship. The signatory can be the principal, a dean, the department head or the training and placement officer, and the older eligibility rules still apply. Its FAQ page, though, still describes the pilot as it began, with a 12-month term paying ₹5,000 monthly to those aged 21 to 24. See which terms pminternship.mca.gov.in shows before applying. A ministry programme can set a year of study as well. The Ministry of External Affairs internship page says internships at MEA headquarters are generally open to Indian citizens holding at least a graduate degree when they apply, and to students presently in the final year of graduation where an internship is a mandatory part of their final year curriculum. Age must not exceed 25 years as on 31 December of the year of internship.

It runs two terms of six months each, April to September and October to March, and each term covers a fixed list of states and union territories. The Ministry engages a maximum of 30 interns during each term, each for a minimum of one month and a maximum of three, and pays each intern an honorarium of INR 10,000 per month towards basic costs.

Selection there starts from marks. The same page says state-wise merit lists are drawn up from +2 and graduation results, separately for men and women, before a personal interview by videoconferencing. A first-year or second-year student is not eligible yet, so note the term dates for later.

Timing matters as much as eligibility. AICTE's model procedure has the placement cell write to industry asking it to allot 4-to-6-week slots over the summer vacation, before the placement officer allocates students to them. Ask your cell when its request letters go out, and have your details ready before then.

The other four routes set eligibility posting by posting or through your college's own rules, so check each one for your year.
