How to add an internship to LinkedIn and your resume

What proof of the internship should you have before you write it?

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras's Resume Guidelines for the Internship Season 2025-26 accept only a fixed list of proofs for a finished internship: a relieving letter or the completion certificate, or the offer letter paired with the company's mail acknowledging that you finished or with stipend payment records showing its name. For a research internship, a professor's letter giving the project title and the start and end dates is enough.

That is one institute's rule for its own placement season. It is also a good test for any student anywhere, because it asks what a stranger could check. For an internship still running, the same document accepts an offer letter with a mail stating the internship is ongoing. For volunteering outside the institute, at an NGO for example, it says "a certificate/mail is required".

Before you add internship experience in a resume, put these in one folder: the offer letter, the completion certificate or email, any stipend credit on your bank statement, the emails that set your tasks, and a copy of what you produced. If the certificate has not come yet, read up on internship completion certificates and ask for it now, while your supervisor still remembers your work.

Step 1: Where does an internship go on a resume?

Under an Experience or Internships heading, newest first. Internshala's resume guide tells students to "Always follow the reverse chronological order (i.e. most recent ones first)" for internships and projects as well as education. Harvard's Mignone Center for Career Success, in its college guide to a strong resume, gives the same order within each heading.

An internship experience entry on a resume needs four facts on its first line or two: the organisation, your role title as it appears in the offer letter, the place or "Remote", and the start and end months. Internshala's guide puts it as "Always mention timeline & duration" of internships along with a brief description.

Harvard's guide adds two layout points. List headings such as Experience "in order of importance", so a fresher or second-year whose internship is the strongest thing on the page can place it straight under Education. And do not "Start each line with a date"; put the dates at the right-hand end of the title line instead.

Step 2: How do you write the internship bullets?

Open each bullet with a verb, say what you made or did, and close on a number or an output someone could check. MIT's Career Advising & Professional Development office, in its resume guidance, says to start descriptions "with a strong action verb like built, managed, developed, wrote" and to "Quantify if you can."

Harvard's guide asks for language that is "Fact-based (quantify and qualify)" and lists personal pronouns such as I or We among the things to leave out.

MIT also warns that experience descriptions "shouldn't read like job descriptions". Compare two hypothetical lines for the same work. "Responsible for social media posts" copies the job title's promise. "Drafted 24 Instagram captions over six weeks; 9 were published after edits" shows the output and is modest enough to be believed.

Name the tool or method. MIT's advice is to say how you did a task as well as what you did, such as the programming language for software or the technique for lab work. For an office internship that might be Excel, Canva or Google Forms.

Leave out the adjectives. Internshala's guide asks students to refrain from "unverifiable platitudes" such as calling themselves hard working, sincere and a team player, and to let achievements speak instead. How many bullets is your call; if a short internship produced three things you can count, three bullets carry it. If you are asked how to write internship experience in a CV for a research or overseas application, the answer is the same three parts: verb, output, number.

Match the words of the listing. MIT's guidance notes that employers may use keyword scanning on resumes, so the terms relevant to the industry and position should appear in yours. Harvard's guide says to tailor the resume to the type of position. Rewrite the internship experience for each resume version you send to a different role, and keep the facts identical in each; the application letter and email samples show the message that goes with it.

Step 3: How do you describe an NGO internship with numbers that hold up?

Count what you did yourself, in units the organisation's own records would show: sessions held, people who attended, forms processed, pages written, hours logged. MIT's example is exactly that kind of count: "If you gave a presentation, include how many people attended."

A hypothetical line that holds up: "Ran 16 English reading sessions for a group of 14 Class 6 students over eight weeks; 11 finished the term's reading list." A line that does not: "Improved literacy in the community." The first is a count of your own work that a supervisor can confirm. The second claims an outcome no single intern can prove.

Take the counts from the same records you used for your report, so the two never disagree; the guide to writing an NGO internship report covers that document.

Use the organisation's name and your actual role, and never inflate a volunteer stint into a job title it did not have. Step 4: How do you add an internship to LinkedIn?

