Work from home internship for students: the checks to run before you accept

What is a work from home internship, exactly?

Internshala's help centre defines a work from home internship as work for a fixed duration of 1 week to 6 months, done from home, for a stipend. The employer sends tasks by email or a messaging app with a submission date, and you choose your hours unless the employer fixes them.

That definition covers tasks and deadlines. It says nothing about who teaches you or who reads what you send, and those parts change from one listing to the next. The six checks that follow are about exactly those parts, and they apply to any internship for students work from home, paid or unpaid.

Listings use several labels for this; the five words listings use for the same arrangement are sorted out separately. The supply is large. On 25 September 2026 the heading of Internshala's work from home board read "2330 Work From Home Internships".

Check 1: Is anyone asking you to pay anything?

If anyone asks you for money, stop there. Internshala's terms bar employers on it from charging applicants "money in any form (including test fee, security deposit, documentation fee, etc.)", and its safety page says a genuine employer does not ask anyone to pay in order to be hired. Those terms bind only Internshala's own listings.

The charge rarely arrives called a fee. It can be a registration charge, a refundable deposit, a paid training week before the work starts, or a price on the certificate. The safety page names application fees, security deposits and training charges, and tells students to stop communicating and report the employer.

The government portal takes the same line. AICTE's National Internship Portal puts the student's cost at ₹0 for signing up, applying, being shortlisted and getting the completion certificate, and says any website, agent or "placement consultant" asking you to pay to apply through it is running a scam. Home-based work draws a particular kind of fraud. The Ministry of Home Affairs year-end review for 2023, released through PIB on 3 January 2024, names "Part Time Job Fraud/Ponzi scheme" among the major cybercrime methods reported in India that year. An offer that pays small sums for simple online tasks and then wants a deposit fails this check the moment money is asked for.

Before you pay or share anything, search the recruiter's number, email address or website on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in). Its "Check Suspect" menu takes a mobile number or email, and a separate search takes a website or app. A clean result proves nothing, but a match is reason enough to stop.

Check 2: Is the stipend written down, and is "unpaid" allowed here?

Get the stipend in writing before day one, either as a monthly figure or as the word "unpaid". Internshala's terms put the stipend floor for home-based listings there at Rs. 1000/Month (the office-based floor is Rs. 2000/Month), and do not allow unpaid internships except from NGOs/NPOs, government agencies and legal profiles.

Those are the platform's rules for employers who post on it. An employer who reaches you through another board, a social media post or a direct email is not bound by them, so the written offer is the only place the figure is fixed.

The board's first page on 25 September 2026 carried 50 listings: 12 marked "Unpaid" and 38 with a stipend. Of those 38, 36 paid monthly, from ₹1,000 to 1,100 /month at the bottom to ₹25,000 to 40,000 /month at the top; one paid ₹1,000 to 1,500 /week and one a ₹1,500 to 15,000 lump sum. If the stipend is linked to performance, ask what is measured and when the money is paid, and have the answer in an email. Internshala's help centre asks for the offer letter and your conversation with the employer when a student reports that the stipend in the offer does not match the one on the listing.

Check 3: Does the offer match the listing you applied to?

Put the offer next to the listing and compare the role, the tasks, the hours, the duration and the stipend. Internshala's safety page says that if the role you are offered "is significantly different from the one you applied for, treat it as a warning sign", and to verify the opportunity before going further if responsibilities, stipend or role have changed.

The platform treats a mismatch as a reason to stop an employer posting again. Its safety page lists "offering a lower stipend than advertised" as its example of a mismatch between what was advertised and what was offered.

Save each listing as a screenshot or a PDF on the day you apply, because an employer can edit a listing or take it down. Then the comparison is between two documents you hold, and a complaint has something to attach. Check 4: Who will set your work and review it each week?

Before you accept, ask for the name of the person who will send your tasks and read what you submit, and how often you will hear back. Internshala's definition promises only tasks sent by email or message with a submission date. The UGC's 2023 internship guidelines expect a mentor chosen by the college or the student to check and validate the student's performance fortnightly, so ask whether anyone at the employer will do the same.

The UGC's 2023 undergraduate internship guidelines give a yardstick. There, a mentor guides the student "digitally or physically" and checks and validates each student's performance fortnightly. The UGC wrote this for internships run through colleges, and an employer is not bound by it, but it tells you what supervision looks like on paper.

Take a data analyst internship work from home listing on the same board, checked on 25 September 2026. The tasks included data analysis for "actionable insights", building and maintaining data visualisations, and helping with data cleaning, validation and organisation. The skills named included Python, SQL, MS-Excel and Power BI. It was unpaid and ran for 1 month.

Every one of those tasks produces a file somebody can open and judge. Ask who opens it, and whether you get comments on your first chart before you are asked for the fifth. If nobody can be named, the listing is offering tasks without a supervisor.

