Internship for women and career-break returners: online and on-site routes

Which routes are open, and what should you compare them on?

Up to 20 women per batch spend two months in Delhi as Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD) interns, and candidates who belong to eight named cities cannot apply. Gates like that one decide more than pay or subject, so compare who qualifies first.

Rate each route on the same five criteria: who qualifies, whether it can be done online, whether it pays, whether it teaches skills from your own subject, and how you apply. Three routes below take women only and four set no condition on gender.

• MWCD's internship. Women only, between 21 and 40 years old, from outside the tier-I cities or from rural India, and enrolled in or linked to an institution. It runs in Delhi, not online, for two months at Rs. 20,000 a month. Interns may be given pilot projects or micro-studies on the ministry's work. You apply on the ministry's portal in a ten-day window.
• DST's WISE Internship in Intellectual Property Rights (WISE-IPR). One year of training in intellectual property for women aged 25 to 45 with a postgraduate degree or PhD in basic or applied sciences. Its stated aim is a core professional skill in that domain. The call runs April to May. The Department of Science and Technology's page does not say whether it is paid or online.
• TCS Rebegin. Open positions for women only, with at least two years of continuous work experience; career breaks are allowed but must be declared, with their length and reasons. These are jobs at TCS across India, filled on merit, so the route is employment rather than an internship. It is not open to a student with no work history.
• The PM Internship Scheme, whose eligibility list sets no condition on gender. Under a 22 April 2026 release on the Press Information Bureau site, a woman aged 18 to 25 can apply, final-year students included if their college gives an NOC, and is paid ₹9,000 a month or more. The FAQ, from the pilot, keeps its older terms: ages 21 to 24 and twelve months, at least six in a real workplace. Either way it is not built as an online route.
• Online volunteering through the UN Volunteers platform. Under the platform's own rules, online volunteers must not be asked to be physically present anywhere, so it is fully remote. It is volunteering rather than an internship, and the skills depend on the assignment chosen. Organisations post assignments for their own work, and you apply to them on the platform.
• Listing platforms. Internshala shows an "Internships for women" filter next to its work-from-home and part-time filters, and its page does not say what puts a listing there. Pay, mode and subject skills are set by each employer, so each listing has to be read on its own. The platform's FAQ says students pay nothing to apply.
• Charities' own programmes. Pledge A Smile Foundation (the publisher of this guide) runs an online internship that is open to students of any stream and free to apply to and to do. Interns own a weekly target, send a weekly report and get feedback on it. There is a performance-based stipend and a certificate on completion. It does not teach subject-specific technical skills.

Each of the seven rules some readers out on at least one criterion. The women-only ones carry the strictest conditions, and none of the three is described as online on its own page.

What is the MWCD internship for women, and who can apply?

The MWCD internship is a two-month placement in the Ministry of Women and Child Development in Delhi, for women students, scholars, social activists and teachers aged 21 to 40 from non-tier-I cities and rural India. The ministry's internship page says applicants must be "currently enrolled in/associated with any university/academic/non-academic institution".

The same page names eight tier-I cities: Pune, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Mumbai and Bengaluru. "Candidates who belong to Tier-I cities are not eligible to apply." The page does not define "belong", so if you study in one of those cities but come from elsewhere, ask the ministry at the research address its page gives before you apply.

It is a paid government internship for women. Each batch takes up to 20 interns, and each intern gets "a lump sum stipend of Rs. 20,000/- per month", which the page totals as Rs. 40,000 for the two months, with travel reimbursed by deluxe or AC bus or 3-tier AC train to join and to go home. A certificate comes only on successful completion, after papers or reports are submitted or presented.

An older guidelines PDF describes a one-month programme with up to 10 interns per batch; the FAQ and the internship portal's criteria page say two months and 20. Go by the portal, where you apply, and its notice for your term.

You apply online on the ministry's Internship Programme portal. A Selection Committee picks the interns and may invite faculty members or subject experts from universities or research institutes to help. Before reporting, each selected intern signs two declarations: that the internship carries no offer of a job, present or future, and a declaration of secrecy.

