Free internship certificate online: why a genuine one takes work

Can you get a free internship certificate online?

AICTE, the All India Council for Technical Education, runs a National Internship Portal whose home page lists four stages that cost a student ₹0: registration, applications, shortlisting and the completion certificate. The portal says it is funded by AICTE under the Ministry of Education, and it has a section for remote and hybrid internships.

The certificate is free there because the internship is. UGC's 2023 internship guidelines for undergraduate students tie the completion certificate to the end of the internship and to the people who watched it: a supervisor named by the college and a mentor who checks the work. Where a student cannot find a physical placement, they add, the host institute should provide for a digital or group internship, so online work is an accepted route.

The way to get a free internship certificate is to finish a free internship where someone sets and checks the work. A certificate is worth only the work that produced it. Where there was no work, no supervisor and no record, a free certificate is paper with your name on it.

What does a genuine internship certificate need behind it?

It needs a host that set the work, a named person there who checked it, fixed dates, and records that agree with the certificate. The University Grants Commission (UGC) 2023 guidelines have the mentor check and validate the student's performance every fortnight and issue the certificate or report after the internship. The AICTE Internship Policy has students obtain the training certificate from industry at Step 6 and asks for a diary the supervisor signs every day.

Put together, the paper trail behind a genuine certificate looks like this:

• an offer or confirmation from the host, sent before the work began;
• a diary or log of what you did, dated, and signed where your course asks for it;
• work you handed in, with the supervisor's comments on it;
• an evaluation from the host, which the AICTE policy wants signed and stamped;
• the certificate itself, dated after the last day (see the internship completion certificate guide).

The specimen below shows how those facts sit on a certificate from an online internship. All of its details are bracketed placeholders, and the SPECIMEN label at each end stops anyone passing it off as real.

Is a free internship certificate PDF download safe to use?

No, not as a certificate. A template is safe to look at for layout; filling one in with an organisation's name and a signature it never gave you, so that others take it as theirs, is making a false document under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Section 335 covers anyone who dishonestly or fraudulently makes or signs a document intending it to be believed that it was made or signed by, or with the authority of, someone who did not make it.

The Sanhita's own illustration (k) under that section could have been written for this search. A writes a letter without B's authority, signs it in B's name certifying A's character, and uses it to try to get a job with Z. The statute's verdict is that "A has committed forgery".

Section 336(2) sets the punishment for forgery at imprisonment "which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both", and section 336(3) raises the ceiling to seven years where the forged document is meant to be used for cheating. Section 340(2) punishes a person who knowingly uses a forged document as genuine as if they had forged it.

So an internship certificate pdf free download is fine as a picture of where fields go. The moment it carries a host's name and goes to a college or an employer, it stops being a template.

Online certificate generators, which turn your details into a finished Word file or PDF, change nothing here. Typing a host's name into one, without that host's authority, and presenting the result as the host's is the step section 335 describes, and sending the result to a college is the use section 340(2) covers.

Which free routes end in a certificate, judged on the same criteria?

The AICTE National Internship Portal, the NPTEL internship and the NITI Aayog internship each issue a certificate at the end of supervised work, and job simulation sites such as Forage issue one for a finished simulation that nobody supervises. Judge each on who assigns and reviews the work, the cost to you, what the certificate records, who may apply and whether it builds skills in your own subject.

