Which internships are MA students hired for, subject by subject?

Bengaluru's Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC) listed seven research themes for its 2026 postgraduate interns, from agriculture and public finance to gender studies, public health and local government. The scheme rules and syllabi behind this guide put economics interns on data and econometric work, political science interns on policy research, English interns on editing and translation, and psychology students on casework under a teacher.

Does your MA course already require an internship?

Whether an internship in MA is compulsory depends on your university's syllabus, and some make it so. Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University's NEP scheme for MA Sociology, session 2024-25, gives on-job training, internship or field projects 4 credits for 120 hours, and marks a minimum of 60 hours as mandatory.

One department sets twice that. The English department at SNDT Women's University, in its internship manual for 2014-16, calls its postgraduate internship "an 8-credit course" and asks for 240 clock hours on site, counting 30 hours for each credit, and a floor of 30 on-site hours in every week. That edition is a decade old; ask the department for the current one.

Some MA courses use a different word for supervised work. Savitribai Phule Pune University's second-year MA Psychology syllabus sets a graded practicum, and its course list for the third and fourth semesters has no course called an internship. Take each syllabus on its own terms.

The University Grants Commission's internship guidelines of 2023 are titled for undergraduate students, so for an MA the credit table in your own syllabus decides, and your department decides which host counts.

AICTE's National Internship Portal is run by AICTE under the Ministry of Education, and its home page names UGC and IGNOU students among those it serves. The same page says a student pays ₹0 to register, apply, be shortlisted or receive its completion certificate. Ask your department before applying whether a listing there will count toward your MA.

Which internships open only once you are in an MA?

ISEC's 2026 call took only social science postgraduates between the second and third semesters of a Master's programme, so a BA student was not eligible. Other internships for master's students name postgraduates in their rules without always shutting out a BA: NITI Aayog, MoSPI, the Reserve Bank of India and the PM Internship Scheme each set their own terms, and the Ministry of External Affairs asks for a finished graduate degree.

• NITI Aayog's internship scheme takes postgraduate students who have sat (or finished) their first-year, second-semester papers and scored 70% or better in graduation. An undergraduate must have sat the second-year exams and needs 85% in Class 12.
• MoSPI, the statistics ministry, took students in any year of a postgraduate programme into Phase I of its 2026-27 internship, provided the curriculum had at least one paper in Statistics or Mathematics and graduation marks were 70% or more. An undergraduate qualified only after the fourth semester, on 75% in Class 12.
• The RBI's research internship asks economics applicants for a postgraduate degree in all four of its departments, so it opens once the MA is finished.
• The Ministry of External Affairs internship policy asks for a graduate degree at the time of applying, which a student who joined the MA after a bachelor's degree already holds. A BA student qualifies only in the final year, and only where the curriculum makes an internship mandatory. Applicants must be no older than 25 as on 31 December of the internship year.
• The Prime Minister Internship Scheme, after a Ministry of Corporate Affairs change of 22 April 2026, admits students aged 18 to 25 in the final year of a bachelor's or master's course who bring a No Objection Certificate from their institution. The 2026 notice keeps the scheme's other eligibility rules in place, and the pilot rules published in October 2024 list anyone holding "any master's or higher degree" as ineligible, so for an MA student this is a final-year route.

One door closes as these open. The Indian Council of Social Science Research's Junior Internship notice for 2025-26 was for recent BA, BSc and BCom graduates, and it excluded anyone enrolled in a full-time postgraduate programme on the date of applying.

What internship for MA economics students can you apply for?

The Reserve Bank of India's research internship asks economics applicants for a postgraduate degree in each of its four departments, and states a stipend of ₹45,000 per month for six months, extendable by six more, with at most 20 interns a year. MoSPI's official statistics internship is the second route.

The RBI internship is based in Mumbai, interns find their own accommodation, and an intern who leaves inside the six months must give a month's notice or pay a month's stipend. The page says the scheme best suits people who have been in college "relatively recently" and are heading for a PhD, or for a research post in a government institution or a financial one.

MoSPI's National Internship in Official Statistics, Phase I of 2026-27, paid "Rs. 10,000/- per month", released each month only after the intern's guide sent a progress report. Enrolled students could take only slots of 2 to 3 months, and the ministry paid no travel or lodging.

Which internship for MA political science students takes postgraduates?

NITI Aayog's internship scheme guidelines take postgraduates after the first-year exams with 70% in graduation, in domains that include governance, programme monitoring and evaluation, and social justice. The internship runs six weeks to six months on an "unpaid basis". Lokniti, the Ministry of External Affairs and Kochi's Centre for Public Policy Research also take MA students.

The NOC makes NITI Aayog a vacation route. At joining, the college has to certify in writing that you will have no classes to attend for the whole internship period. An intern also needs 75% attendance for the certificate, and can apply only once in a financial year.

Lokniti, part of CSDS, describes a one-month internship for undergraduates, postgraduates and research scholars in the social sciences, on research and election studies. Confirm the dates and any stipend with Lokniti before you apply.

The Ministry of External Affairs' internship portal sets an honorarium of INR 10,000 a month for one to three months, with at most 30 interns a term, and a division may ask its interns to research, write reports and analyse developments.