Add it as a position in the Experience section, through Add profile section, then the Core dropdown, then Add position. LinkedIn's help page on managing the Experience section, opened on 25 September 2026, says you can add "a job, internship or contract position among others" there. On a computer the steps are:

1. Click the Me icon at the top of your LinkedIn homepage, then View Profile.
2. Click Add profile section in your introduction section.
3. Open the Core dropdown and choose Add position.
4. Fill in the Add experience window and click Save.

On the app the help page's route is the same in outline: tap your profile photo, tap it again to reach your profile, tap Add section, then Add position under Core.

Pick the organisation from the drop-down list as you type, which shows the logo and name from its LinkedIn Page next to your entry. Add skills to the position, since the help page says they will also appear in your Skills section. And set the employment type, which LinkedIn's page on grouping positions advises specifying for each position so that progress within one organisation shows.

Positions at one organisation are grouped when the new one starts within one month of the previous one's end date, so an internship followed by a job at the same place appears as one run with its total tenure.

To show the work itself, LinkedIn's page on adding profile sections says a link goes into the Projects section through Add media, then Add a link. A published report, a set of posts or a public dashboard can sit there; ask the organisation before you link any of its work.

Use the description box for the same verb-and-number lines as your resume, trimmed to what fits.

To add internship experience to LinkedIn without a post going out, check one setting before you save the entry. LinkedIn's help page on sharing profile updates gives the route on a computer: the Me icon, Settings & Privacy, the Visibility tab, then Share profile updates under Visibility of your LinkedIn activity; Off stops the sharing.

With it on, a change may generate a post in your network's feed, an in-app notification or an email, and a job update can take up to two hours to be shared. Either way, anyone who views your profile sees the entry as soon as you save it.

Step 5: Does it go under Experience or Volunteer experience on LinkedIn?

An internship goes under Experience. LinkedIn's profile experience association guidelines say entries there "must be accurately labeled and must reflect professional experience with the named organization, such as employment, contract work, official internship or volunteer experience". Volunteer experience also has its own section, listed under Additional in the Add profile section menu.

So the rule is about the label, and the section follows from it. An internship with an offer letter and a role title is labelled as an internship. A weekend spent helping at a charity drive is volunteering, whichever section you place it in. The same guidelines give being "a customer or user of an organization's products or services" as an example of what should not be listed, which is worth remembering before you add a company's name because you finished a course on its website.

What does a finished entry look like?

A finished resume entry has a title line with the role from the offer letter, the organisation, the place and the start and end months, then three bullets that each open with a verb and carry a number. The LinkedIn version repeats the same facts in the Add experience window, with the same dates and role as your certificate.

The table below is a SPECIMEN: an example intern experience resume entry, followed by the same internship written for LinkedIn. All names, figures and dates sit in square brackets as placeholders. It describes no real organisation or person and cannot be used as a record of any internship.

The fields in LinkedIn's Add experience window may be labelled differently from the rows above. Put the same facts in them, and make the dates and role match your certificate exactly.

How will a college or employer check the entry?

Against your papers. At IIT Madras students upload resumes to a portal for verification with links to their proofs, and the guidelines warn that a team cannot verify a proof whose link is not set so that "anyone with the link can view" it. An employer can do the same with a phone call or an email to the organisation, asking whether you worked there, in what role and between which dates.

The certificate is worth no more than the work behind it, and the same holds for a free internship certificate found online. If an interviewer asks how you did the work in bullet two, the answer has to come from you; the certificate cannot give it. Write your own lines. IIT Madras's resume archive guidance advises students "not to copy any points from any of the resumes as it will be evident to the recruiter". Borrowed bullets are also the ones you cannot explain in an interview. Harvard's guide allows generative AI to help brainstorm revisions or work in keywords from a job description, and says it should not be the primary author.

Ask your supervisor before you leave whether they will confirm your role if a college or employer calls. MIT's advice is to line up references but not to put them on the resume unless asked.

A LinkedIn recommendation from that supervisor is a written commendation of your work that can sit on your profile. LinkedIn's help pages say you can request one from a 1st-degree connection you work with or have worked with: open their profile, click the More icon, then Request a recommendation, giving your relationship and your position at the time. You can request only one recommendation per position, per member, and an accepted one is visible to your network by default.
