NGO internship in Bangalore: local routes and online ones

What should you compare before choosing an NGO internship in Bangalore?

Two of the city's universities put their internship rules in writing: Bengaluru City University's MSW syllabus asks for 15 hours of field work a week, and Bangalore University's sixth-semester B.Com guideline asks for at least 90 hours and names NGOs among allowed hosts. Weigh any offer against those rules on six points: fee, credit, supervisor, subject skills, travel and a host you can verify.

• Fee: nobody should charge you to apply or to take part.
• Credit: whether your department counts the hours, which at BCU and Bangalore University is written into guidelines you can read.
• Supervisor: a named person at the host who reads your work and signs whatever your college asks for.
• Subject skills: whether the tasks belong to your own discipline.
• Travel: where the desk is and how many days a week you must be at it.
• A verifiable host: a registration you can look up yourself.

Travel needs reading card by card. Of the 17 listings Internshala placed in Bangalore on 25 September 2026, seven also named other cities, from Mysuru, Tumkur and Hubballi to Jaipur and Surat, and seven carried a "(Hybrid)" tag without saying how many days a week are at a desk. A card can say Bangalore and still mean a field role across several Karnataka towns.

Does your Bengaluru college place you with an NGO itself?

For MSW students at Bengaluru City University (BCU), yes: the department or college allots the agency. BCU's MSW syllabus, "With effect from the academic year 2025-26" and binding on every BCU department and affiliated college that runs the MSW, sets fieldwork two days a week "in agencies allotted by the department/college".

In the first two semesters BCU's agencies include non-governmental organisations, government departments and panchayat institutions. Where BCU students sit among other social work programmes is set out in the social work internship guide.

The load is fixed at a minimum of 15 hours of fieldwork each week, and field attendance must reach 75%. A student who falls short in any semester repeats the practicum after completing the course. The fourth semester adds at least 30 working days of block placement, and that block placement "shall be based on the student's choice".

Allotment does not do all the work for you. The syllabus says faculty help students get the agency's permission for field work, but it puts part of that job on the student too. It also bars first and second semester placements in industries and in the medical and psychiatric departments of hospitals.

Bangalore University is a separate university, and it publishes internship guidelines course by course. Its sixth-semester BA Sociology guidelines, accepted by the Board of Studies in March 2024, ask the college to match students with organisations, "ensuring a mix of rural and urban placements", and to give each student an internship request letter on college letterhead signed by the head of the institution.

Its sixth-semester B.Com guideline leaves the search to a wider field. It sets a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks and 90 hours, worth three credits, restricts the work to commerce and management, and lists NGOs among allowed hosts beside businesses, banks, cooperatives and government departments. BCU BBA students work to a different rule. The BBA (Regular) syllabus, revised under a Karnataka Government Order of 8 May 2024 for students admitted from 2024-25, sets a sixth-semester internship of 90 hours or more, done "after the class hours", in "any Tiny, Small, Medium or Large organization", watched by a mentor from the commerce and management faculty.

The BBA syllabus does not mention NGOs, so ask your mentor before you count one. Whatever the host, the report runs to about 50 to 60 pages and must carry the internship certificate and the organisation's log sheet. Marks split 60 for the report, 20 for a viva and 20 for keeping the log book, awarded by the mentor.

Where do law students in Bangalore do NGO internships?

BA LLB and LLB (Hons.) students at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) intern for 20 working days each February to March, and NLSIU's LLB (Hons.) programme page lists non-governmental organisations and legal aid centres among allowed hosts. At other Bangalore law colleges, ask how your college applies the Bar Council of India's internship rules.

NLSIU's recruitment and internships page says all BA LLB students, across the five years, "are required to undertake an internship of 20 working days in February-March every year", so a first-year fresher interns too, and the same rule covers LLB (Hons.) students across three years. These internships carry academic credits, and supervisors evaluate each student.

That recruitment page names no required host type for those law internships. It describes internships across its programmes as in-person, during the trimester breaks in February, June and October, "typically for a duration of one month". The grassroots placement belongs to another programme: the NLS BA (Hons.) first year does an "Immersive internship with grassroots organisations advancing social change".

NLSIU's 3-year LLB (Hons.) programme page is more specific. It says internships "may be undertaken in" lawyers' chambers, courts and prosecution departments, and also in "legal aid centres, legislative secretariat, think-tanks, research institutions, non-governmental organizations etc." For an NLSIU LLB student, then, an NGO sits on the university's own list of hosts.

Internship is compulsory for law students across India, at NLSIU and elsewhere. A footnote in the Supreme Court's judgment in Gaurav Kumar v. Union of India, delivered 30 July 2024, reads the Bar Council of India's 2008 legal education rules (Part IV, Rule 25) as requiring an internship "under an advocate" lasting at least 12 weeks on a three-year course and twenty weeks on a five-year one.

Are NGO internships in Bangalore paid?

Some are. On 25 September 2026, 11 of the 17 city listings on Internshala's NGO Internships in Bangalore page named a monthly amount, from ₹2,500 to ₹32,000 at the ends of their ranges; three read "Unpaid", two read "Not provided" and one read "Performance Based".