• The AICTE National Internship Portal. Hosts from ministries and PSUs to companies post internships there, including remote and hybrid ones, and the host sets the work. The portal says students pay ₹0, certificate included, and that its certificate is government-issued and QR-verifiable. It says it is open to students under AICTE, UGC and IGNOU, among others, and whether you qualify for a given post depends on that post. Subject skills depend on which role you choose.
• The NPTEL internship. A course instructor at an IIT, IISc, IISER, IIIT or another course-offering institute supervises the intern and does the selecting. Only course toppers and Elite-Gold certification passers may apply, students are taken for in-person internships only, and the in-person internship carries a stipend. The page shows a sample certificate and names no fee. The work is research with the faculty who teach the course.
• The Science Academies Summer Research Fellowship. Three national science academies place a student with a scientist for two months, in person, with return train fare and a monthly fellowship for living costs. Only listed courses and years may apply, with an average of 65% or above in core subjects from Class X onward. The 2027 announcement and instructions describe no certificate and mention no fee.
• The NITI Aayog internship. The NITI Internship Scheme order of 22 November 2018, posted on NITI's website, makes it unpaid. Interns supplement NITI Aayog's work with empirical analysis and briefing reports, and the division's Adviser issues the certificate; anyone who does not complete the period of six weeks to six months gets none. Interns bring their own laptops to the working space NITI provides. Undergraduates may apply after their second year with 85% or more in Class 12. The order names no fee.
• A job simulation on a course site such as Forage. Its home page says the simulations cost nothing, are open to anyone and are self-paced; a user completes tasks that copy a company's work, checks them against model answers and earns a certificate. Anyone can enrol and nobody supervises you, so the certificate records a finished simulation.
• Pledge A Smile Foundation (the publisher of this guide) runs an online internship that is open to students of any stream and free to apply to and to do. Interns own a weekly target, send a weekly report and get feedback on it. There is a performance-based stipend and a certificate on completion. It does not teach subject-specific technical skills.

NPTEL, the Science Academies fellowship and NITI Aayog are in person and selective. Among the routes you can take from home, the difference that matters for a certificate is whether a named person checked your work.

The PM Internship Scheme also ends in a completion certificate, issued by the company. The Ministry of Corporate Affairs widened the scheme this year: a PIB release dated 22 April 2026 sets assistance at no less than ₹9,000 monthly, opens it to anyone from 18 to 25, and admits students in the final year of a degree or master's who bring a No Objection Certificate from their institution.

Its FAQ page still carries the first pilot's terms: ₹5,000 a month, applicants aged 21 to 24, one year of internship and no full-time students. Check the portal, pminternship.mca.gov.in, for the terms in force before you apply.

Which free internships with a certificate suit CSE students?

For a free internship certificate for CSE students, the NPTEL internship puts you under a course instructor, on the eligibility terms listed above. Its stipend, revised from Summer Internship 2025, runs from Rs. 7500 for 2 weeks to Rs. 45,000 for 12 weeks, paid on successful completion. The virtual internship, offered where feasible to faculty who cannot take leave and to candidates with disabilities, carries no stipend.

The Science Academies fellowship takes BE, BTech and BCA students in their second and third years only. Applications for 2027 close on 30 November 2026, according to the announcement dated 10 September 2026, and students give a teacher's contact so the Academy can ask for a recommendation letter.

From home, the National Internship Portal's remote listings are where a host sets the work, and applying there means writing to hosts; a first-time applicant can start from the cover letter for an internship with no experience. Forage lists "Software Engineering Job Simulations" as a category, on the unsupervised terms described above. Why does a "free" internship ask you to pay for the certificate?

When a free internship charges at the end, the certificate is the thing on sale. In a genuine free internship with certificate, the certificate comes with the work at no charge, and the National Internship Portal warns that a website, agent or self-styled consultant who wants money for applying through the portal is running "a scam", which it asks students to report to [email protected].

Listing platforms set similar rules for the hosts they carry. Internshala's terms bar training programmes that expect applicants to put down a security deposit or an admission fee, and they prohibit charging applicants anything for a job, test and documentation fees included.

A government portal shows the same split in the open. The Skill India Digital Hub internship page lets you filter its listings by "Internship Fee", with Free and Paid as the two options, and tags listings Paid. Read that field before you enrol anywhere. Where a page does not say what the certificate costs, ask the host by email and keep the reply, since a hidden charge is easier to refuse before the work starts.

How is the certificate you bring checked by a college or employer?

A college checks it against the evidence it already holds, and an employer checks it with the signatory. Under the AICTE policy the host rates punctuality, eagerness to learn, diary-keeping and a skill test; a faculty member visits the site; and at the institute's seminar the attendance record and diary are read alongside the report.

The UGC guidelines send the intern to a two-member committee with one internal member and one external. Its suggested aspects open with the intern's activity logbook and the internship supervisor's evaluation, and close with attendance. A downloaded certificate has no logbook, no evaluation and no supervisor for that committee to question. Employers have less paper, so they ask the source. A National Internship Portal certificate carries a QR code that, the portal says, opens its own verification page with the issuing ministry, organisation and period.
