How to get an internship with no experience: the routes that do not ask for it

What should you compare when you have nothing on the experience line?

Under the 2023 internship guidelines for undergraduates of the University Grants Commission (UGC), a 60 to 120 hour internship after the fourth semester is compulsory for UG degree students ("will be mandatory", in their words), and nothing in them asks for a previous one.

Compare the routes on five criteria: whether the route asks for past experience at all, who is eligible (year of study, age, city), whether it pays, whether the work builds skills in your discipline, and how simply the host can be verified.

• Your own college. Under the UGC guidelines, colleges are expected to arrange internships and name a nodal officer. Being enrolled is the eligibility test, and prior experience is not part of it. Pay depends on the host the college finds. Subject fit is likely, since the guidelines have colleges identify projects based on the programmes they offer, and checking is easy because your own department stands behind the placement.
• The PM Internship Scheme. Its eligibility list covers age, citizenship, qualification and current education, and has no line about past internships. It is paid, and the portal is a government one, so it is easy to check. The catch is eligibility, since regular students qualify only in their final year and need an NOC from the institution.
• Listing boards such as Internshala. Each listing writes its own conditions, and the one examined further down asked for availability, a start date, a city and "relevant skills and interests". Pay varies by listing, some are unpaid, and subject fit depends on the role. Each host has to be checked separately, which puts the checking work on you.
• Writing to a non-profit yourself. Pledge A Smile Foundation (the publisher of this guide) runs an online internship that is open to students of any stream and free to apply to and to do. Interns own a weekly target, send a weekly report and get feedback on it. There is a performance-based stipend and a certificate on completion. It does not teach subject-specific technical skills.

Across the five criteria, no single route comes first. The college route is the easiest to check, the scheme publishes a monthly minimum, a listing board leaves every check to you, and the last entry loses on subject skills. Can your own college get you a first internship?

Yes. For an internship in college with no experience behind you, the UGC guidelines put the job on the college itself. They say higher education institutions "are required to play an important role in arranging internships for their students", and that "Each HEI should have a Nodal Officer" to develop internship verticals and sign memoranda of understanding with local businesses, research organisations and other institutions.

The same guidelines describe the machinery. A college is to identify projects linked to local industry needs and "create a pool available on the portal"; the student chooses a project and "must get a supervisor and mentor for it". Colleges are also asked to build digital portals listing experts, organisations, mentors and faculty that are "open and visible to students".

Faculty count as hosts too. The guidelines also treat research done under faculty, scientists or mentors, in colleges, universities and research institutions, as research internship experience. A teacher whose course you did well in is a first host who already knows your work.

Ask your department who the nodal officer is and whether a project list or portal exists. If nobody can name either, ask a teacher about a research project instead; that route needs no office behind it.

Does the PM Internship Scheme ask for experience?

No. The Ministry of Corporate Affairs' PM Internship Scheme FAQ lists four conditions: Indian citizenship, an age band, not holding a full-time job or studying full time (online and distance learners are eligible), and a completed qualification from SSC upwards. None of them concerns past internships. Shortlisting, the FAQ says, is "based on the candidates' preferences and the requirements posted by the companies".

Some past experience counts against you. The FAQ's ineligibility list includes anyone currently in a skill, apprenticeship, internship or training programme under a Central or State Government scheme, and anyone who has already completed an apprenticeship under NATS or NAPS. It also excludes graduates of IITs, IIMs and some other named institutions, and holders of a master's or professional degree such as an MBA or CA.

For students, the change that matters came on 22 April 2026. A Press Information Bureau release opens the scheme's pilot phase to undergraduates and postgraduates in their final year. "Final year students between 18-25 years of age can now apply", it says, with an NOC in which their institution confirms that the internship will not clash with academic requirements.

Under the April release, applicants can be 18 to 25 and interns receive at least ₹9,000 a month. On 25 September 2026 the FAQ still gave the pilot's original terms, an age band of 21 to 24 and monthly assistance of ₹5,000, so check the current terms on pminternship.mca.gov.in on the day you apply.

Which internships select on marks or an exam instead of experience?

Two national programmes select on marks or an exam result instead of past work: the Science Academies Summer Research Fellowship Program 2027 (SRFP), which asks students for a 65% average in core subjects, and the NPTEL internship, open only to NPTEL course toppers and learners who pass its certification exam in the Elite-Gold category.

The three national science academies, in Bengaluru, New Delhi and Prayagraj, run the SRFP jointly. It counts the 65% from Class X onwards, without languages, and asks for a 150 to 250 word write-up on what you would like to learn and achieve. Only set years of listed courses qualify, such as the second year of a BSc or the second and third years of a BTech or BCA.

A teacher who knows your work is asked for a recommendation letter. Selected students spend two months with an assigned guide, and the academies pay the train fare both ways plus a fellowship each month. Applications close on 30 November 2026.

