Internship for 2nd year students: a month-by-month plan before placements

Which summer counts, and what does your college expect?

Table 1 in the AICTE Internship Policy: Guidelines and Procedures, the All India Council for Technical Education's document, puts a 4 to 6 week internship in the summer vacation after the 4th semester, for 4 to 6 credits, in settings from industry and government to an NGO, an MSME or rural work. For a student now in the 3rd semester, that is the summer of 2027.

That table is AICTE's model for technical degree and diploma programmes. Degrees under the University Grants Commission follow a different document. The UGC's internship guidelines for undergraduates set the bar for UG degrees in hours: 60 to 120 of them, after the 4th semester, and the document calls that internship mandatory. It also lets 2 to 4 credits of the degree be assigned to internship.

Both documents place that internship after the 4th semester, the end of the 2nd year, so you can do an internship in 2nd year under either, measured differently: weeks and 4 to 6 credits under AICTE's table, hours under UGC's. The earlier summer, after the 2nd semester, is different. AICTE's table fills it with 3 to 4 weeks of inter or intra institutional activities, such as training with higher institutions, soft skill training by the placement cell, or work in a departmental lab. Is any summer internship 2026 for 2nd year students still open?

No. Summer 2026 has passed. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur's SURGE research internship, for example, took registrations from 2 February to 22 February 2026, declared results on 23 March 2026 and ran from 11 May to 10 July 2026, according to its home page.

Use those dates as a guide to the rhythm only. A programme that opened in February 2026 may open around the same time in 2027, but only its own 2027 notice settles that. Keep a list of programmes you want, and check each one's page from January.

October and November 2026: what should you apply to first?

For an internship for 2nd year BTech students, apply first to the Science Academies Summer Research Fellowship Programme (SRFP) 2027. Its SRFP 2027 instructions close online applications on 30 November 2026 and list BE, BTech and BCA students in the II and III years as eligible, for two months with a guide in summer 2027.

The same list admits BS and BSc students in the II year only, BStat and BMath in the II year only, and BArch in the II, III and IV years. Arts and commerce degrees do not appear among the eligible courses. Students need at least 65% on average across core subjects, languages excluded, from Class X onwards, counting the years completed.

The application asks for a write-up of roughly 150 to 250 words on what you want to learn and work on, scanned mark sheets from Class X onwards in JPEG form, and the contact details of a current teacher. The Academy approaches that teacher for the recommendation letter, so ask them in October, not the week of the deadline.

According to the SRFP 2027 announcement, the Academies expect to send selection results around March to April 2027, and fellows get a train fare and a monthly fellowship whose amount the announcement does not state.

December and January: what can you build, and which fellowship closes?

Bengaluru's Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) took applications for its Summer Research Fellowship Programme from 22 December 2025 to 31 January 2026, and the programme admits 2nd-year BTech and BSc students in several subjects. The rest of these two months suits a project of your own.

For an internship for 2nd year engineering students, JNCASR sets eligibility by subject. BE, BTech and BS students in the I, II and III years can apply in Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Chemical Biology and Engineering Sciences; BSc students in the I and II years in the first three of those. Applicants need at least 65% in core subjects (languages excluded) and in aggregate in Class 10 and 12, and at least first class in previous semesters.

Selected students spend 2 continuous months with a scientist at the Centre, on "a stipend of Rs. 10000/- p.m.", with travel paid at "the second sleeper train fare by the shortest route". JNCASR says it receives around 2,000 applications a year and offers about 50 fellowships. The 2027 dates are not yet on its page, so check it from December.

A part-time internship alongside classes is allowed in principle. AICTE's policy treats vacation internships as full-time and term-time ones as part-time, and the UGC guidelines let a student continue an internship provided attendance and other assignments are not affected.

The UGC document also mentions summer and winter breaks as time to extend learning from an internship. For a 3rd-semester student, the winter break is a chance to do a short piece of work in your subject: a small project, a data exercise or a course assignment taken further. It gives your summer applications something concrete to point to.

If you want an internship for 2nd year CSE students next summer, finish one project with its code and a short write-up, so you have something specific to show when a summer host asks what you have built. Winter options are covered separately in the winter internship 2026 guide.

Before you take on any part-time role in term, ask your department whether it will count toward credit, and how, because a department can decline to count work it did not approve in advance.

February to April 2027: which research windows open, and which stay shut?

SURGE at IIT Kanpur, which registered in February in 2026, was shut to a 2nd-year BTech student but open to 2nd-year BSc and BA students. The SURGE 2026 eligibility page took non-IIT Kanpur Indian BTech, BE, BArch and BS students only in the 3rd year, pursuing the V or VI semester.

BSc and BA students had to be pursuing the III or IV semester, with a minimum CPI of 6.0, or 60%, counted up to the last completed semester. A BSc student in the 4th semester in February 2027 would fit that description, if the 2027 rules repeat it.

