Internship for sociology students: fieldwork, research and government routes

What does a sociology intern actually do?

Savitribai Phule Pune University's MA sociology syllabus lists the tasks in its NEP structure for Semester II, in force from 2023-24. Under on-job training and field projects it names "Survey, Interview, Social media Posts, Writing Essays and Reports".

A government host adds policy to that. The women and child development ministry's internship guidelines say interns "may be required to undertake pilot projects/micro-studies" on the Ministry's ongoing activities, and can feed policy through "empirical analysis, reporting, policy papers and briefing".

A college placement looks different again. Bangalore University's sociology board, in guidelines it accepted in March 2024, asks colleges to match each student to an organisation, with "a mix of rural and urban placements" across the batch, and the report it asks for has a chapter describing the study area and one on experiential learning.

Does your BA sociology course already require an internship?

Yes, if your university follows the University Grants Commission's framework. Under the UGC's 2023 Guidelines for Internship/Research Internship for Under Graduate Students, students enrolled in UG degree programmes owe an internship of between 60 and 120 hours, taken after the fourth semester. One credit there means two hours of engagement each week.

Universities turn that into their own rule. Bangalore University's guidelines for 6th semester BA Sociology students set 90 hours, done full-time during the semester over four to six weeks, or part-time during the academic session over eight to twelve weeks. That is one university's rule for one semester; read your own university's syllabus for yours.

The same Bangalore guidelines put the college in charge of the placement. It finds the organisation, issues a request letter on its letterhead with the college head's signature, and assigns a teacher as mentor. Where your university has a rule like this, ask your department before you look at any listing board.

What changes for MA sociology students?

Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University's MA Sociology syllabus for Semesters III and IV (session 2024-25) offers 4 credits "for 120 Hours" of on-job training or field projects and requires at least 2, with "Minimum 60 Hours OJT/FP is mandatory". At master's level NITI Aayog applies a different marks test, and some research institutes take postgraduates only.

The same document lists Field Work at 120 hours in its Semester III table and again at 120 hours in its Semester IV table. The credit table and the semester tables can be read two ways, so ask the department which figure it will grade you on.

NITI Aayog's internship order accepts postgraduates who have completed or appeared in their first-year or second-semester exams, with at least 70% in graduation; the class 12 condition is for undergraduates. For how other MA streams handle this, see the guide on internships for MA students.

One paid internship for MA sociology students sits outside the syllabus. The Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC) in Bengaluru, a social science research institute, took master's students between their second and third semesters for its 2026 internship in social sciences: two months full-time between May and August, offline, at "Rs. 5,000/- per month for two months, based on diligence and deliverables".

ISEC gave free accommodation (food excluded) and a non-AC sleeper train fare only to interns from outside Bengaluru. Applications went by post with two recommendation letters, from the head of department and a senior faculty member, and the 2026 round closed on 21 April 2026.

Which government internships take sociology students?

A government internship for sociology students comes from NITI Aayog, the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD), the National Centre for Good Governance (NCGG) or the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment. Of these, only the Social Justice department's order, titled Scheme for internship for UG/PG/Research Students, names Sociology, first among its subjects, from undergraduates to research scholars, for up to six months. NITI Aayog and MWCD take students whose work fits sociology, and NCGG names no subject.

The Social Justice scheme is an undated three-page order. Rounds open when the department issues an "Advertisement/Circular". The application is a plain-paper letter listing three areas of the department's work that interest you, backed by a recommendation from your principal, head of department or supervisor. Its objective clause speaks of "Post Graduate students/Research Fellows" alone, though the applicability clause admits undergraduates as well.

NITI's internship scheme order, dated November 2018, does not list sociology as a domain, but its 26 domains include Social justice and empowerment, Programme Monitoring and Evaluation, and Health, Nutrition, Women and Child Development.

At NITI Aayog an undergraduate can apply once the second-year or fourth-semester exams are done, with at least 85% in class 12. The internship runs from six weeks up to six months.

MWCD's programme has a narrower door. It is open to women only, aged 21 to 40, whether students, scholars, teachers or social activists, linked to some institution, from rural India or from a city outside tier I. The criteria page on its portal shuts out eight tier-I cities by name: Pune, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad.