Men cannot apply. The ministry's FAQ answers "Can male candidates also apply for internship?" with its eligibility line, which opens "The internship is only available for Women".

When do MWCD internship applications open in 2026?

MWCD applications open from the 1st to the 10th of a month that falls two months before each of four terms a year; on that pattern the next window is 1 to 10 December 2026, for February to March 2027. The portal's home page notice, as it read on 25 September 2026, takes its example from the MWCD internship for women 2025 cycle: "1st-10th December 2025 for February-March 2026".

The ministry's FAQ lists all four windows.

No separate notice for the MWCD internship for women 2026 terms was on the portal on 25 September 2026, so the recurring windows are what you can plan on. On that pattern, the September 2026 window for the November to December term closed on 10 September.

The guidelines PDF also says the schedule "may be advanced or postponed" as the ministry decides, so read the portal's notice before you plan around a date.

Any candidate once selected "shall not be eligible to apply for any subsequent term", so choose the term you can attend in full.

Which government and company internships for women in tech and science exist?

Two kinds exist: a government programme for women with a science postgraduate degree, and company programmes for women engineering undergraduates. WISE-IPR is the one programme the Department of Science and Technology (DST) files under "Internship for alternative career path in STEM" on its Women in Science and Engineering-KIRAN (WISE-KIRAN) page. It gives "one-year training to women in the area of Intellectual Property Rights", for women aged 25 to 45 with a postgraduate degree, PhD or equivalent in basic and applied sciences. The call for applications runs April to May.

So WISE-IPR is not for an undergraduate in B.Tech or B.Sc. It suits a woman with an M.Sc. or another science postgraduate degree who wants to move into patents and IP work, and details for each cycle sit with TIFAC, which the DST page links.

The same division's fellowships support women who want to pursue a PhD (WISE-PhD) or continue research after one (WISE-PDF), and its overseas WINGS programme lists an internship module for Indian women scientists at international labs and academic institutions. The page shows the last WISE-PhD call closed on 31 December 2024 and the last WISE-PDF call on 28 February 2025, each with "Next call shall be announced soon."

An undergraduate looking for an internship for women in tech turns to companies' own programmes. Cisco's careers page, for one, describes the Cisco Women Internship Program (CWIP) as a two-month internship for women engineering students in their 4th semester, from any branch, with no active backlogs and no CGPA cut-off.

The same page says registration comes through your college's placement team in January, with an online assessment and interviews in February and offer letters in March. The internship runs from May to June and is completely in person, at the Bangalore campus. Check any other company's programme on its own careers page; beyond those, the PM Internship Scheme and platform listings, read one by one, stay open.

What can you apply to after a career break?

For an internship for career break women, two programmes are built for women returning after a break, and both ask for a track record: Tata Consultancy Services' Rebegin, which needs two years of continuous work experience, and DST's WISE-SCOPE, for women scientists aged 27 to 60. On its Rebegin careers page, TCS says "Applicants must have 2 years of continuous work experience to be eligible for the program."

Applicants can have several career breaks, but "it is mandatory to highlight the duration of the career breaks and reasons while applying." The page says the initiative is meant for women whose break was for family or other commitments, and that a break explained only by missing experience letters would not be considered.

The same page says the open positions under Rebegin "are applicable to women candidates only", and that the programme covers India-wide jobs at TCS. On part-time work, it points readers to each job posting. It calls Rebegin "an ongoing effort" whose applicability "is against open job opportunities". You apply against a posted job through the Rebegin section of the TCS careers portal, or by email to [email protected] with Rebegin in the subject line.

For scientists, DST's WISE-SCOPE "is designed to support women scientists aged 27 to 60 Years in re-entering the mainstream scientific workforce" through translational research in five applied areas, from energy and water to engineering. Its last call closed on 28 February 2025, and the page says the next "shall be announced soon".

