Social media internship: what the work is and how to get one

Looking for an internship? Apply to Pledge A Smile Foundation

Short answer

A social media internship is a supervised, junior share of a brand's social media work: planning posts, writing captions, posting, answering comments and reporting numbers to the account holder. On 25 September 2026, 9 of 60 first-page Internshala social media marketing listings had Business Development or Lead Generation titles, so read the numbered duties before applying.

What does "social media intern" mean?

The Media and Entertainment Skills Council's qualification pack for a Social Media Executive (MES/Q0702, version 3.0, NSQF Level 4) says a person in the job will "handle all the social media activities" for a company or several clients "in order to create brand awareness". So the plain social media intern meaning is a supervised, junior share of that job, done on accounts that belong to someone else.

The same pack spells out the job as ideating, coordinating and executing campaigns, promotions and advertisements, with "regular posting, sharing and updating" across the major networks.

It sets the full job's minimum at Class 12 plus a year of experience, or an ITI course plus a year. The curriculum for the role on the National Qualifications Register, written against version 2.0 of the pack, runs 540 hours, 60 of them on the job.

Those numbers describe a trained executive. Read them as a map of the work, and read each listing's own requirements as the bar for the internship. Social media is one corner of a wider family; research, campaigns and sales roles are covered under marketing internship duties.

What does a social media intern do day to day?

Plan, post, reply and report. The pack's unit on creating a work flow (MES/N0707) opens with drawing up a daily work plan that follows the organisation's social media strategy, then asks the worker to "seed content into social networks". It then asks for the metrics that matter to be fixed: reach, clicks, engagement and hashtag performance.

The unit on online tools (MES/N0709) adds weekly and monthly metrics reports for senior management.

Performance criterion in the packA likely intern version
make daily work plan as per social media strategy of the organizationFilling in next week's rows on the content calendar and getting them approved
seed content into social networksDrafting captions, then scheduling posts, reels and carousels once they are signed off
manage graphic designers for generating online graphical posts / infographicsMaking simple post graphics yourself from a brand template
track and report metrics around social posts and fan engagementA Friday sheet of reach, saves, shares and comments per post

A listing's job description puts the same social media intern duties in plainer words. One remote listing on Internshala's work-from-home social media page, opened on 25 September 2026, set out ten duties: writing hooks and captions, cutting raw footage into short videos, helping with the content calendar, answering comments and DMs, and tracking views, reach, shares and saves. It also asked for occasional weekend activity.

Which "social media" listings are really lead generation or sales?

A listing is sales work when its duties are generating leads, calling, pitching or closing a monthly number of brands, whatever category it sits in. On 25 September 2026, Internshala's social media marketing category showed 2,077 internships, and 9 of the 60 on its first page had Business Development or Lead Generation in the title. Three more were outreach roles and one was a campus ambassador role.

The duty lists make the difference plain. A remote lead generation listing asked the intern to "Generate new leads through social media, email, calling, networking, referrals, and other marketing platforms" and to keep a database of them. An influencer marketing listing that sat on both first pages asked for pitches to brands by LinkedIn, email and calls, and for two to three brands closed each month "in line with company targets".

Internshala's own complaint form for students lists "Promotional/sales work given as assignment" and "Different work profile offered" among the problems a student can report.

If a listing's duties are calls, pitches and a monthly closing number, apply to it as a sales internship, and ask in writing what the target is and whether any part of the pay depends on meeting it.

What skills and tools should you have before you apply?

Clear writing and the habit of counting results. The MESC Social Media Executive pack's personal attributes ask for "good written and oral communication skills" and for analytical and quantitative skills "to be able to interpret and analyze the campaign results". Its knowledge list for the work-flow unit names writing and editing, designing and photo editing, and "applicable copyright norms and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)".

The first page of Internshala's category, read on 25 September 2026, points the same way. Of its 60 listings, 22 mentioned English proficiency and 26 mentioned Instagram, while 17 mentioned LinkedIn. The pack asks the executive to identify which audience is on which platform, so read which network each listing names before you build samples for it.

Meta's help centre says Meta Business Suite lets you create and schedule posts for Facebook and Instagram, and view insights on how each post performed. Its Active times option suggests slots based on when followers were most active over the past 7 days, which is the kind of number a weekly report can quote.

