Marketing internship for students: what you do
Looking for an internship? Apply to Pledge A Smile FoundationShort answer
A marketing internship covers customer research, content and campaign reporting under a supervisor, but many listings filed under marketing are sales or telecalling roles with targets. On 25 September 2026, 26 of the 60 first-page marketing listings on Internshala had sales-type titles. Read the numbered duties and the stipend unit before the job title.

What does a marketing intern do day to day?
O*NET, the US Department of Labor's occupation database, lists 13 tasks for Market Research Analysts and Marketing Specialists, the closest match to intern work. The first it displays is preparing reports that chart data and put findings into writing; others include gathering competitors' prices and sales, designing surveys, and measuring whether campaigns work. The profile is American and sets no Indian pay.
At intern level, expect a junior version of those tasks under a supervisor: finding out about customers and competitors, making material such as posts, emails and pitch decks, and reporting what last week's campaign did. The mix depends on the host, and the numbered duties in a listing show which of these it leans on.
| Task in the O*NET profile | What an intern version might look like |
|---|---|
| Gather data on competitors and analyze their prices, sales, and method of marketing and distribution | A sheet comparing five rival products on price, offers and where they advertise |
| Devise and evaluate methods and procedures for collecting data, such as surveys, opinion polls, or questionnaires | Drafting a 10-question customer survey and cleaning the responses |
| Measure the effectiveness of marketing, advertising, and communications programs and strategies | A weekly note on clicks, sign-ups or enquiries from each post or email |
| Monitor industry statistics and follow trends in trade literature | A short digest of what competitors launched this month |
Take a hypothetical B.Com student at a packaged-food brand. Monday is updating the competitor price sheet. Wednesday goes on writing captions for a festive offer. Friday ends with a one-page report and two charts for the manager.
Is a marketing internship sometimes a sales job?
Yes, often. On 25 September 2026, 26 of the 60 first-page listings in Internshala's marketing category had Sales, Business Development, Lead Generation, Telecalling or Telecaller in the job title. A listing filed under marketing can be a calling job. Read the numbered duties before the title.
The sales-leaning duty lists on that page asked interns to call leads, follow up, convert enquiries into customers or enrolments and meet daily or monthly targets. Some students want exactly that experience. It is a different job from research and content.
Pay on these roles can be split. One first-page listing showed "₹ 4,000 - 10,000 /week" for a duration of 2 Weeks in its header, and its description set out a fixed ₹2,000 with ₹2,000 additional for every converted lead. Copy the unit exactly when you compare offers: a weekly figure for two weeks is not a monthly stipend, and a fixed part plus incentive is not a guaranteed total.
If the duties are mostly calls and targets, ask the host three things in writing before you accept: what counts as a conversion, when the incentive is paid, and whether any target has to be met before the fixed part is paid.
What is a digital marketing internship and how is it different?
A digital marketing internship is the online share of the work: search, social media, email, ads and the website. Internshala files it as its own category, which showed 2,558 digital marketing internships on 25 September 2026 against 3,841 under marketing. On the marketing page's first 60 listings, 13 had Digital Marketing, Social Media or SEO in the title.
The O*NET profile already reaches into this ground. Its summary says the occupation "May employ search marketing tactics, analyze web metrics, and develop recommendations to increase search engine ranking and visibility to target markets." Its software list names Google Ads and HubSpot under sales and marketing software. A general marketing internship can also be offline: Retail Marketing, Merchandising and Field Sales Support all appeared as first-page titles, and one sales listing's duties included attending trade shows and events.
The tools are named on both sides. O*NET's software list for the occupation also includes Google Analytics, WordPress, Adobe Photoshop, Instagram and Facebook. One first-page SEO and content listing opened on 25 September 2026 listed keyword research, on-page SEO and link building among its must-have skills, and asked for tracking in Google Search Console and Google Analytics (GA4).
Social media is one slice of digital marketing, and a separate guide covers social media internships on their own. If you want the same work at a charity, the NGO version is covered in the guide to digital marketing internships at non-profits.
What skills should you have before you apply?
Spreadsheets, clear writing and a basic grasp of surveys are the skills the task profile and the listings keep pointing to. The O*NET software list for the occupation includes Microsoft Excel, Google Docs, Google Slides and Microsoft PowerPoint alongside the specialist tools. On Internshala's first marketing page, MS-Excel appeared as a skill tag 14 times and spoken English 24 times.