Neither returner programme is described as remote on its own page, so an online internship for career break women has to come from the open routes in the next section.

If your career gap came after a degree, or after a first job you left early, and you have neither two years' experience nor a science doctorate, look at routes built for students: the MWCD internship goes up to age 40 if you are associated with an institution and do not belong to a tier-I city. Which general routes stay open, online or not?

Routes that set no condition on gender differ mainly in mode. The PM Internship Scheme places interns on-site in companies. Online volunteering on the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) platform is fully remote. The National Commission for Women offers a 30-day virtual internship to certain law and social science students, and listing platforms carry work-from-home internships.

The PM Internship Scheme's FAQ page dates from the pilot. It sets the age limits at 21 and 24 and excludes anyone in full-time work or full-time education, then makes an exception for students in online or distance learning, who are eligible. That clause helps a woman studying through distance education. The FAQ gives the internship as 12 months, with at least six spent in a real workplace.

The PIB release dated 22 April 2026 puts the applicant age band at 18 to 25, admits final-year UG and PG students with an NOC from their institution, and sets monthly assistance at ₹9,000 or more. That same FAQ quotes the pilot's ₹5,000 a month; a returner planning around the money should take the figure shown on pminternship.mca.gov.in when registering. For fully remote work, the UN Volunteers platform's rules for online assignments say collaboration "must take place online" and that online volunteers must never be asked to make donations or solicit them from others. Those are UNV's rules for its own platform.

The National Commission for Women's internship instructions, in an order dated 4 August 2026, list Scheme C, "Virtual Internship", with a stipend of "Rs.2000/-for a period of 30 days", for students who meet the Scheme A or B criteria: particular years of law degrees, or postgraduates in social work, sociology, women's or gender studies and related subjects, with at least 60% marks from Class XII onwards.

The instructions set no condition on gender, and Scheme C is the only one of the three marked virtual. See also the round-up of government internship portals outside AICTE.

How does applying directly to a non-profit's own programme compare?

Entry rules at a non-profit's own programme are its own, so read them on its page, and its work may not build skills from your subject. UGC's 2023 internship guidelines for undergraduates count NGOs among host organisations, next to government and private bodies, universities, research labs and local industry, and one stated objective is "combining physical and digital modes of learning".

On subject depth this route can lose: if the work is outreach, reports and campaigns, a science or engineering student cannot count on lab or coding practice unless the role says so. Ask what the work is, and whether your department will count it.

Check the organisation before you apply. NGO Darpan, the NITI Aayog portal, issues a Darpan ID against an affidavit the organisation files about itself, and no physical certificate, so an ID shows registration on the organisation's own word. The portal also keeps a list of blacklisted NPOs. If any programme asks you to pay to join, stop there.

Which route fits your situation this month?

Your age, home city, degree and work history pick the route. Women aged 21 to 40 from outside the tier-I cities fit MWCD; final-year students aged 18 to 25 fit the PM Internship Scheme; science postgraduates aged 25 to 45 fit WISE-IPR; two years of work fits TCS Rebegin. Students who can only work online start with listings and volunteering.

• Between 21 and 40, from a city off the tier-I list, linked to a college or institution, and free for two months in Delhi: the MWCD internship, with the next window, on the published pattern, from 1 to 10 December 2026.
• In the final year, between 18 and 25, and able to work on-site at a company: the PM Internship Scheme, with an NOC from the college. Check the current duration on its portal; the FAQ still lists the pilot's 12 months.
• A science postgraduate aged 25 to 45 who wants to work in patents: WISE-IPR, in the April to May call.
• A woman engineering student in her 4th semester: a company's women-only programme such as CWIP, through the placement team in January.
• Two or more years of continuous work before a break: TCS Rebegin postings, and other companies' own careers pages.
• A student with no experience who can only work online: work-from-home listings read one by one, online volunteering, or a non-profit's own online programme. If it has to fit around classes, see the guide to a part-time internship alongside college.
