Online internships for arts and humanities students

How many arts students are there, and does anyone mandate an internship for them?

AISHE 2023-24, the annual enrolment survey published by the Ministry of Education, puts B.A. enrolment, counting B.A. Honours, at 1.3 crore students, 38.6% of all undergraduate enrolment in India and the single largest undergraduate programme by name. Counted by discipline rather than by degree title, Arts still leads at 1.1 crore students, ahead of Science at 45.7 lakh, Engineering and Technology at 43.9 lakh and Commerce at 40.8 lakh.

One national rule does exist, and it is a credit rule rather than a placement one. Under the Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes, which is the UGC's template for a degree, summer internship carries 2 to 4 credits within the minimum credit structure, and a credit of internship there is defined as two hours of engagement each week, which works out to 30 hours over a 15 week semester.

Whether any of that reaches your own B.A. turns on your university having adopted that framework, and nothing in the document obliges anyone to go and find the internship for you. If your placement cell is built around campus recruiters, ask whether it has any contact with a publishing house or a research desk before you wait on it. If it does not, write to organisations directly, and treat a remote role as the easier thing to ask for, since it costs the organisation no desk space.

The same survey counts 53.9% of Arts discipline students as women, a higher share than Commerce at 48.0% or Engineering and Technology at 31.1%, with Science close behind Arts at 53.4%. Remote work needs no travel and no relocation, which takes two of the usual objections at home off the table.

The sub-stream matches that follow are drawn from what each syllabus already trains for, not from a rule any listing board publishes. Treat them as a starting point for the search terms you use, not a fixed category a listing will name.

What can a literature or language student do?

Content and translation work is where a literature or language background fits most directly. Reading a source text and producing a clean draft in English or a regional language is close to what an honours syllabus already trains for. Editorial assistance, proofreading, subtitling, and website or newsletter copy for small organisations are the common remote tasks, and none of them need software beyond a word processor and, sometimes, a glossary the organisation supplies.

A first internship in this line is usually short pieces first: a product description, one section of a newsletter, a caption set. Ask at the start what length and turnaround the organisation expects, because a brief you did not pin down is harder to satisfy than a draft you can simply rewrite.

If you can produce a clean draft in Hindi, Tamil, Bengali or another Indian language as well as in English, put that in the first line of your application rather than leaving it to be inferred from your name or your college. It narrows the pool you are being compared against, and an organisation looking for regional-language copy will otherwise never find it out.

What can a history or political science student do?

Research and archiving work maps closely onto a history or political science syllabus: reading primary and secondary sources, building a timeline or an annotated bibliography, summarising a policy document, or coding open-ended survey answers into a spreadsheet. These are desk tasks. They do not need a physical archive, a field visit or an office, only a clear research question and a citation style to follow, which the supervisor should give you in the first week.

Think tanks and policy desks also take political science students for election-cycle tracking and summary work. Expect that to be reading and writing up what you read; if a listing implies field data collection, ask how it is supervised before you accept.

An early assignment here may be a literature review of five to ten sources on a narrow question, submitted as a short memo with citations. Get the citation format right the first time, because a supervisor correcting formatting on every submission has less room to hand you the more interesting work later on.

What can a fine arts or design student do?

Design work turns on a portfolio in a way the writing and research routes do not. A poster, a set of social templates, an illustration brief, or basic layout for a report are typical remote assignments. If a listing asks to see two or three finished pieces before it offers anything, you want coursework already saved and presentable, even work that was never meant to be shown outside class.

A small organisation may well be working in free or low-cost tools, Canva, GIMP, occasionally a shared Figma file, rather than the licensed software a fine arts department teaches on. A sample made in a free tool costs you nothing if the layout and colour sense hold up.

Match the sample to the brief. A portfolio of personal, expressive work does not answer a request for utility design, where a clean, legible poster reads better to an organisation than an ambitious painting. Ask what the piece is for before you choose which sample to lead with.

What about economics, sociology or psychology within a B.A.?

A B.A. in economics or sociology sits between the research route and the commerce route. Economics students get pulled into data cleaning, chart-building and short explainer writing for policy desks and research firms. Sociology students are wanted for the same archiving and coding tasks as history students, applied to survey data instead of documents.

Where do arts graduates sit in the employability numbers?

Wheebox's India Skills Report 2026, acknowledging AICTE, CII and AIU, draws on a Global Employability Test sat by over one lakh candidates and counts a candidate scoring above 60% as employable. Arts graduates land at 55.55% for 2026, under the 56.35% national employability rate the report gives across all test takers.

Science sits at 61%, commerce at 62.81%, pharmacy at 58%, MCA at 68.25%, engineering at 70.15% and MBA at 72.76%, which makes arts the lowest of the degree qualifications in that list, while the two non-degree routes it scores, ITI at 45.95% and polytechnic diplomas at 32.92%, come in below arts.

What an internship can do is give an interviewer something to ask about beyond the syllabus. A B.A. resume with no work history leaves a recruiter nothing to test except marks, while one carrying a finished translation project, a research note or three published social templates hands them a specific question to put to you.

What do employers check for, and does an arts degree show it?

Work they can see you do. How much weight employers put on evaluated work experience next to a university degree requirement is survey territory, the survey numbers on it sit in the guide on experience against degrees and certificates.

An arts syllabus built on argument, close reading and structured writing is training nobody can see from the outside. An internship is where it turns into something you can point at: a brief you handled, a piece you finished on a deadline someone else set, rather than a line on a resume.

How should you describe an arts internship on a resume?

Name the organisation type, the task, and a number: "wrote and edited 14 newsletter sections for a policy research organisation" reads better than "content writing internship", because it gives an interviewer something concrete to ask about. Your interviewer has only the line in front of them to work from, so how you word the work matters more than the internship's title or the size of the organisation.

Keep the description to what you did. A one-line internship padded into three bullet points of vague verbs, "assisted with", "contributed to", "gained exposure to", gives a reader nothing to ask about.

Where should you look for these roles?

Listing boards carry roles across all the routes above. Search by task ("content writing intern", "research assistant remote", "junior designer remote") rather than by discipline name. A listing that names the output, how many pieces, what length, over what period, is worth more attention than one that only names a title, since a title says little about how week one is actually spent.