Each term considers applicants from 14 states and four union territories, so your home state decides whether you apply for April to September or October to March. Check on the portal which term is open now before you plan around it.

Kochi's Centre for Public Policy Research says its 2026 internship programme gives preference to postgraduate students, in areas that include governance and law, and international relations and security. It asks for a minimum of 45 continuous working days on site in Kochi, and it offers no stipend.

Where does an internship for MA English students come from?

Through the department, on the two routes with published rules. SNDT Women's University's English internship manual records where its postgraduate interns went: media houses, where they developed and copy edited content; the University of Quebec at Montreal, for translation from Marathi into English and transcription; a heritage conservation society, for source research; and women's rights groups. Those were one department's past placements.

Government language work comes through the department. The Central Institute of Indian Languages, under the Ministry of Education, says in its internship guidelines that it takes requests through proper channels, from the department or school where the intern studies. The request must reach it at least four weeks before the start, and an institution may send five interns in a batch.

Is an MA psychology practicum the same as an internship?

Not at Savitribai Phule Pune University, where the practicum is its own graded course. Its MA Psychology syllabus for the second year, in force from July 2024, makes the practicum a 2-credit course in each specialisation (clinical, industrial or counselling), in batches of no more than eight students with a teacher supervisor, and lists no course called an internship.

The clinical practicum asks for at least five types of cases, studied in a hospital, clinic, correctional institution or NGO, and a detailed report on three. It carries 50 marks, half internal and half external. A student sits the practicum exam only after the teacher-in-charge and the head of department certify the practicum.

An internship for MA psychology students arranged outside the syllabus has no batch teacher and no examiner, so it does not replace the practicum unless your department says so. How do the routes compare for an MA student?

Five criteria separate the routes: the earliest point you can start, the pay a document states, whether the work is in person, whether it counts for credit, and whether it teaches your subject's technical skills. No route leads on all five. The Reserve Bank of India pays most, ₹45,000 a month, but only after the degree, and only a department placement or practicum carries credit by design.

• A department placement or practicum starts when your syllabus says, which for SNDT's English interns was towards the end of the programme. Pay is up to the host; SNDT's manual says some interns are paid, others are not, and some may have to pay. The work is on site or with a teacher present. It carries credit because it is written into the course, and it teaches your subject by design.
• A research institute such as ISEC opens after the second semester and paid Rs. 5,000 a month for two months in 2026, based on diligence and deliverables. ISEC's 2026 round was offline only. Credit depends on your department agreeing in advance. It teaches research methods in your discipline, under faculty.
• A government scheme opens after the first year at NITI Aayog, where it is unpaid, or, in MoSPI's 2026-27 Phase I, in any year for students with a Statistics or Mathematics paper, at ₹10,000 a month. Both are in an office. Credit is your department's call, and each asks for an NOC. The work is policy analysis or official statistics.
• The RBI research internship opens after the degree, when its postgraduate requirement is met. It pays ₹45,000 a month, in person in Mumbai, with placements in four RBI departments. Credit is not a question once the degree is done. The work is compiling data and running statistical and econometric tools for RBI research projects.
• A non-profit's own programme is the fifth route. Pledge A Smile Foundation (the publisher of this guide) runs an online internship that is open to students of any stream and free to apply to and to do. Interns own a weekly target, send a weekly report and get feedback on it. There is a performance-based stipend and a certificate on completion. It does not teach subject-specific technical skills.

What documents does an MA internship application ask for?

Each host sets its own list. Four of the six below, and the MEA for its missions abroad, need a paper from your college: a No Objection Certificate (NOC), a recommendation letter or a request from the department. Ask for that first, because someone else has to sign it.

• ISEC's 2026 form went by post with two recommendation letters, one from your head of department and one from another senior faculty member.
• The RBI wants your statement of purpose, CV and references sent with the application form to the email address of the department you choose.
• NITI Aayog checks original mark sheets and the NOC on the day you join, and cancels the candidature of anyone who cannot produce them.
• MoSPI's Phase I application included an NOC from the head of the institution or department.
• The MEA's headquarters internship needs the online form and copies of at least three identity proofs. For its missions abroad it adds a CV, an introduction letter from your head of institution, and an NOC if the internship runs alongside your course.
• CIIL takes the request from your department, and discourages requests sent by students themselves.

When should an MA student apply?

It depends on the host's calendar. The RBI takes applications in July to November for internships beginning 1 January, and in January to May for those beginning 1 July, so the window for a January 2027 start is open until November 2026.

NITI Aayog's online form is open on days 1 to 10 of every month, and it takes applications from six months to two months before your chosen starting month. So a student hoping to begin in May would apply in the opening ten days of a month between November and March, and have the NOC ready by joining.

The others were dated calls. ISEC accepted posted 2026 forms until 21 April 2026, for work between May and August. MoSPI's Phase I closed on 20 March 2026 for internships running from March to September 2026. Treat both as past rounds and look for the next notice on each site.

For a department placement, start a semester early. SNDT's manual says students typically start looking for organisations in the third semester; the faculty coordinator must approve the organisation in writing, and the student sends the HoD a written application as the fourth semester begins.