The heading said 290, but the city list ended at 17 with "That's all in Bangalore" and pointed to 273 remote opportunities. The monthly amounts ran from "₹ 2,500 - 6,000 /month" on a one-month field role spread across several cities to "₹ 17,000 - 32,000 /month" on a three-month field marketing role in Gandhinagar, Jaipur and Bangalore. Five of the eleven started at ₹15,000 or more. Listing counts move daily; read these as one day's snapshot.

Ten of the 17 named Bangalore alone. Six of those ten gave an amount, from ₹5,000 at the bottom of the lowest range to ₹20,000 a month at the top, and the other four were unpaid or gave no figure. The NGO tag is the board's category, not a registration, and one card came from a design studio that describes itself as working with non-profits.

A Bangalore student who wants a set monthly sum rather than a listing's range can look at the PM Internship Scheme, which the Ministry of Corporate Affairs runs to place interns in large companies. A 22 April 2026 release on PIB sets ₹9,000 a month as the floor, takes applicants between 18 and 25, and admits final-year UG and PG students once their college signs a No Objection Certificate.

The scheme's FAQ page carries older numbers from the pilot, a 12-month stint on ₹5,000 monthly for those aged 21 to 24, so take the terms pminternship.mca.gov.in displays at the time you register. The full list of conditions is in who the PM Internship Scheme is open to.

Can you do an NGO internship online while living in Bangalore?

Yes, though whether it counts depends on your course rules. Bangalore University's B.Com internship guideline says internships "can be pursued in any location", and its BA Sociology guideline allows a part-time internship of 90 hours over 8 to 12 weeks during the academic session. Neither mentions online work, so ask the department before you begin.

Two routes in the city are fixed in place. BCU's MSW fieldwork happens in agencies the department allots, and NLSIU describes its internships as in-person. An online internship done beside either is extra experience; ask your department before you treat it as a substitute.

The BA Sociology part-time option is the one that fits a term. Ninety hours across 8 to 12 weeks works out to between about 7.5 and 11.25 hours a week, which a remote role can meet in evenings and weekends if the host agrees to that pattern in writing.

The larger pool is remote. The same Internshala page that listed 17 city cards on 25 September 2026 pointed to 273 remote opportunities beyond them, the work from home NGO listings a Bangalore student can apply to without the commute. BCU's BBA internship, set "after the class hours", is the kind of requirement such a role can meet if your mentor accepts it.

How do you check a Karnataka NGO before you say yes?

Look the host up on NGO Darpan, NITI Aayog's portal for non-profits. Its NPO Directory filters by "NPO Registered State" and "NPO Registered District", so set Karnataka and then the district to see registered NGOs near you, and it keeps a separate Blacklisted NPOs list. Its home page adds that a Darpan ID is all NITI Aayog hands out, with no paper certificate, that the ID is based on a self-declared affidavit from the organisation, and that it confers no endorsement or recognition by NITI Aayog.

On 25 September 2026 the home page, set to all states, counted 85 blacklisted Darpan IDs and split registered non-profits into trusts (49.82%), societies (41.00%) and Section 8 companies (9.18%). A figure for Karnataka appears only when you choose the state yourself.

The names on the city's listings do not tell you the legal form. On that day six of the 17 Bangalore cards came from organisations whose names end in Foundation and two in Trust. A word in a name is not a registration, so ask the host which of Darpan's three types it is and for its Darpan ID.

A Bangalore University B.Com student has one more test: whether the host will sign. The sixth-semester guideline wants the host's certificate giving the dates of the internship and what the student did, plus a confidential rating on points such as regularity and attitude to work, worth 10 of the 100 marks. Ask before you accept whether the host will fill in that rating.

Which Bangalore route fits your course?

Your course decides it. BCU MSW students start with the agency the department allots, NLSIU law students with 20 working days each February to March, Bangalore University B.Com and BA Sociology students with a sixth-semester internship of at least 90 hours, and everyone else weighs a listing board against remote work for a non-profit, each judged on fee, credit, supervisor, subject skills, travel and a verifiable host.

• Department fieldwork (BCU MSW). It counts because the syllabus sets it: 15 hours a week and 75% attendance. Faculty supervisors visit the agency regularly, and a viva with two examiners feeds the marks. It teaches social work practice directly, and the host is one the department chose. Travel is two days a week to that agency. It loses on reach, since only the department's own students take part.
• NLSIU's compulsory internship. It carries academic credit and a supervisor evaluates each student. It runs in person in that February to March window, and NLSIU's LLB (Hons.) page lists NGOs and legal aid centres among allowed hosts, so subject fit depends on the host you pick. Verification of that host is yours. It loses on reach and timing: NLSIU students only, in one window a year.
• A listing on Internshala. Pay varies by card, from unpaid to five figures a month on the 25 September 2026 page. Your college must accept the host before the hours count, supervision is whatever the host offers, and subject fit and travel vary card by card. It loses on verification, which falls to you alone.
• Going straight to a non-profit's own online scheme. Pledge A Smile Foundation (the publisher of this guide) runs an online internship that is open to students of any stream and free to apply to and to do. Interns own a weekly target, send a weekly report and get feedback on it. There is a performance-based stipend and a certificate on completion. It does not teach subject-specific technical skills.
