What should you weigh before choosing an NGO internship in Mumbai?

On 25 September 2026, Internshala's Mumbai NGO page carried the heading "288 Intern Jobs in Sep 2026", yet only 15 listings appeared under Mumbai before the page said "That's all in Mumbai" and pointed to 273 remote opportunities. A headline count says little about a route. Weigh every route, local or online, on the same six points:

• whether anyone asks you for a fee to apply or to take part;
• whether your department will count it toward your degree;
• who supervises the work and signs it off;
• whether it teaches the technical skills of your own subject;
• how long you spend travelling to it, from Thane, Navi Mumbai or the western suburbs;
• how you confirm the host is registered and is what it says it is.

Does your Mumbai college place you with an NGO through fieldwork?

Yes, if you study social work at TISS (the Tata Institute of Social Sciences) or the College of Social Work, Nirmala Niketan: fieldwork with an agency is part of the degree. The TISS School of Social Work says on its fieldwork page that fieldwork makes up "around 28%" of the overall curriculum of its Mumbai master's programme.

First-year fieldwork at TISS is worth 12 credits and runs alongside classes: fifteen hours over two specified days each week, at the organisation where the student is placed. The page says placements span "a diverse range of organizations and settings" anchored by the school's eight centres, and a full-time team of a fieldwork coordinator and two supervisors runs the first year.

The second year is programme-specific and carries another 12 credits across two semesters. Its details sit on each centre's own pages, so check your centre before you plan anything else around those days.

Nirmala Niketan's MSW programme page describes field work as practising social work "under the guidance of trained field instructors in selected social welfare agencies and organizations", and says students must keep regular recordings of it. Its assessments follow patterns "developed under academic autonomy and prescribed by the Mumbai University and UGC". Outside social work, credit for an NGO internship in Mumbai for students of other courses is your own department's decision, so ask before you start.

Where can law students in Mumbai do NGO and legal aid work?

Two routes are published for an NGO internship for law students in Mumbai: an NGO host that your university accepts under the Bar Council of India's rules, and your college's legal aid committee. Rule 25 of the Bar Council of India Rules of Legal Education names "NGO" first in its list of internship hosts, beside advocates, the judiciary, law firms and companies.

The same rule adds two limits. In the text of the rule as reproduced in a law college's internship notice, no internship in a single year may run continuously beyond four weeks, and every student must go at least once through trial and appellate advocates. The college route is closer to home. The legal aid committee page of KC Law College says its student committee works "in conjunction with Mumbai District Legal Services Authorities". It runs legal literacy programmes across Mumbai and its suburbs, mostly in schools, colleges, orphanages, prisons, a juvenile home and old age homes.

The same committee runs a legal aid clinic that is "open on every working Saturday", giving free counselling to citizens, and one of its stated aims is to involve students in assisting court staff at Lok Adalats. If your college has a committee like this, it may offer legal aid work without a separate application window; ask the faculty-in-charge.

The Maharashtra State Legal Services Authority is the statewide authority, set up under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987. Its home page menu, read on 25 September 2026, listed schemes, panel lawyers and a "List of PLV", and no student internship notice. Can you apply directly to an NGO with a Mumbai office?

Yes, and the organisation's own internship page sets the terms. Plan India's page names Mumbai first among its internship cities and takes "any student who has a requirement of internship in the course curriculum", with a letter from college, for "ideally minimum of 15 days and maximum of 6 months or as per project /programme need".

Goonj's internship page lists Mumbai among the eight offices where it offers internships, and spells out more. Its Social Internship is for undergraduate and postgraduate students, lasts at least one month, runs full time from Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm, and is unpaid. It says it is unable to provide accommodation, and that work from home "is not encouraged".

Greenpeace India's internship page names Mumbai among four offices and sets a lead time. The completed application form "must reach us at least two months in advance" of the start date, the commitment is "minimum 45 days and maximum 3 months", and applicants must be in their second year of study or higher, with a verification letter from their departmental head stating that the course requires the internship, and must be Indian citizens.

Terms like these decide the Mumbai fit. Goonj's six-day office week cannot run beside TISS's two fixed fieldwork days during term, so a social work student would need a vacation for it. What do Mumbai NGO listings on job sites pay?

Paid NGO internships in Mumbai were the smaller share: of the 15 Mumbai listings on Internshala's NGO page on 25 September 2026, 8 read "Unpaid" and 7 named a monthly amount, from "₹ 2,500 - 6,000 /month" at the lowest to "₹ 30,000 /month" at the highest. The top figure was for an eldercare operations role in Thane at a firm that calls itself an early stage startup. Listing boards change daily; this is one dated snapshot.