The SURGE application asks for a research proposal of up to 500 words, two recommendation letters from faculty at your own institute, and transcripts supporting your CPI. The home page lists a payment of administrative fees to confirm registration after results, which in 2026 fell between 23 and 29 March.

If SRFP does not select you when its results arrive, move to listings and your own department that same month.

Which routes are open to a 2nd-year student?

Four routes are open to a 2nd-year student: your college's training and placement cell, a research fellowship such as SRFP, a listing platform or the AICTE internship portal, and a non-profit's own programme. The PM Internship Scheme is closed to a full-time 2nd-year student, because its April 2026 change admits students only in their final year. Judge each on whether you can join, the deadline, credit, pay and subject-specific technical skills.

• College training and placement cell. Open to you if your college runs a 2nd-year summer cycle, with deadlines set by the college. Credit follows the college's own approval process, and pay depends on the host. It loses on reach: the options are only those the cell has lined up.
• Research fellowship such as SRFP or SURGE. SRFP takes 2nd-year BTech and BSc students and closes on 30 November 2026; SURGE took 2nd-year BSc and BA students in 2026. Both build subject skills with a guide. SURGE's Rs 16,000 is limited to funded seats. It loses on selectivity: marks and CPI cut-offs apply.
• Listing platforms such as Internshala, and the AICTE internship portal. Open to anyone who meets a listing's terms, with rolling deadlines. Credit depends on your department's approval, and pay varies by employer. Skills depend on the role. It loses on predictability: pay, hours and supervision change from one listing to the next.
• Applying to a non-profit directly. Pledge A Smile Foundation (the publisher of this guide) runs an online internship that is open to students of any stream and free to apply to and to do. Interns own a weekly target, send a weekly report and get feedback on it. There is a performance-based stipend and a certificate on completion. It does not teach subject-specific technical skills.
• PM Internship Scheme. It pays a monthly sum and a joining grant, and places interns with companies. It loses on eligibility for this reader: the April 2026 change opened it to final-year students, so a full-time 2nd-year student cannot plan the 2027 summer around it.

For a government internship for 2nd year BTech students, or an online one, the AICTE internship portal's home page lists government programmes such as TULIP (Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs), the Indian Army and C-DAC, and a "Remote & Hybrid" category it describes as "Work from your hostel room". Check the year of study each listing accepts before applying.

A workable plan pairs one dated application, such as SRFP, with one rolling route as a fallback. Students coming back to college after a break can also read the guide for women and career-break returners looking for online work.

Is there a paid internship for 2nd year CSE students?

Yes, though not on every route. Internshala's computer science page, read on 25 September 2026, showed 50 listings on its first page; 33 carried a monthly figure and 17 said "Unpaid". The lowest paid one read "₹ 2,000 /month", and the middle value among the lower ends of the 33 figures was ₹8,000. That page is not sorted by year of study, so read each listing's eligibility line before applying.

A research route can pay too. The SURGE funding page says students in its Institute Funded category "may receive a stipend of Rs 16,000/- during the program duration", open to candidates with a CPI of 8.5 or above and limited to 60 participants. The page words it for the programme duration and gives no monthly figure, and self-funded participants are not entitled to any funding.

Google Summer of Code also pays, but its own FAQ answers "Is GSoC an internship or employment?" with "No": participants are "independent developers receiving a stipend". Applicants must be 18 or over at registration, eligible to work in their country of residence and a student or open source beginner, among other conditions in the FAQ.

The GSoC stipend table lists $750, $1500 and $3000 for India, for small, medium and large projects scoped at about 90, 175 and 350 hours, paid in two parts after evaluations. In 2026, contributor applications ran from 16 to 31 March.

JNCASR's fellowship, described above, is paid too, but the Engineering Sciences topics it lists run from computational fluid dynamics and turbulence to heat and mass transfer, so a CSE student should read the research areas before applying.

The PM Internship Scheme's paid places are not open to a full-time 2nd-year student. The pilot scheme guidelines PIB published on 4 October 2024 excluded anyone engaged in full-time education, while admitting those enrolled in online or distance programmes. A PIB release of 22 April 2026 then let students in the last year of a UG or PG degree apply, provided their institution issues an NOC. On the AICTE internship portal, the home page says a stipend is declared "upfront" and goes into the intern's bank account. Whatever the route, get the amount and its unit in writing before you start.

May to July 2027: what paperwork should be ready?

Have your college's approval in hand before the first day. Under the AICTE Internship Policy every student maintains a file of documentary proof covering everything done, and the evaluator may be the training and placement officer (TPO), a faculty mentor, a programme or project head, or the host's industry supervisor.

A host may ask for a no objection certificate from your college; see the NOC letter explainer. SRFP asks each selected student to post an authorisation letter from the Principal or Head of Department, granting permission or leave of absence, to its coordinator in Bengaluru.

During the internship, keep a dated weekly note of what you did, with anything you produced. At the end, ask for a certificate or letter that names the dates, the hours or weeks, and the work. Those three facts let a department match the work against the 4 to 6 weeks or the 60 to 120 hours.