MWCD runs two-month batches and takes up to 20 interns a batch. Its internship page ties each application window to a batch two months later: 1 to 10 March for May to June, 1 to 10 June for August to September, 1 to 10 September for November to December, and 1 to 10 December for February to March. A candidate selected once cannot apply again.

Check your exam timetable against the batch. The same page allows no leave during the internship except on medical grounds or for unavoidable circumstances, and says those circumstances do not include leave to sit any examination.

NCGG, an autonomous institution under the personnel ministry that also works as a think tank for the Government of India, takes students near the end of a degree or past it. Its internship scheme admits graduates, postgraduate students, final-year students interning for a curriculum dissertation or capstone project, and new graduates still waiting for their degree certificates, if they are 30 or younger. Placements run 8 weeks to 6 months in Delhi or Mussoorie, and its form is open in each month's first week.

Are any sociology internships paid?

Yes. A paid internship for sociology students comes from five hosts that print a monthly figure: MWCD at ₹20,000, the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) at ₹15,000 for recent graduates and ₹25,000 after a master's, NCGG and the Social Justice department at ₹10,000 each, and ISEC at ₹5,000 for master's students. The ICSSR and ISEC figures come from rounds that have closed, and MWCD's stipend is limited to women aged 21 to 40 who are not from tier-I cities.

MWCD's guidelines pay what they call a lump sum of "Rs. 20,000/- per month", refund the bus or train fare (AC or deluxe bus, or a 3-tier AC berth) for the journey in and the journey home, and award a certificate on completion subject to terms such as submitting or presenting papers or reports.

NITI Aayog's order says its internship will be "on unpaid basis", whatever the domain.

The Social Justice order sets no gender, age or city rule; only Indian nationals may apply. Its "stipend of Rs. 10,000/- per month" is "payable at the end of the period of internship", and travel costs are not reimbursed, so plan for the months before it arrives.

DCPCR, the Delhi government's child rights commission, pays full-time interns what its internships page calls "a modest stipend", with official travel reimbursed, and prints no figure. NCGG calls its ₹10,000 "a consolidated honorarium", and interns arrange their own travel, lodging and boarding. Outside government, pay is whatever the host sets; ask for it in writing before you begin.

Which research institutes offer an internship for sociology students in India?

Four social science bodies publish internships open to sociology students: the Indian Social Institute in New Delhi, the Lokniti programme at CSDS (the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies), ICSSR, whose Junior Internship is for recent graduates, and CSES in Kochi, for postgraduates who know Malayalam. The Indian Social Institute's internship page names sociology among each year's intern disciplines, alongside law and social work, encourages a stay of at least a month, and takes applications by email.

Lokniti's one-month internship takes undergraduates, postgraduates and research scholars with an interest in the social sciences. Interns help on current projects with research, data collection and the reading of that data, and the page promises insight into election studies.

After graduation, the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), under the Ministry of Education, ran a Junior Internship in 2025-26: 20 places, three months, "15,000/- P.M (Fixed)", offline in New Delhi for 40 hours a week. It asked for a bachelor's degree in the social sciences or humanities with 55%, completed in 2024 or later, and no current full-time postgraduate enrolment. That round closed on 18 August 2025.

The same 2025-26 advertisement offered 20 Senior Internships to holders of a master's degree with 55% in the social sciences or humanities: six months at "25,000/- P.M (Fixed)". Its limited residential accommodation was for female candidates only, twin-sharing.

In Kochi, CSES (the Centre for Socio-economic and Environmental Studies) takes interns who are studying for a postgraduate degree or PhD, or have recently finished a postgraduate degree, in sociology or another social science, and says knowledge of Malayalam is essential. Its internship programme page says interns join ongoing research projects, gain experience of fieldwork and prepare research reports.

Can a sociology internship be done online?

Not at the institutes and ministries that say how their interns work. ISEC ran its 2026 internship offline only, ICSSR's 2025-26 interns worked offline in New Delhi, MWCD gives interns hostel places in Delhi and seating in the Ministry, and NITI Aayog wants 75% attendance, logged in and out daily.

