Digital marketing internship at an NGO: what you do and how to get one
Looking for an internship? Apply to Pledge A Smile FoundationShort answer
A digital marketing internship at an NGO uses the same tools as a company role, from SEO to Google Analytics, but counts different results: Google's Ad Grants account management policy lists volunteer sign-ups, email sign-ups and petitions signed among non-profit conversion goals. Pick the route by what you need: tools, a stipend or college credit.

What does a digital marketing intern at an NGO do each week?
The National Qualification Register of the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET) describes the entry-level role, Digital Marketing Assistant, as someone "responsible for assisting in planning, developing, implementing online marketing strategy and online marketing activities." At a non-profit that assistance can land in a few places: the organisation's social accounts, its website and search listing, its email list, and the monthly numbers that show whether any of it worked.
Read that register line as the government's own job description for the entry role, and hold the roles and responsibilities in each listing up against it.
Take a hypothetical week at a small education charity. On Monday you draft captions for a volunteer drive, on Tuesday you fix the page that drive points to so it shows up in search, midweek you write an email to people who signed last month's petition, and on Friday you pull the week's figures into a sheet for your supervisor.
If most of the job is posting, the guide to what a social media internship involves fits it better.
Some non-profits run search ads through Google's Ad Grants programme, and its account rules can shape the intern's week. Google's account management policy says an Ad Grants account not run only on Smart campaigns must keep a 5% click-through rate each month at account level, and that accounts created on or after 1 January 2018 must accrue at least 1 conversion per month.
Two months in a row below the click-through rate and the account is temporarily deactivated. These rules bind the organisation's account, and an intern may be the one asked to watch them.
The same policy asks for things an intern can set up under supervision. Each account needs location targeting that shows ads where users will find the organisation's information and services useful, and at least 2 unique sitelink ad assets. Accounts created on or after 22 April 2019 must use conversion-based Smart bidding, such as Maximize conversions or Target CPA, for every campaign unless they run Smart campaigns. Learning what those settings do is a fair first-month goal.
How is NGO digital marketing different from company marketing?
The tools are the same; the goals counted are wider. NCVET's Media and Entertainment sector qualification file for a Digital Marketing Manager says the job exists "to increase brands online visibility and generate leads/sales." Google's Ad Grants account management policy for non-profits lists a wider set of "meaningful conversion goals", including "volunteer sign-ups", "email sign-ups", "petitions signed" and "membership registrations".
That can change what you report. The manager file frames company work around leads and sales. At a non-profit that tracks the goals on Google's list, you may be asked instead how many people registered to volunteer, joined the mailing list or signed a petition after a campaign. Donations, purchases and ticket sales sit on Google's list too, but they are three of its twelve examples.
Ask two questions at interview. Is there any paid advertising budget at all, or will your posts, emails and search listings carry the whole load? And does the campaign speak to the people the organisation serves, to its supporters, or to both? For the wider marketing role inside a firm, read the guide to what a marketing intern does at a company.
Which skills do you need before you apply?
The entry-level Digital Marketing Assistant qualification maps the skills a first role draws on: SEO, SEM, online and social media marketing, Google AdSense and affiliate marketing, Google Analytics and basic communication. That qualification, on NCVET's National Qualification Register, is a Level 3 qualification in the IT-ITeS sector awarded by HARTRON (Haryana State Electronics Development Corporation Limited), with eight modules totalling a maximum of 144 notional hours.
| Module (Digital Marketing Assistant, Level 3) | Hours |
|---|---|
| Introduction to Digital Marketing | 8 |
| Search Engine Optimization (SEO) | 16 |
| Search Engine Marketing (SEM) | 16 |
| Online Marketing | 22 |
| Social Media Marketing (SMM) | 24 |
| Google AdSense and Affiliate Marketing | 24 |
| Google Analytics | 26 |
| Basic Communication Skills | 8 |
The register names the jobs this qualification leads to as "Digital MarketingAssistant, Social Media Associate", with Digital Marketing Executive as the next professional step. Google Analytics carries the most hours of the eight modules, at 26. For an NGO role, add the habit of writing plainly for people who are not customers.
The Digital Marketing Manager file is a different animal. It sits at NSQF Level 6 and expects, for example, a postgraduate degree, or a graduate degree in digital marketing or social media plus one year of relevant experience. Its other entry routes ask for one to three years of relevant experience, so treat it as a senior job further up the ladder and keep it out of any description of intern work.