You do not need the whole trade to start: the pack has the executive managing graphic designers for posts and infographics. An application with three written posts, one simple graphic and one number you tracked shows the writing and the counting the pack puts first. If writing is the part you enjoy most, the guide to content writing internships for beginners covers that route.

Can you do a social media internship from home?

Yes. Internshala's page for social media internship work from home roles showed 640 internships on 25 September 2026, and its first page carried 51: 35 quoted a monthly stipend, 7 said Performance Based, 5 said Unpaid and 4 gave a lump sum. All seven Performance Based listings were campus ambassador roles, and 32 of the 51 were marked Part time.

Remote pay ran lower on that day's snapshot. Among first-page listings quoting a monthly figure, the middle value of the lower end was ₹5,000 on the work-from-home page and ₹10,000 on the main category page. One lump sum covered 1 Week, so compare the unit and the duration together before you compare the amount.

Internshala's help centre describes a work-from-home internship as one where the employer sends the work by email or messaging apps with a date for submission, and you choose your hours unless asked to work specific ones.

Office roles can be full-time. A Delhi listing from The Caravan magazine for its Hindi magazine, with a deadline of 3 November 2024, set the social media internship at 11 am to 7 pm, Monday to Saturday. Check the hours line as closely as the stipend line.

Before you accept a social media intern work from home offer, ask who approves each post before it goes out and how you will be given access to the accounts. If you will be a social media intern remote from the team, ask for access through the platform's own page roles rather than a shared password. The guide to home-based internships for students covers hours and supervision in more depth.

What rules apply when you post for a brand?

An intern posting for a brand answers to the advertising code on disclosure, copyright norms and the brand's rules on confidential information. The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) Guidelines for Influencer Advertising in Digital Media count "any family or employment relationship" as a material connection, and a material connection means a post needs a disclosure label. Employee is one of the labels ASCI permits.

ASCI defines an influencer as anyone with access to an audience and the power to affect its purchasing decisions or opinions, and its list of material connections is "not limited to" the items it names, so an internship is safest treated as one. If you post about the brand you intern for from your own profile, put a label on the post.

ASCI says a label is likely to be missed if it appears only in a bio, at the end of a post or behind a click on MORE, and it should not be buried in a group of hashtags. On a story with no text, the label goes over the picture.

Some internships put you on the other side of that rule, finding influencers for the brand. ASCI makes the advertiser and the influencer both responsible for the disclosure, and says the advertiser should ask the influencer to edit or delete a post that breaks the code. Its 2023 addendum requires finance and health influencers to state their qualifications, with a SEBI registration number for advice on stocks or investments.

ASCI was formed in 1985 by professionals from the advertising and media industry, according to its about page, and its explainer on self-regulation says self-regulatory standards provide "an additional layer of consumer protection that complements the legal framework".

The qualification pack lists copyright norms and intellectual property in three of its units (MES/N0707, N0708 and N0711), and its unit on implementing strategy includes the organisation's procedures "for dealing with confidential information". Before you use a song, a meme or a photo found online on a brand's page, ask whether the brand has the right to use it. Keep unreleased offers and figures off your own feed.

What can a social media internship lead to?

The national skills framework puts the work on a ladder of levels. The Social Media Executive pack sits at NSQF Level 4. The Digital Marketing Manager qualification file (2022/ME/MESC/05446) is Level 6, and one of its entry routes is Social Media Manager at Level 5 with two years of relevant experience.

Writing-heavy work has a higher pack of its own. MESC's pack for a Content Strategist (MES/Q2506, NSQF Level 5) lists a graduate with 2 years of experience among its entry options, and describes the job as building a content strategy from a client's business objectives and the end user's needs.

Which route to a social media internship fits you?

Use your placement cell if you need college credit, a listing platform if you want the widest choice, a direct approach to a small business if you want to work beside the account holder, and a non-profit's own programme if you want to do the work for a cause. No route should ask you for a fee; how internship fee scams work sets out the patterns.

The four routes are judged here on five criteria: any fee to apply, whether it can count for college credit, who holds the account and supervises you, whether it teaches subject-specific technical skills, and how pay is set.