NPTEL emails eligible learners once a course instructor agrees to take interns, by April for the summer round and by October for the winter one. You then apply online with your college's consent, and the instructor picks interns from your resume, grade cards for the last two semesters, a statement of purpose and your NPTEL certificate, with an interview if the instructor wants one.

Only in-person internships are open to students. The instructor sets the length, from 2 to 12 weeks, and the stipend is paid on successful completion: ₹15,000 for 4 weeks, on a scale from ₹7,500 (2 weeks) to ₹45,000 (12 weeks).

What do internship listings ask of a first-timer?

A listing sets its own conditions. A sales internship in Hyderabad on Internshala, checked on 25 September 2026, asked for no past internship; its five conditions under "Who can apply" were full-time in-office availability, a start between 26 August and 30 September, six months free, being "from Hyderabad only", and having "relevant skills and interests".

That one listing is an illustration, and other hosts write other conditions. Its numbers show where the competition was: 86 applicants for 2 openings, a stipend of ₹10,000 to 15,000 a month, and a list of five skills required, from Canva to sales support. The listing sets no other screen, so the conditions and the skills are what your application has to answer.

So read both boxes before you apply. If a listing names a city, a start date and a duration, say in your first two lines that you meet all three. For each named skill, point to one thing you have done with it, such as a class presentation, a poster made in Canva, or a college event you promoted. Leave out any skill you cannot point to.

No listing should ask you for money. Internshala's safety tips page puts "Asking for money" first among its red flags, naming "application fees, security deposits, training charges", and says "A genuine employer will never ask you to pay to get hired." If an employer does, the page tells you to stop communicating and report the employer.

Can NSS or volunteering stand in for experience?

Yes, if you can prove it. The National Service Scheme (NSS) FAQ of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports asks volunteers to put in "120 hours service each year" for two years along with their studies, plus one special camping programme, 240 hours of service in all. Any bona fide student can join, from Class 11 onwards.

Online volunteering is less open than it sounds. The United Nations Volunteers service tells organisations that Online Volunteers are to be "chosen based on their skills, knowledge, and experience", and that assignments are task-based, done entirely online and "no longer than 12 weeks". These rules are UNV's and govern its platform only. A first-timer competes there on a skill, just as on a listing board.

Proof decides whether volunteering reads as experience. IIT Madras's resume rules for its 2025-26 internship season ask for no proof of volunteering done on campus, but want a certificate or an email for anything done off campus, NGOs included. What does a first-timer get from a non-profit's own programme, and what not?

Applying to a non-profit's own programme puts you in touch with the host directly. The UGC guidelines name that kind of host alongside companies and labs: "Non-government organisations (NGOs)" appear in their list of workplaces where classroom learning meets real work. No college or portal has checked the host first, so verifying it falls to you.

Start with registration. NPO Darpan, which NITI Aayog runs, hands out its registration IDs against a self-declared affidavit and has a page listing blacklisted NPOs. It also says the ID carries no endorsement or recognition from NITI Aayog. An ID tells you the organisation declared itself on a government register and nothing about the internship, so ask for the rest in writing.

1. The task, in a sentence you could repeat in an interview.
2. The start and end dates, and the hours expected each week.
3. Who, by name, reviews what you send.
4. What you receive at the end, and who signs it.
5. Whether anything is asked of you in money. If a fee comes up, stop there.

Whether the work builds skills in your subject depends entirely on the task. A commerce student keeping a donor database and a commerce student running social media posts will leave with different things, so ask which task you are being offered before you accept.

What goes on a resume for an internship when you have no experience?

Projects, competitions, volunteering and responsibilities go where the internships would be. The Career Advising and Professional Development office of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) says "experience comes in many forms", and that alongside jobs and internships students should "consider including class projects, competitions or even personal projects". Its condition is that each is described "in terms that make its relevance clear".

Each line needs something behind it. The proof rules IIT Madras sets for its own students' resumes name what must back each kind of line, and the list works as a checklist for anyone. The specimen below uses that checklist; every bracketed item is a placeholder.

Skip adjectives about yourself. Internshala's own resume guide warns against self-description nobody can check, naming "hard working" and "team player", and wants achievements to carry the claim. The layout, section by section, is in the resume format guide for internships.

How do you apply for an internship without experience so it gets read?

Make the first lines answer the listing, and make every claim checkable. Internshala's resume guide says the objective line needs backing from internships or projects, and that the timeline and duration of each project belong next to a brief description. With no internships, your projects and volunteering do that job.

1. Copy the listing's conditions into a note and tick each one you meet. Apply only where you meet all of them, or say plainly which one you do not.
2. Open with the conditions: available from [date], for [duration], in [city] or remotely.
3. Match each skill the listing names to one line of your resume, with the proof ready if asked.
4. Send the resume as a PDF named with your name and college, as the Internshala guide recommends, and keep it in reverse chronological order.
5. Keep a list of where you applied and on what date, so a reply two weeks later still makes sense to you.
