Online internships for commerce and B.Com students: what counts as remote work
Short answer
An online commerce internship is supervised spreadsheet work: reconciling a ledger, sorting GST-adjacent data, entering transactions in a bookkeeping package, and writing up financial research. Whether it counts towards your degree is your department's call, not the UGC framework's alone, though that framework does place a summer internship worth 2 to 4 credits inside the degree.

What does week one of a remote commerce internship involve?
Expect data entry with a rule attached: matching invoices to a ledger, flagging entries that break a format, or reconciling one bank statement against a spreadsheet under supervision. This is the entry-level version of bookkeeping and compliance work that a commerce syllabus already covers in outline, applied to a real, small dataset instead of a textbook example. Articleship, the practical training that runs inside the chartered accountancy course itself, is a different arrangement, so ask which of the two a listing means before you apply.
GST-adjacent data work is the other task to expect early: sorting invoices by tax slab, checking that a GSTIN format is valid, or building a return-filing checklist from a set of documents. All of it is clerical support to a compliance process that someone qualified still signs off, so treat any listing that asks a first-year intern to file returns unsupervised as one to be wary of.
The tools involved are usually a spreadsheet (Excel or Google Sheets) and, in organisations that have moved past manual books, an accounting package such as Tally or Zoho Books, used at a data-entry level rather than a configuration level. If you have used Tally in a college computer lab, say so in the application, because a small organisation may not have anyone free to teach the software from scratch.
| Task | What it involves | Common tool |
|---|---|---|
| Ledger reconciliation | Matching entries across two records, flagging mismatches | Excel or Google Sheets |
| GST-adjacent data work | Sorting invoices by slab, checking GSTIN format | Spreadsheet, sometimes GST software's own portal view |
| Bookkeeping support | Entering transactions under a chart of accounts | Tally or Zoho Books |
| Financial research | Summarising an annual report or comparing two companies | Word processor, sometimes a template |
Ledger and GST work asks for accuracy rather than prior experience, so it is the row to apply on if you have none. Financial research and reporting suits an analyst or CA track better, because the output is a document you can hand an interviewer.
Which parts of financial research can you do remotely?
Research tasks for commerce interns usually mean reading annual reports or market data and producing a short summary: a company's revenue trend over three years, a sector comparison, or a one-page brief on a regulatory change. The output is a document. If an internship asks you to place a trade or issue an investment recommendation, ask who is registered to do that and whose name goes on it, and settle that before you start.
Content work sits next to research: explaining a financial term, a tax rule or a scheme for a general audience, aimed at a blog, a newsletter or a client-facing page. A B.Com background is an advantage here over a general content writer because the numbers and rules are less likely to be wrong.
A typical assignment reads something like: compare the last two quarters of results for two listed companies in the same sector and note what changed. The output is a page rather than a spreadsheet model, and the value to the organisation is a clear summary rather than an original analysis.
Cite the source filing or exchange disclosure you pulled the numbers from rather than restating a headline you saw somewhere else. Your supervisor will go back to the filing to check, and an untraceable number costs them the time to rebuild it.
How should a commerce internship look on a resume?
State the task and a number: "reconciled 40 vendor invoices against ledger entries for a small organisation" reads better than "accounts internship", because it tells an interviewer exactly what to ask about. An interviewer has your page in front of them and not the work itself, which is why a described task draws more questions than a title.
Avoid describing the internship in terms borrowed from a job description you have not done: "managed financial operations" for three weeks of ledger entry checking overstates the work and is easy for an interviewer to catch with one follow-up question.
Does a B.Com internship count towards your degree's own internship requirement?
Your B.Com sits inside a national credit structure. The University Grants Commission's Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes, the structure that came in with NEP 2020, lists summer internship at 02 to 04 credits in its minimum credit tables, for the 120-credit three-year route and the 160-credit four-year route alike.
It also sets one internship credit at two hours of engagement a week, which the framework works out as 30 hours across a 15-week semester, so a four-credit component is roughly 120 hours of work. If you leave after the first two semesters and want the UG Certificate, four credits of work-based learning in the summer term is part of what earns it.
None of that binds you automatically. Your university has to have adopted the framework, and your commerce department still decides how its own syllabus implements the component. That is a lot of local variation to expect uniformity from: AISHE 2023-24, the Ministry of Education's annual higher education survey, counts 40.8 lakh students across B.Com and B.Com (Hons) together, 12.0% of all undergraduate enrolment, and 10.1 lakh pass-outs in the year, 12.9% of all undergraduate pass-outs.
Departments differ on duration, on what the report should look like, and on whether a remote internship is accepted at all.
Before committing time to an internship for credit, get in writing from your department what counts: a stated minimum duration, a report format, and whether a remote or online internship is accepted at all. The guide to UGC rules on online internship credit covers how that recognition question is decided more generally.
Some departments still expect an in-person certificate. Ask this before you accept an offer, not after finishing it, since a report format decided in advance is far easier to satisfy than one reconstructed from memory at the end.
How employable does a commerce degree look on its own?
