Internship for freshers: where first internships come from

What should a fresher compare before picking a route?

Final-year students became eligible for the government's PM Internship Scheme only in a change announced on 22 April 2026, which is why eligibility is the first thing to compare. The others are pay, remote work, subject skills and whether the sender can be verified.

That scheme is one of five places a first internship can come from: listing platforms, government schemes, a company's own early-career programme, the college placement cell and a non-profit's own programme. Rate each on the same five criteria: whether it pays, whether a fresher is eligible, whether it can be done remotely, whether it teaches skills from your subject, and how easily you can check who is behind it.

• Listing platforms such as Internshala carry thousands of work-from-home listings, paid and unpaid, across many fields. Pay is set by each employer and ranges widely, from nothing to tens of thousands a month. Subject skills depend on the role. The platform hosts employers it does not run, and its own safety page tells applicants to do their due diligence before accepting an offer.
• The government schemes, the PM Internship Scheme and the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme, publish pay rules and run on official portals, which makes them the easiest to check. The internship scheme sets a monthly minimum. Eligibility is the catch: an age limit, an NOC for students, and for the apprenticeship scheme, going by its FAQ, an engineering or technology degree or diploma.
• A company's own early-career programme is checkable on the company's own site, and its training follows the company's own work. The catch is fit: a programme with the word "early career" in it can be meant for school leavers, as HCL's TechBee is, and not for graduates at all. Pay and remote options differ from company to company.
• The college placement cell brings recruiters to campus, and at a college such as Jesus and Mary College every offer letter is sent to the cell, so someone else sees the offer too. It serves only its own students and, in some colleges, alumni. It has rules of its own, deadlines and sometimes a registration fee, and a college without a working cell leaves you with the other four routes.
• A non-profit's programme, applied to directly. Pledge A Smile Foundation (the publisher of this guide) runs an online internship that is open to students of any stream and free to apply to and to do. Interns own a weekly target, send a weekly report and get feedback on it. There is a performance-based stipend and a certificate on completion. It does not teach subject-specific technical skills.

No route wins on every criterion. Pick the one that matters most to you this month, pay or remote work or subject skills, and let that decide. If you are still in your first or second year, the options sorted by year of study are in internships by year, course and format.

Do internship platforms have paid and work-from-home internships for freshers?

Yes. On 25 September 2026 Internshala's work-from-home page reported 2,330 work-from-home internships. Of the 50 listings on the first page that day, 12 read "Unpaid" and 38 named an amount, so roughly one in four first-page listings paid nothing. Counts on a listing board change by the hour; treat these as a dated snapshot.

The monthly amounts ran from "₹ 1,000 - 1,100 /month" at the bottom to "₹ 25,000 - 40,000 /month" at the top. One listing read "₹ 1,000 - 1,500 /week", and one read "₹ 1,500 - 15,000 lump sum", which is a total for the whole internship, not a monthly figure. HR internships for freshers do appear among the remote listings. The same page links an HR category, and two of the 50 first-page listings carried the title Human Resources (HR): one at ₹5,000 a month for six months, one unpaid for one month. Two listings is too few to say what HR pays in general.

Internshala's HR category page reported 598 HR internships on 25 September 2026, office and remote together. Of the 50 listings on its first page, one read "Unpaid" and one offered "₹ 15,000 lump sum". The other 48 named a monthly amount, from "₹ 1,500 - 3,000 /month" to "₹ 20,000 - 22,000 /month", and 18 of them started at ₹9,000 a month or more. Treat it as a dated snapshot of HR pay.

Which government internship schemes pay freshers?

Two schemes publish pay rules: the PM Internship Scheme and the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS). A Press Information Bureau release from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, posted on 22 April 2026, says a fresher placed under the Prime Minister Internship Scheme is paid no less than ₹9,000 a month in financial assistance, and that "eligible youth between 18-25 years of age can apply" through the official portal.

The same release widened the pilot phase of the scheme to final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students. They must still meet the scheme's existing criteria and get an NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the college, signed by the head of department, the principal, a dean or the college's training and placement officer, confirming the internship will not interfere with their studies.

Freshers who read older posts will meet different numbers. The scheme's FAQ page, written for the pilot, still quotes twelve months on placement at ₹5,000 monthly for applicants between 21 and 24. Registration happens on pminternship.mca.gov.in, so read the terms shown there on the day you sign up.

The scheme is still a pilot. The release counts over 300 participating companies in the pilot so far, and says its third round was underway in April 2026, with companies posting openings on an ongoing basis. The second government route is an apprenticeship, not an internship. The National Apprenticeship Training Scheme page says apprentices are paid a stipend, "50% of which is reimbursable to the employer from Government of India", and receive a Certificate of Proficiency at the end. The same page says there is "no guarantee of employment after completion of training".

Who the scheme takes is the main question for a fresher. Its FAQ page, answering an M.Tech student, says "We are dealing only with Graduate / Diploma in Engineering or Technology." The about page says disciplines "shall be extended further to Commerce, Arts, Humanities, Management domains", and gives the training length as "6 months to 1 year". Ask the portal which disciplines and length apply to your seat before you plan around the scheme.