Take each amount exactly as its card states it, per month for a set period, and those periods ran from one month to six. Averaging seven ranges into one Mumbai stipend would mislead; the sample is small, and one high figure would pull it up.

The NGO tag is a category, not a legal form. One of the 15 cards came from a firm whose name ends in "Private Limited", and several were community, teaching and social media roles. Five cards named other cities as well as Mumbai, such as Delhi, Kota or Ahmedabad.

Travel time decides whether a small stipend is worth it. Two of the 15 cards named only Navi Mumbai or Thane as the place of work. Before you apply, check which station or suburb the office is in and how many days a week you are expected there.

Can you work online for a non-profit while living in Mumbai?

Yes, and a remote or work from home role is where the listing board itself sends readers once its 15 Mumbai cards run out. Online work removes the commute, and it can sit around fixed local commitments such as TISS's two fieldwork days or a legal aid clinic's Saturdays.

A remote role does not replace fieldwork. TISS places its students with organisations as part of the degree, so remote work you find on your own falls outside the fieldwork unless the school agrees. For law students, Rule 25's list of hosts decides what counts, whatever the format.

Check what "Hybrid" means before you treat a role as online. On the Mumbai page, 5 of the 15 local cards carried that tag. Find out how many office days the host expects each week, and where, before you say yes.

How do you check a Mumbai NGO before you say yes?

Look it up with the Office of the Charity Commissioner, Maharashtra, whose website lists the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and the Maharashtra Public Trust Act, 1950 under its Acts and Rules. Its Know Your Trust search takes a PTR office, a trust type, and a trust number or name.

1. Ask the host for its registration number. A notice on the Commissioner's home page cites one in the form "PTR No. F-68371/Mumbai".
2. In Know Your Trust, pick the office. "Greater Mumbai Region" is one option; Thane, Palghar and Raigad have their own.
3. Enter the trust type (the search offers A to F) and the number, or search by name.
4. Read the result: registration date, address, and links to the trust's documents and accounts.
5. Search the same name on NGO Darpan, the NITI Aayog portal, and check its list of blacklisted organisations.

Know Your Trust holds only the Charity Commissioner of Maharashtra's records. If an organisation with a Mumbai office tells you it is registered in another state, ask for that number and look it up with that state's registrar.

A Darpan ID rests on the organisation's own declaration, so treat it as a second check after the trust record. The portal's home page, last updated on 15 April 2026, counted 618,615 Darpan IDs across India, of which 85 were blacklisted. The Maharashtra figure needs the state filter in a browser, so run it yourself if you want a local count.

A host that is a Section 8 company is registered under the Companies Act, 2013, which the Ministry of Corporate Affairs administers. Search its name in the ministry's Master Data Services, which returns the company's name, CIN, state and status. The checks for every legal form are in the full verification checklist.

Which Mumbai route fits your course?

Social work students start with their department, law students with Rule 25 and the college legal aid committee, and everyone else chooses between local listings, an NGO's own office internship and an online programme. Each entry is judged on the six points: fee, credit, supervision, subject skills, travel and verification.

• Your department's fieldwork, at TISS or Nirmala Niketan. It is part of the degree, so credit is certain, and trained supervisors or field instructors oversee it. The work is social work practice itself, and the college selects the agency. Its weakness is access: only that department's own students are placed.
• Legal aid and NGO work for law students. A college committee's clinic charges citizens nothing, runs on working Saturdays and works under a faculty-in-charge. An NGO host counts under Rule 25 if your university accepts it. It teaches legal work. It loses on length, since no stint in a single year can run past four continuous weeks.
• A listing on a job site. Some pay, though 8 of the 15 local cards on 25 September 2026 did not, and the tag covers firms as well as trusts. For credit, the college must accept the host, and only the host supervises. Subject fit varies card by card. It loses on verification and travel, both left to you, with some roles in Thane or Navi Mumbai.
• An NGO's own internship at its Mumbai office. The pages quoted above ask for a college letter or a degree course, and one has interns work in close co-ordination with its own team. Credit depends on your department accepting the host, and verification is a Know Your Trust or Master Data search. Subject fit depends on the team. It loses on time: one asks for six full days a week for at least a month, unpaid.
• A non-profit's own online programme. Pledge A Smile Foundation (the publisher of this guide) runs an online internship that is open to students of any stream and free to apply to and to do. Interns own a weekly target, send a weekly report and get feedback on it. There is a performance-based stipend and a certificate on completion. It does not teach subject-specific technical skills.