Check 5: What are they asking for before you are selected?

Until you are selected, limit what you hand over to your CV, a work sample and your contact details. Internshala's safety page tells applicants to be wary when asked, early on, for an Aadhaar or PAN number, bank details, an OTP or a password, and says to share personal documents only when they are genuinely required after you have been selected.

Watch the size of the test as well. The same page separates ordinary assessments from "lengthy projects that resemble actual work", and suggests asking how your submission will be evaluated. If a test would take days and produces something the employer could publish as it stands, ask that question in writing before you start.

A bank account number belongs in the paperwork after an offer, when a stipend has to be paid into it.

Check 6: Will your college count a work from home internship?

It can, and your department makes the call. Table 2 of the AICTE Internship Policy, its credit framework, names "Online Internship" in the same internship entry as industry, government, NGO, PSU and MSME placements, with a report as the evidence and a faculty mentor, TPO or industry supervisor evaluating it.

The UGC's 2023 guidelines add that where a student cannot land an in-person placement, the host institute should offer "a provision for digital or group internship". They also have the student "obtain due permission from the parent institution" on receiving an offer. The document is framed around research internships and uses "should", so the credit rule is still your college's.

Can you do a work from home internship alongside classes?

Yes, and AICTE plans for it. The AICTE Internship Policy says internships "may be full-time or part-time", with the full-time kind meant for the summer break and the part-time kind for the academic session.

The two regulators count hours differently. AICTE treats 1 credit as at least 40 to 45 hours of work and puts a full-time intern at 40 to 45 hours weekly. The UGC's 2023 guidelines count one internship credit as a two-hour engagement per week, or 30 hours in a 15-week semester, and say an internship of 60 to 120 hours after the 4th semester "will be mandatory" for students in UG degree programmes.

Put a weekly figure on the offer before you accept. A WFH listing tagged "Part time", or a remote role where you choose your hours, still needs an hours figure in writing, so your final report matches what your college counts.

Is there a free government internship work from home?

Yes, on AICTE's National Internship Portal, which has a "Remote & Hybrid" filter it describes as "Work from your hostel room". Applying costs a student ₹0 at every stage, stipends are "declared upfront" and paid into a bank account, and it issues a QR-verifiable certificate plus credits in the Academic Bank of Credits.

What if the stipend never arrives, or you have already paid?

Write to the employer first, by email, and follow up by phone or message. Internshala's help centre says that if there is no response within 2 to 3 days, or the employer refuses the stipend or completion certificate, you can raise a query with it, attaching the offer letter and your email or text conversation with the employer.

The safety page, under non-payment or no certificate, says to always keep a copy of your offer letter and written communication, so there is a record of the agreed terms. Everything in the six checks above ends up in that record.

The complaint form on that help centre has ready-made categories that line up with the checks: asking for money, a security deposit or a fee; an unpaid internship offered; a stipend offered but not as advertised; a stipend not received after work; a different work profile offered; and promotional or sales work given as an assignment. If your problem fits one of them, pick it, because it tells the platform which rule was broken.

If you have already paid someone, the complaint is no longer only the platform's. The Ministry of Home Affairs runs the toll-free 1930 helpline for online financial fraud complaints, and the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal it set up on 30 August 2019 takes them online. The ministry's year-end review for 2023 said 1930 was receiving around 50,000 calls a day.

Call quickly. The reporting system behind the helpline exists to stop money moving from a victim's account to a fraudster's, and money seized that way is restored to the victim following due legal process.

Which route fits you? Four routes judged on the same criteria

Four routes lead to a work from home internship: an employer on a job platform, a government portal posting, a non-profit's own programme, and a course sold as an internship. The first three are free to apply to; the course charges a fee and pays no stipend.

• An employer found on a job platform. On Internshala, applying is free and charging applicants is barred by its terms. Pay there has a floor of Rs. 1000/Month for home-based roles, and only NGOs, government bodies and legal profiles may list unpaid ones. The employer sets the work and writes the certificate. It falls short on who checks the work, which varies by employer.
• A government portal posting. The AICTE portal costs ₹0 end to end, and each posting declares its own stipend. The host organisation sets and checks the work. The certificate is QR-verifiable and comes with credits in the Academic Bank of Credits. Technical skills depend on the posting, and so does the stipend.
• A non-profit's own programme. Pledge A Smile Foundation (the publisher of this guide) runs an online internship that is open to students of any stream and free to apply to and to do. Interns own a weekly target, send a weekly report and get feedback on it. There is a performance-based stipend and a certificate on completion. It does not teach subject-specific technical skills.
• A course sold as an internship. You pay a fee and no stipend comes back. Internshala's terms keep training programmes that ask for a security deposit or an admission fee off its internship listings. A syllabus sets the work and the certificate records a finished course. It can teach subject-specific technical skills. It falls short on cost, and on having nobody supervise real work.