Survey design is on the task list too. O*NET's task list includes devising "surveys, opinion polls, or questionnaires". Practise by running a short Google Form among 30 classmates on a product they all use, then write up what you found in a page. That page is a work sample you can attach.
If the job involves posting about a brand, learn the ASCI Guidelines for Influencer Advertising in Digital Media. They say "Disclosure is required if there is any material connection between the advertiser and the influencer," and their definition of material connection includes "any family or employment relationship". Employee is one of the permitted labels, alongside Ad, Sponsored and Collaboration.
The same guidelines set timings for video. A label on a video of 15 seconds or less must stay for at least 3 seconds; on a video longer than 15 seconds but under 2 minutes it should stay for a third of the length. ASCI is the advertising industry's own body. Its page on self-regulation describes a system the ad industry "has willingly established", which complements the legal framework rather than being a law.
Do you need a marketing degree for a marketing internship?
Not as a rule; it depends on the listing. Four first-page Internshala marketing listings opened on 25 September 2026 each carried a "Who can apply" block (full-time availability, a start window, a duration, a home city on some, and "relevant skills and interests"), and three added an "Other requirements" section. Two of the four named a degree there and two named none.
One client-servicing role asked for a "Bachelor's degree in management (BMS/BMM/BBA) with a specialization in Marketing". A media-planning role asked for B.E. or B.Tech graduates from a Tier-1 engineering institution, with deep comfort in Microsoft Excel. Four listings are a sample, not a census, so read the Other requirements section of each listing before you write a cover note.
A student from another stream competes with evidence. The two work samples in the last section of this guide, attached to a resume (the internship resume format guide helps here), answer the "relevant skills" line directly.
Can you do digital marketing internship work from home?
Yes, and in large numbers. Internshala's work-from-home digital marketing page showed 797 internships on 25 September 2026. Of the 51 on its first page, 8 said Unpaid, 8 said Performance Based, three said "₹ 1,000 /month", one gave "₹ 5,000 - 5,500 lump sum" for a week, and the rest showed a monthly figure.
The sales question follows you home. Eleven of those 51 remote listings had Sales, Business Development, Telecalling or Lead Generation in the title. Another eight were campus ambassador roles, and all eight were the Performance Based ones.
Before you accept a home-based role, find out who reviews your drafts, what you deliver each week, and whether you work inside the brand's own accounts and tools or are asked to post from your personal profile. The guide to how home-based internships are run covers supervision and hours in more depth.
What do marketing internships in Mumbai and Bangalore look like?
On 25 September 2026 Internshala's city pages showed 1,691 marketing internships under Mumbai and 1,564 under Bangalore. On both first pages the most frequent stipend line was "₹ 10,000 - 15,000 /month": 6 of the 51 Mumbai listings and 8 of the 54 Bangalore ones. These are live counts from one day and change daily.
The Mumbai page is wider than the city. Its first page included listings located in Thane and Navi Mumbai, so read each location line before you assume the office is in Mumbai itself. Sixteen of the 51 had sales-type titles, 8 were marked Hybrid, and none said Unpaid.
Some Mumbai listings restrict who can apply by city. Two Mumbai-area listings opened on 25 September 2026 limited their Who can apply block to candidates "from Mumbai only" and "from Thane, Navi Mumbai, Mumbai only", both for full-time in-office work. On the 25 September snapshots of both city pages, every stipend was quoted per month and none per year; the LPA figures some listings showed belonged to a job after the internship.
On the same day, a search for a marketing internship in Bangalore returned a first page that leaned further towards sales: 23 of 54 titles carried Sales, Business Development, Telecalling or Lead Generation. Seven were Hybrid and one was Unpaid. Some listings name several cities at once and appear on more than one city page, so never add city totals together or read them as separate offices.
Which route to a marketing internship fits you?
Four routes lead to a marketing internship: your college placement cell, the AICTE National Internship Portal, a listing platform such as Internshala, and a non-profit's own scheme. Tested on fee, college credit, supervision, technical skills taught and pay structure, no route wins on all five. Never pay to intern; the guide to internship fee scams lists the warning signs.
- Your college placement cell. It is run by your own college rather than a paid agent, and under the UGC's 2023 guidelines the institution nominates an internship supervisor who monitors the student and ensures a completion certificate is issued. Technical skills and pay depend on the company it brings in. It loses on choice: you take the marketing roles its recruiters happen to offer that term.