Can you do a digital marketing internship from home?
Yes, and plenty are advertised that way. Internshala's remote listings page read "797 Work From Home Digital Marketing Internships" when checked on 25 September 2026. That count covers every digital marketing internship on the board marked work from home, from companies and non-profits alike, and it changes daily.
Most modules in the Level 3 list above, such as SEO, social media and analytics, are screen work that a laptop and a steady connection can handle. The UGC's 2023 internship guidelines list "hybrid model learning" among their objectives, "combining physical and digital modes of learning". What makes a remote internship real is a named supervisor and a regular check on your work; the guide to how remote internships are run covers that part.
Remote posts need more checking, since you may never meet the host. Internshala's safety tips page treats a request to pay "application fees, security deposits, training charges" as a red flag and says "A genuine employer will never ask you to pay to get hired." It also advises sharing Aadhaar, PAN, bank details or OTPs only after you have been selected and the documents are genuinely required.
Some paid programmes sold as virtual internships are courses with a certificate; the guide to the types and costs of virtual internships in India sorts one from the other.
Where are digital marketing internships listed in Bangalore, Delhi and Chennai?
Internshala publishes a page per city. On 25 September 2026 those pages showed 1,378 digital marketing internships under Delhi, 1,011 under Bangalore and 844 under Chennai, against 2,558 on the all-India page. These counts cover all digital marketing listings, company and non-profit alike.
The three city figures add up to 3,233, more than the national 2,558, so the city pages overlap. Do not add them up or read them as office jobs in that city. To find the NGO roles, open a city page and search within it for non-profit, NGO or foundation, then check each host's registration before applying.
On the Delhi page that day, four first-page listings read "₹ 12,000 - 15,000 /month". Check whether a listing is in office, hybrid or remote before you count commuting time. For non-profit hosts in the capital across every kind of role, see the guide to NGO internships in Delhi.
How long is a digital marketing internship?
Checked on 25 September 2026, the first-page listings on Internshala's all-India digital marketing page ran from 1 week to 6 months, and 6 Months and 3 Months were the durations shown most often. The work-from-home page that day leaned shorter: 3 Months and 1 Month were the most common, with fewer 6-month posts.
Those figures cover all digital marketing listings, company and non-profit, and change daily. For college, the length that counts is hours. Take a hypothetical one-month remote post at 10 hours a week: about 40 hours, short of the UGC's 60-hour lower figure. Three months at the same pace comes to about 130, so ask for the weekly hours in writing.
Which route to a digital marketing internship fits you?
The route that fits depends on what you need most. For college credit, your college placement cell leads; for a stated stipend, a listing platform or AICTE's National Internship Portal. Each route below is judged on five things, in this order: whether it charges a fee to apply, whether your college will count it for credit, who supervises you, whether it teaches you the tools, and whether it pays a stipend.
- A listing platform such as Internshala. Its own FAQ calls it a free platform for applicants. It shows thousands of digital marketing listings from companies and non-profits alike, with stipends stated on each and some marked Unpaid. Tool training varies by host. It loses on supervision, which depends entirely on the host and has to be checked listing by listing.
- AICTE's National Internship Portal. Its home page puts the cost to students of signing up, applying, shortlisting and the certificate at ₹0, and it has a Design, Media and Marketing stream. The portal says stipends are declared upfront. It loses on credit, which is left open: the portal lists "Will my university count this as my mandatory internship?" among its own questions, so ask your department before you start.
- Your college placement cell. It wins on credit when the college arranges the internship under its own rules; the UGC's 2023 guidelines expect the institution to nominate an internship supervisor who monitors the intern and ensures a completion certificate is issued. Stipend and tool training depend on whichever host the cell finds for you that term. It loses on choice, since you work with the hosts the cell already has.
- A non-profit's own programme, applied to directly. Pledge A Smile Foundation (the publisher of this guide) runs an online internship that is open to students of any stream and free to apply to and to do. Interns own a weekly target, send a weekly report and get feedback on it. There is a performance-based stipend and a certificate on completion. It does not teach subject-specific technical skills.