An online internship for sociology students does exist in the nearest category on listing boards. On 25 September 2026, Internshala's page for work-from-home social work internships showed about 50 listings. Counts on a board change daily, and each employer sets its own pay. Internshala's own safety page treats a request for application fees, deposits or training charges as a red flag; walk away from any of them.

The UGC's own guidelines leave room for it. The 2023 document names "Hybrid model learning" among internship objectives, mixing in-person and digital learning. How do the routes compare for a sociology student?

Judge each route on five points: whether it counts toward your course hours, whether it pays, the year you can apply, whether it needs you on site, and whether it trains sociology skills such as surveys, interviewing and writing a field report. A college placement wins on course hours and field method and loses on choice, so start there and add another route for pay or remote work.

Before any placement with an NGO, read which agencies a college accepts.

• A fieldwork placement arranged by your college. It counts toward course hours by design, and at Bangalore University it comes with a request letter and a teacher mentor. It sits in the semester the syllabus names, the sixth there. It is mostly in person, rural or urban, and it trains the field methods a sociology report is built on. Pay depends on the host.
• A government scheme: NITI Aayog, MWCD or the Social Justice department. NITI takes undergraduates after the fourth semester and is unpaid; MWCD pays ₹20,000 a month, to women only, 21 to 40, none from tier-I cities. The Social Justice scheme names sociology and pays ₹10,000 a month at the end, when it advertises. NITI and MWCD are in person, and the Social Justice order provides office space with a computer. They train policy analysis and reporting. Whether the hours count is your department's call.
• A faculty research project. The UGC's framework provides for training in labs with faculty and researchers, in your own or another institution, during the summer term, and the 2023 guidelines suggest projects on the effectiveness of schemes run by government and by non-government bodies. It trains research method directly; neither document mentions pay, and it depends on a teacher willing to supervise you.
• An online listing on a board such as Internshala. Each listing sets its own eligibility and pay, and many can be done from home. Subject skills depend entirely on the role, and course credit depends on your department approving the host before you begin. Check every employer yourself before accepting.
• Direct application to a non-profit, outside college. Pledge A Smile Foundation (the publisher of this guide) runs an online internship that is open to students of any stream and free to apply to and to do. Interns own a weekly target, send a weekly report and get feedback on it. There is a performance-based stipend and a certificate on completion. It does not teach subject-specific technical skills.

What goes into the report your department will grade?

Your university sets it. Bangalore University's guidelines for 6th semester BA Sociology ask for four chapters in 25 to 40 pages: "CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION", "CHAPTER II: DESCRIPTION OF THE STUDY AREA", "CHAPTER III: EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING" and "CHAPTER IV: INTERNSHIP OUTCOMES AND CONCLUSION", with an internship certificate where one applies, all due by the end of that semester.

The format is fixed too. Students submit three soft-bound copies (for the student, the college and the university) on A4 paper printed on both sides, in Times New Roman 12 for text, 12 bold for subheadings and 14 bold for headings, with 1.5 line spacing, justified text and page numbers. The report can be in English or Kannada.

Government hosts ask for writing as well. NITI Aayog's interns submit "a brief report/paper" at the end about their learning experience, and MWCD awards its certificate on terms such as submitting or presenting papers or reports. How do you apply with no experience?

Through your college first, then through the government windows. Under Bangalore University's rule the college issues a request letter signed by its head, so ask your department for one before you approach any organisation. NITI Aayog and MWCD both take applications online, and only during a month's opening ten days.

1. Pick a host whose work is close to your syllabus: a women's or child rights group, a survey-based research unit, a local body. Check an NGO before you commit; see how to check the NGO.
2. Note the government windows. NITI Aayog takes applications between six and two months before your start month, once a financial year. MWCD's windows open on the 1st to 10th of March, June, September and December, two months before each batch.
3. Get your college's NOC ready for NITI Aayog. Selected interns produce it with their original mark sheets at joining, and it must say you are not registered for any course needing class attendance during the internship.
4. Offer a small piece of fieldwork as your sample: a short survey of ten households, or a written summary of one government scheme in your district, done from public documents.

MWCD selects through a committee that may include faculty or subject experts from universities and research institutes.