- The AICTE National Internship Portal. By its own account a student pays ₹0 at every step, from sign-up to the completion certificate, and marketing roles sit in its Design, Media and Marketing stream. Supervision, stipend and the skills you pick up depend on the host you are matched with. It loses on range, because marketing is one stream among many on the portal.
- A listing platform such as Internshala, whose FAQ says "You need not pay anything to apply on Internshala." It showed 3,841 marketing listings on 25 September 2026. Supervision and skills depend wholly on the employer. It loses on pay structure: stipends appear per month, per week, as lump sums, as Performance Based or Unpaid, so offers are hard to compare.
- Going straight to a non-profit that runs its own scheme. Pledge A Smile Foundation (the publisher of this guide) runs an online internship that is open to students of any stream and free to apply to and to do. Interns own a weekly target, send a weekly report and get feedback on it. There is a performance-based stipend and a certificate on completion. It does not teach subject-specific technical skills.
For where first internships tend to come from in general, see the guide to internships for freshers.
How do you get a marketing internship with no experience?
Make two small work samples that match the tasks in the O*NET profile, then apply only to listings whose duties match them. A one-page competitor report and a set of three sample posts show more than a list of courses. Build them in a fortnight, before you send a single application.
- Pick a product you know and five rivals. Record price, offers and where each advertises, and write one page with one chart.
- Run a 10-question survey among classmates and summarise the answers in five lines.
- Write three posts or one email for the product, with a disclosure label wherever the ASCI guidelines would require one.
- Read each listing's numbered duties, sort them into research, content or sales, and apply to the kind you want.
Check credit before you start. The UGC's 2023 internship guidelines set a compulsory internship, after the 4th semester, of 60 to 120 hours for students enrolled in UG degree programmes. In their arithmetic one credit is two hours of engagement weekly; over a 15-week semester that totals 30 hours. Ask your department how your university applies this before you start.
The broader method is in the guide to getting an internship with no experience. If you are doing a BBA with a marketing major, the guide to internships for BBA students covers the course-specific rules.
- 1O*NET, the US Department of Labor's occupation database, lists 13 tasks for Market Research Analysts and Marketing Specialists; the first it displays is preparing reports that turn data into charts and written findings.
- 2On 25 September 2026, 26 of the 60 first-page listings in Internshala's marketing category had Sales, Business Development, Lead Generation, Telecalling or Telecaller in the title.
- 3The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) Guidelines for Influencer Advertising in Digital Media count an employment relationship as a material connection, so a brand post by someone working for the brand should carry a label such as Employee.
- 4The University Grants Commission's Guidelines for Internship/Research Internship for Under Graduate Students (2023) make a 60 to 120 hour internship after the 4th semester mandatory for UG degree students, with one credit equal to two hours a week.
Is a marketing internship paid?
On one board's first page, nearly all were. Of the 60 first-page marketing listings on Internshala on 25 September 2026, 56 gave a stipend per month, 2 gave a figure per week, 1 was Performance Based and 1 said Unpaid. The two weekly ones ran for 1 Week and 2 Weeks, so compare the unit and the duration together.
What does LPA mean on a marketing internship listing?
LPA means lakh per annum, a yearly salary figure. On the first pages of Internshala's Mumbai and Bangalore marketing listings on 25 September 2026, every stipend was stated per month and none per year; LPA amounts appeared only on job offer labels or in descriptions of full-time pay after the internship.
How long does a marketing internship last?
Anything from a week to six months on the listings. On Internshala's first marketing page on 25 September 2026, 25 of 60 listings said 6 Months and 23 said 3 Months, with the shortest at 1 Week. Check the length against your semester, since UGC credit is counted in hours.
Should I pay for a marketing internship?
No. Internshala's help centre FAQ says it is strictly against its policy for an employer to charge students, and asks you to report such a request. The AICTE National Internship Portal calls it a scam when any website, agent or placement consultant asks a student to pay to apply through the portal.
What is a campus ambassador internship?
A promotion role at your own college. Internshala's FAQ calls a campus ambassador the face and voice of the company in his/her campus. On 25 September 2026, all eight Performance Based listings on its first work-from-home digital marketing page were campus ambassador roles, so the pay depends on results.
Can a marketing internship lead to a job offer?
Some listings say so. Of the 60 first-page marketing listings on Internshala on 25 September 2026, 12 carried a label reading Job offer upto or Job offer starting, followed by an amount in LPA. Upto is a ceiling rather than a promise, so ask what decides the offer before you join.