Whichever route you take, a request for money before you start is a reason to stop; the guide to never paying to intern sets out the checks. The UGC guidelines list non-government organisations among the hosts an undergraduate internship can be done with, and the guide to how NGO internships work covers the rest.
If credit matters, do the arithmetic before you pick. The same UGC document says one credit of internship means two hours of engagement a week, which in a 15-week semester equals 30 hours. A 60-hour internship is therefore worth 2 credits and a 120-hour one 4, provided your university records it under those guidelines.
Are NGO digital marketing internships paid?
Some are and some are not; the listing tells you which. On Internshala's all-India digital marketing page on 25 September 2026, first-page stipends were written per month, for example "₹ 10,000 - 12,000 /month" and "₹ 3,000 - 5,000 /month", and a few listings read "Unpaid". The work-from-home page that day showed 8 Unpaid listings on its first page against 3 on the all-India page, and some stipends of "₹ 1,000 /month".
Those are figures for all digital marketing listings, so they do not tell you what NGOs pay as a group. Read each stipend line exactly: a range per month, a lump sum such as "₹ 5,000 - 5,500 lump sum" and a performance-based amount are different promises. Never average them, and ask the host in writing what triggers any variable part before you accept.
How do you show NGO marketing work on a resume?
Write down the numbers the organisation already tracks. Google requires Ad Grants accounts to set up conversion tracking, so a non-profit using it records how many people completed actions such as email sign-ups or volunteer sign-ups. If you ran or supported a campaign, those figures are your evidence, provided your supervisor agrees you may quote them.
A strong line names the task, the channel and the result: "Wrote and scheduled a six-week email series to new supporters; volunteer registrations from email rose from [number] to [number]."
Keep a copy of the report you sent that month. Quote only figures your supervisor has seen, and never claim a result from an account you could view but did not run; a recruiter who asks how you reached the number will want the steps, the tools and the dates. For layout and wording, see the guide to putting an internship on your resume and LinkedIn.
- 1The government's Level 3 Digital Marketing Assistant qualification covers eight modules in a maximum of 144 notional hours, with Google Analytics the largest at 26.
- 2Google's Ad Grants policy lists volunteer sign-ups, email sign-ups and petitions signed among the conversion goals a non-profit's account can track.
- 3On 25 September 2026 Internshala showed 2,558 digital marketing internships across India and 797 marked work from home; both counts cover every kind of host, NGO or company.
- 4On Internshala's digital marketing pages on 25 September 2026, stipends were written per month, as a lump sum or as Unpaid; read the unit exactly and never average them.
- 5The UGC's 2023 guidelines name non-government organisations among internship hosts and make 60 to 120 hours mandatory after the fourth semester of a UG degree.
Do I need a digital marketing certificate before applying?
Check the skills line of each listing, since that is the requirement for that post. A certificate can show you have covered the ground: the government's Level 3 Digital Marketing Assistant qualification, awarded by HARTRON (Haryana State Electronics Development Corporation Limited), runs to a maximum of 144 notional hours across eight modules, from SEO to Google Analytics.
Does an NGO digital marketing internship count as the UGC mandatory internship?
It can. The UGC's Guidelines for Internship/Research Internship for Under Graduate Students (2023) list non-government organisations among internship hosts and make 60 to 120 hours mandatory after the fourth semester of a UG degree. Whether a particular NGO placement counts is your college's decision, so get your department's approval before you start.
Is a work-from-home digital marketing internship safe?
It can be, if a named supervisor reviews your work. On 25 September 2026, Internshala listed 797 work-from-home digital marketing internships from all kinds of hosts. Its safety tips page advises sharing Aadhaar, PAN, bank details or OTPs only after selection, when genuinely required. Ask whether you will use the organisation's own accounts or your personal ones.
Is Internshala free for students applying to digital marketing internships?
Yes. Internshala's FAQ says it is a free platform and that you do not have to pay anything to apply for internships on it. Its safety tips page treats requests for application fees, security deposits or training charges as a red flag, and says a genuine employer will never ask you to pay to get hired.
What does an NGO's certificate for a digital marketing internship record?
Check that it names the organisation, your dates and your role, and that the host will confirm each one if a college or employer asks. Under the UGC's 2023 guidelines, a college-nominated internship supervisor ensures a completion certificate is issued and the internship should be followed by one project report. Keep your own copies of those reports as well.