  • Your college placement cell. The UGC's internship guidelines have your institution name a supervisor who keeps track of your regularity and sees that a completion certificate follows, which makes credit simpler to settle. The host brand holds the account, and skills and pay depend on it. It loses on choice: you get the roles its recruiters bring that term.
  • A listing platform such as Internshala, whose help centre describes it as "a free platform" for applicants. The employer holds the account and supervises; ask your department about credit before you start. It loses on pay structure and role clarity, since sales jobs and unpaid posts sit under the same label.
  • Writing straight to a small business or a small agency whose feed you follow. There is no fee and you work next to the person who holds the account, so you may learn more of the job. Ask your department about credit before the first day. It loses on protection: no platform stands behind the offer, so ask for the duties and any pay in writing.
  • Going to a charity that runs its own internship scheme. Pledge A Smile Foundation (the publisher of this guide) runs an online internship that is open to students of any stream and free to apply to and to do. Interns own a weekly target, send a weekly report and get feedback on it. There is a performance-based stipend and a certificate on completion. It does not teach subject-specific technical skills.

Doing the same work for a cause rather than a brand has its own set-up, covered in how non-profits run digital marketing internships.

How do you get a social media internship with no experience?

A fresher can show proof of the work by running one small account properly for four weeks and reporting on it. The pack's strategy unit (MES/N0711) asks the executive to set S.M.A.R.T. goals and to "set up accounts and improve existing profiles". A month of that on a real account, with numbers, gives you a work sample to attach.

  1. Find an account that has an owner who says yes: a college society, a family shop, a teacher's coaching page. Never create an account in a business's name without its owner's permission.
  2. Write one measurable goal with a date, such as 20 enquiries by the end of the month.
  3. Fix the profile first: the bio, the contact button, the highlights and one pinned post.
  4. Post from a written calendar and note reach, saves and comments for every post.
  5. Send the owner a one-page report each week, as the pack's metrics unit expects of a professional.
  6. Apply only to listings whose duties match what you did, and attach the last report. Some employers ask for more: The Caravan's 2024 listing wanted a cover letter, a CV, a writing sample and two references.

Common questions
Is a social media internship paid?

Most first-page listings named an amount. Of the 60 on Internshala's social media marketing page on 25 September 2026, 55 quoted a monthly stipend, 2 said Unpaid, 2 gave a lump sum and 1 was Performance Based. The most frequent range was ₹ 10,000 - 12,000 /month, on 6 listings. These are live counts and change daily.

Do I need to know graphic design for a social media internship?

Basic design helps, but the job standard does not make you a designer. The Media and Entertainment Skills Council's Social Media Executive pack (MES/Q0702) lists designing and photo editing as knowledge, and asks the executive to manage graphic designers. On 25 September 2026, 13 of the 60 first-page Internshala social media marketing listings named Canva, so a few simple graphics made in it are worth showing.

Should a social media intern be given the account password?

Ask for access through the platform instead. On Facebook, a Page owner can give task access, which lets a person manage the Page from tools such as Meta Business Suite or Ads Manager without switching into the Page. The Facebook Help Center page on Page access notes that full control lets a person remove anyone, including the owner, or delete the Page. That page covers Facebook Pages only.

How long does a social media internship last?

Most first-page listings ran three or six months. On 25 September 2026, 26 of the 60 on Internshala's social media marketing page said 6 Months and 18 said 3 Months, with the shortest at 1 Week. Remote roles ran shorter: 17 of 51 first-page work-from-home listings said 1 Month.

Does a social media internship count for college credit?

It can, if your department approves it before you start. The University Grants Commission's internship guidelines for undergraduates make a 60 to 120 hour internship after the 4th semester mandatory for UG degree students and count one credit as two hours a week, or 30 hours over a 15-week semester. How each university applies this varies, so ask first.

Is a social media internship the same as being an influencer?

No. The Advertising Standards Council of India defines an influencer as someone with an audience and the power to affect its buying decisions or opinions. An intern works on the brand's side; the Media and Entertainment Skills Council's job standard lists managing blogger and influencer outreach among the executive's tasks. On 25 September 2026, 4 of 60 first-page Internshala social media marketing listings had Influencer Marketing titles.