Better than it did a year earlier, on one national measure. The India Skills Report 2026, which lists AICTE, CII, Taggd and AIU as its partners and draws on a Global Employability Test taken by more than one lakh candidates, scores commerce graduates at 62.81% for 2026, up from 55%. Its all-India figure is 56.35% this year against 54.81% last year, so commerce sits above that line. What the percentage records is narrow: the report counts a candidate as employable when they scored above 60% on that test.
A stream-wide score still says nothing about you in particular, a limitation the guide to whether your college's tier decides your employability works through.
The gap between holding the degree and being ready for the work is yours to close, and an internship closes part of it by leaving you with something concrete: a reconciled ledger, a filed checklist, a written brief. Each of those is more specific on a resume than "studied commerce".
Do employers look at work done before the degree certificate?
Most of those asked do. Evaluation of work experience is the mechanism the employers surveyed most expect to prioritise for 2025 to 2030 in the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025, ahead of a degree requirement; the guide to how employers weigh work experience against degrees and certificates has the figures.
For a commerce graduate competing with hundreds of similar-looking resumes in the same marks band, a described internship is one of the few differentiators available before the interview stage. Bookkeeping, reconciliation and GST-adjacent work give an interviewer a direct question to ask: what did the numbers show, and what did you do when they did not match.
A supervisor who hands you a messy, real spreadsheet instead of a clean textbook exercise is watching how you handle the parts that do not fit the format. Say what you did with those rows when you describe the work later.
Which commerce tasks should you avoid as an intern?
Avoid any listing that asks you to handle client funds, sign off on a filing, or represent yourself as a qualified professional (a CA, a company secretary) before you are one. A genuine internship keeps you inside supervised, reversible tasks. A request to do anything final and unsupervised, especially anything involving money movement, is a sign to ask more questions or walk away, not a sign you have been trusted early.
The same caution applies to being asked to pay a fee, deposit or "training charge" before starting. A paid or unpaid internship should cost you nothing to begin.
Where should you look for an online commerce internship?
Search listing boards by task ("accounts intern remote", "GST data entry intern", "financial research intern") rather than by degree name, because a listing carries a job title rather than the name of a course. A listing that names the software you will use and the size of the dataset is more informative than one that only promises "hands-on experience", which leaves you guessing about what you would actually do on day one.
Before you accept, put the offer letter next to the guide to verifying an internship offer letter and go through it line by line. Dates, stipend terms and the name of whoever signed are the parts you can still question while declining is an option.
Arts and humanities students get pointed at content and research work without the numbers layer, and the guide to online internships for arts and humanities students covers that side. If you are weighing courses against roles more broadly, the index of which internship suits which course is where to begin.
- 1Remote commerce work is the part that travels over a spreadsheet: reconciling a ledger, sorting GST-adjacent data, entering transactions in a package such as Tally or Zoho Books, and writing up financial research.
- 2The UGC's Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes lists summer internship at 02 to 04 credits in the minimum credit tables for both the 120-credit three-year route and the 160-credit four-year route.
- 3One internship credit under that framework is two hours of engagement a week, which the framework works out as 30 hours across a 15-week semester.
- 4Whether any of it counts depends on your university having adopted the framework and on your own department's rules, across a programme that AISHE 2023-24 puts at 40.8 lakh students, 12.0% of undergraduate enrolment.
Can you intern with a chartered accountancy firm remotely as a B.Com student?
Some CA firms do offer remote data-entry or compliance-support internships to undergraduates, separate from the formal articleship reserved for CA students, but this varies firm by firm and is worth asking about directly rather than assuming.
Is an unpaid commerce internship still worth doing?
Judge it on the task and the supervision rather than on the stipend. An unpaid internship where someone reviews your work leaves you with something you can describe at interview. Agree the weekly commitment before accepting either way.
What software should you learn before applying?
Excel or Google Sheets is the baseline for the tasks described above. Familiarity with Tally is an advantage for bookkeeping-heavy roles, so check what your own syllabus and computer lab already cover before paying for a course in it.
Can a commerce internship be done alongside CA or CMA coaching?
Yes, provided the internship's weekly time commitment is agreed in advance and does not clash with fixed coaching class hours. Task-based remote internships are usually easier to fit around a coaching schedule than fixed-hour ones.
Does a bank or NBFC ever offer a fully remote internship?
It varies by institution, so ask about the working arrangement before applying rather than assuming. Customer data and compliance records sit on the institution's own systems, which is the usual reason a role is offered hybrid or in-branch. Fintech companies and research desks are worth searching alongside the banks themselves.
What if a listing asks for a security deposit before the internship starts?
Decline it. A genuine internship, paid or unpaid, should not require you to pay a deposit, training fee or registration charge to begin work. If the listing frames the payment as a refundable security against you dropping out, treat that as the same problem, because you have no practical way to enforce the refund once the money has left your account.
Which online internship is best for a BCom student?
Ledger reconciliation and GST-adjacent data work are the easiest online internships to start with as a BCom student, since both reward accuracy over prior experience. Financial research and reporting work suit a BCom student aiming at an analyst or CA track better, because that work ends in a document an interviewer can ask about.
