Part-time internship for students: a week-by-week plan alongside classes

How many hours a week does a part-time internship take alongside classes?

Four to eight hours a week covers the 2 to 4 credits a university can assign to an internship. The University Grants Commission's 2023 internship guidelines for undergraduates count each internship credit as a two-hour engagement every week, which comes to 30 hours in a semester of 15 weeks. A two-credit internship is therefore four hours a week, and a four-credit one is eight.

Every UG degree student also owes a compulsory internship under the same guidelines: 60 to 120 hours, after semester four. Spread over a 15-week semester, 60 hours is four hours a week and 120 hours is eight. The UGC's Curriculum and Credit Framework, though, places its 2 to 4 credit summer internship "during the summer term", so doing it in term time needs your university's approval. Those are credit conversions, not a weekly limit; the number you work to is the one you agree with the organisation in writing. Technical courses count differently: the AICTE Internship Policy values a single credit at 40 to 45 hours or more, which is roughly one full-time week.

AICTE also names the two formats outright. Its policy describes internships as full-time during the summer vacation and part-time while the academic session runs. At eight hours a week, one AICTE credit takes five to six weeks of term.

Will your college count a part-time internship for credit?

It depends on your university, because each one writes its own rule. Karnatak University, Dharwad lists "weekly 4 hrs in the academic session for 13-14 weeks" among its internship options. The Indian Institute of Science's placement office tells its own UG and Masters students that internships are "permitted only during the summer term".

Karnatak University's guideline, written for the NEP courses it began in 2021-22, treats one credit as 30 hours on field experience and puts a two-credit internship at 45 to 60 hours. Four hours a week for 13 to 14 weeks gives 52 to 56 hours, inside that band. It also leaves the choice of full-time or part-time to each college, decided "programme wise and not subject wise".

The IISc rule is narrower still: internships for its UG and Masters students are allowed only between 1 May and 31 July, for at most 12 weeks. If your university counts only vacation work, plan around the break instead, as in the guide to vacation internships in the early years of college.

Weeks 1 to 2: what do you settle with your college before applying?

Settle four things with your department in the first fortnight: whether term-time hours count, how many credits and hours are needed, who your internship supervisor is, and what document the college wants at the end. Ask before you apply, because a college can decline credit for work it did not approve in advance. 1. Ask which format your programme allows. At Karnatak University that choice sits with the college, programme by programme.
2. Ask for the hours as a number. The Bangalore University B.Com guideline, for example, sets "a minimum of 4-6 weeks (min 90 hours)".
3. Ask who supervises. The UGC guidelines attach each intern to an internship supervisor and a mentor "preferably from the same HEI".
4. Ask for the format of the final certificate and report, so you can show it to the organisation on day one.

Then put the weekly hours in writing with the organisation. A short email that names the days, the hours and who you report to is enough; the guide on agreeing your hours before you start has the wording to use.

Weeks 3 to 4: where are part-time and work from home internships listed?

Internshala and the AICTE National Internship Portal both list them. Internshala's part-time filter reported 1,550 part-time internships on 25 September 2026, and AICTE's portal has a "Remote & Hybrid" section that it pitches at students working from a hostel room.

On Internshala's part-time page that day, 30 of the 50 first-page listings were work from home and 22 read "Unpaid", all of them remote. Of the other 28, 24 gave a monthly amount, two a lump sum, one a weekly figure and one "Performance Based". Check whether a number is per week, per month or for the whole stint before comparing it with another.

None of the 50 cards stated hours a week, only a duration, so the "Part time" tag says nothing about the load. Ask for the weekly hours before you accept, and treat any remote offer the way the guide to work from home internships suggests checking it.

For remote part time internships, filter on both tags at once. Internshala's combined page of part time, work from home internships for students reported 961 on 25 September 2026.

Neither board charges you to apply. Internshala's page calls itself a free platform where students pay nothing to apply. The AICTE portal says a student pays ₹0 at every stage, from registration through to its completion certificate.

A listing on a government site is not automatically free. The Skill India Digital Hub internships page has a filter headed "Internship Fee" with two options, Free and Paid, and tags each card one or the other. On that page, Paid describes a fee, so read the tag before you apply.

Final-year students have one more government route. Since the Press Information Bureau announcement dated 22 April 2026 (release 2254498), students in the last year of a degree or a master's, aged 18 to 25, may apply to the PM Internship Scheme. The college must first issue a No Objection Certificate confirming the internship will not get in the way of academic requirements, signed by someone such as your HoD, dean, principal or placement officer. The scheme's FAQ describes a 12-month internship, so ask the host how its hours sit with your classes.