The NATS home page adds two registration steps. e-KYC verification through Aadhaar is mandatory before a candidate is eligible for apprenticeship training, and an APAAR ID is mandatory for new student registration and for receiving the government share of the stipend.

On pay, the minimum apprentice stipend rose from 11 September 2025, the date Gazette notification G.S.R. 610(E) amending the Apprenticeship Rules was published. A Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship memo sets the new minimum at ₹6,800 to ₹12,300 a month, depending on qualification: ₹10,900 for a diploma holder and ₹12,300 for a graduate. Establishments may pay more than the minimum.

Is HCL's programme an internship for freshers?

Not for graduates, going by HCLTech's own announcement of 12 December 2024. It invited applications for TechBee, which it calls an "early career program", and said students who cleared Class 12 in 2023 or 2024, or would clear it in 2025, were eligible.

The same announcement says selected candidates "undergo 12 months of training with HCLTech", are offered full-time jobs on successful completion, and can study part time at BITS Pilani, IIIT Kottayam, SASTRA University or Amity University Online. It says students with a background in mathematics or business mathematics can apply for technology roles.

TechBee's own site, hcltechbee.com, described it on 25 September 2026 as a programme that "offers assured jobs to students right after Class XII". So TechBee is a training-to-job route for school leavers, and neither page offers an HCL internship for freshers who have graduated.

What HCLTech lists for graduates, on its campus hiring page, are jobs. Engineering graduates with a B.E., B.Tech, M.E. or M.Tech join as a Graduate Engineer Trainee; MBA and PGDM graduates join as a Management Graduate; and Graduate Trainee roles, which the page says need no technology expertise, are open to BA, BBA, BCom, BCA, BSc and BPharma graduates. The page does not use the word internship.

The same page calls AMP "a meritocratic selection process for fresh engineering graduates". Candidates applying to Lucknow, Nagpur, Vijayawada and Madurai need "65% or above throughout academics (Class 10, Class 12 and graduation)"; for all other locations the criterion is 70% or above.

What can a college placement cell do for a first internship?

It brings recruiters to you and keeps a record of every offer. The Placement Cell of Jesus and Mary College, University of Delhi, says in its Student's Guide 2025-26 that in 2024-25, 176 or more companies came to offer internships to its pre-final year, final year and alumni batches.

The same guide shows the cost of that help. Registration with the cell is mandatory to take part, and the 2025-26 fee was ₹100, non-refundable and in cash. Direct contact with recruiters is "strictly prohibited"; everything goes through the cell. A student who registers for a drive and drops out of the process can be debarred from later internship drives.

Those are one college's rules. Other colleges set their own, and some have no cell at all. If your cell exists, register early and read its rules before you apply anywhere through it. If you find an internship outside it, read how to get your college's sign-off for NGO work before you start.

What does a non-profit's own programme offer a fresher, and what does it not?

It offers work at a recognised kind of host. The University Grants Commission's undergraduate internship guidelines of 2023 list non-government organisations alongside government and private organisations, research labs and local industry as places where internships happen. It may not offer lab or coding practice.

Subject depth depends on the role. If the work is outreach, reports, events or awareness, a B.Tech or B.Sc student should not expect lab or coding practice from it unless the role description says so. Ask what the work is before you accept, and ask whether your department will count it.

Ask whether the role pays, because that is set by each organisation. If a programme asks you for a fee, walk away. Before you apply, search for the organisation on NGO Darpan, which NITI Aayog runs. A Darpan ID is issued against an affidavit the organisation itself signs, and Darpan hands out no paper certificate, so the ID shows that the organisation registered on its own declaration.

How much do freshers get paid on each route?

For a paid internship for freshers, the two government schemes state a monthly floor in rupees. The PM Internship Scheme's is a minimum of ₹9,000 per month under the 22 April 2026 release. Its pilot-era FAQ shows ₹5,000 instead, so confirm the figure on the portal. For apprentices, the minimum stipend has been ₹6,800 to ₹12,300 a month since 11 September 2025, with ₹12,300 for graduates.

A single first page is not an average. On that snapshot, 14 of the 50 listings started at ₹9,000 a month or more, level with the PMIS minimum or above it. Stipends by field, with the surveys behind them, are in how much paid interns earn.

How do you check a first offer before saying yes?

Check the sender against an official record before you share documents or money. For the PM Internship Scheme, the release names one portal, pminternship.mca.gov.in, and the portal lists its contacts as [email protected] and a toll-free line, 1800 11 6090. An offer that claims to be PMIS but arrives from any other address deserves a call to that number.

1. Find the organisation on its own official register: the company's own website, the NATS portal for an apprenticeship, or NGO Darpan and its Blacklisted NPOs list for a non-profit.
2. Refuse to pay. Internshala's own safety page says a real employer does not charge you for being hired, and it lists application fees, security deposits and training charges as red flags.
3. Match the offer to the listing. If the role, hours or pay differ from what you applied for, ask in writing before you accept.
4. If you applied through your college, tell the placement cell. The Jesus and Mary College guide, for one, requires selected candidates to email their offer letters to the cell.