Which route fits a student with classes? Four routes judged on the same criteria

A faculty project in your own college or a subject posting on the AICTE National Internship Portal suits a course that needs lab or coding practice. For a remote role with regular feedback, compare listing platforms and non-profit programmes on the weekly hours they will put in writing.

Judge each route on five things: whether the weekly hours are in writing, what it costs you, who reviews your work, what record your college receives, and whether it teaches technical skills from your subject.

• A listing tagged part time on a platform such as Internshala. Hours are not on the card, so you must get them in writing yourself. Applying is free, by the platform's own page. The employer reviews the work, and the record is whatever the employer chooses to issue, so match it to your college's format early. Subject skills depend entirely on the role.
• The AICTE National Internship Portal. It is free end to end by its own page, it has a remote and hybrid section, and it links a tool to verify a certificate, which helps the record your college gets. Hours and review depend on each posting, so ask both questions of the host. Subject skills depend on the posting you choose.
• A project with a faculty member or a lab in your own college. The UGC guidelines say research internship experience "can be gained by working with faculty/scientists/mentors" in higher education institutions, and they ask a mentor to check performance fortnightly. Your department already holds the record, no outside application is involved, and you can ask for a project inside your own subject.
• Applying straight to a non-profit's programme. Pledge A Smile Foundation (the publisher of this guide) runs an online internship that is open to students of any stream and free to apply to and to do. Interns own a weekly target, send a weekly report and get feedback on it. There is a performance-based stipend and a certificate on completion. It does not teach subject-specific technical skills.

Weeks 5 to 14: how do you keep the hours steady through tests and exams?

Agree in advance how exam weeks are handled, and give notice before you drop hours. The UGC guidelines ask students to inform the internship supervisor "at least one day prior to availing leave" except in an emergency. For technical courses, AICTE's policy wants the notice sent by email and permits a day's leave per four weeks of internship, or two days per six, not counting holidays and weekly offs.

Plan backwards from the university calendar. Karnatak University assesses internship reports during the practical examinations, before theory examinations begin, and completes that assessment within 10 days. Under the Bangalore University B.Com guideline, a university team checks internship marks before they go up on the university portal, 10 to 15 days before theory examinations begin. Keep a record every week you work. The AICTE policy asks for a daily diary signed by the supervisor after every day; a part-time intern can keep the same thing weekly, with the date, the hours and the task. If a test week costs you four hours, make them up in the next fortnight and note it in the log. The same point in the UGC guidelines adds that, if the need arises, students may extend an internship into the summer and winter breaks.

Last weeks: what do you collect so the hours count?

Collect a certificate from the organisation, any rating form your college uses, your weekly log and your report. The Bangalore University B.Com guideline asks for a company certificate that states the internship period and briefly describes the nature of the internship, plus a confidential rating from the company worth 10 of the 100 marks. Its report's learning-outcomes chapter includes a "Weekly report of work done", which a weekly log already gives you.

Karnatak University attaches a completion certificate format to its guideline, to be given on the organisation's letterhead, with the areas worked in and a rating out of 10 for the report. It bases assessment on the activity logbook, the supervisor's report, attendance and a viva, and wants a handwritten report of 40 to 50 pages.

Ask for these documents two weeks before your last day, not on it. A certificate that states a period without the hours may not satisfy a department that counts hours, so ask the organisation to write the total hours in, matching your log.

Are there part-time internships in Bangalore, and what do Bangalore University colleges ask for?

Yes. For a part time internship in Bangalore, Internshala's part-time page for the city reported 1,048 part-time internships on 25 September 2026; 44 of the 50 on its first page named a monthly amount and none read "Unpaid". Bangalore University's sixth-semester B.Com guideline asks for a minimum of 90 hours, in commerce or management only, and colleges mark the report, a viva and the company's rating out of 100.

Bangalore University publishes course-wise internship guidelines for UG programmes on its guidelines page, including B.Com, BBA, B.Sc and several BA subjects. Read the one for your own course. The B.Com PDF carries no date, though it cites the UGC's 2023 guidelines, so ask your department which version it follows this year.

The B.Com guideline lists NGOs, banks, government departments and firms of every size as acceptable hosts, and allows the internship to be done in India or overseas.

Its minimum of 90 hours is 15 hours a week over six weeks, or 22.5 over four. At four hours a week, 90 hours would take more than 22 weeks, longer than a semester, so ask the department whether term-time hours can add up to the total.
