Internship for economics students: the roles, the schemes and how to apply
Looking for an internship? Apply to Pledge A Smile FoundationShort answer
An internship for economics students can be official statistics, survey or research work. The Reserve Bank of India's Research Internship wants economics postgraduates. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation's NIOS 2026-27 took undergraduates after the 4th semester with a Statistics or Mathematics paper and 75% in Class 12, paying ₹10,000 a month.

Which roles do economics students get internships in?
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) offered 230 internships in Phase I of its National Internship in Official Statistics (NIOS) 2026-27, on topics from National Sample Survey data to India's foreign trade data and the asset and indebtedness of Indian households.
Internshala's remote economics listings, checked on 25 September 2026, had four matching the economics profile on page one. One wanted answers to students' economics questions for a tutoring app. One was startup research and investment analysis. Two were research roles, one of them collecting datasets from MoSPI, RBI and Union Budget documents and cross-checking them against the official source. Tutoring work is closer to internships for B.Ed and teaching students.
Across those listings and the schemes below, the work falls into four kinds: official statistics and survey data, research assistance for a faculty member or institution, policy and economic writing, and finance or business analysis. Finance and business analysis roles overlap with management, and are covered in the guide for BBA students.
Which government internship for economics students takes BA students?
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation's NIOS and NITI Aayog's internship scheme both take BA students who have sat their second-year or 4th-semester exams. NIOS also asks for a Statistics or Mathematics paper and 75% in Class 12, and paid ₹10,000 a month in 2026-27. NITI Aayog asks for 85% in Class 12 and pays nothing.
The notice sets "A stipend of Rs. 10,000/- per month", paid monthly only after the intern's guide sends a progress report for the previous month. An intern who leaves early gets neither stipend nor certificate. Interns placed in NSO zonal or regional offices can be paid ₹500 a day for field visits, for no more than 10 days in the whole internship. There is no travel allowance, and lodging is the intern's own arrangement.
Students still studying could apply only for slots of 2 to 3 months, and every intern had to submit a report or paper at the end.
Selection ran on aggregate marks, and offices were allotted on those marks and the place the applicant chose. An applicant could apply to Group A (New Delhi) or Group B (the rest of the country), never both; the notice says applying to both "will lead to disqualification and blacklisting". The notice adds that an internship "is not and cannot be construed as any kind of job".
The NITI Internship Scheme guidelines posted on its site (the notice is dated November 2018) set NITI Aayog's bar at "not less than 85%" in Class 12, list Economics among the domains, and make the internship unpaid.
A NITI internship lasts at least six weeks and at most six months, and no certificate is issued to an intern who leaves before the minimum. Interns bring their own laptops.
At joining, the selected student must produce original mark sheets and a NOC from the college, or the selection is cancelled. The NOC has to say the student will not be registered for any course that needs class attendance during the internship, so the internship has to fall in a period when the student has no classes to attend.
For a BA economics graduate not going straight into an MA, the PM Internship Scheme is one paid option. It is a Ministry of Corporate Affairs scheme that matches applicants with large companies. Its newest terms come from a PIB release dated 22 April 2026: monthly assistance of ₹9,000 or more, an eligible age of 18 to 25, and entry for final-year economics students at UG or PG level who bring their college's No Objection Certificate.
The scheme's FAQs date from the pilot: ₹5,000 monthly across a 12-month placement, for applicants aged 21 to 24 who hold no full-time job and are not "engaged in full-time education" (online and distance learners can apply). They say a BA qualifies, and a master's or higher degree, or a degree from an IIT, IIM, IISER, IIIT, NID or National Law University, rules you out. Which set of terms applies is shown on pminternship.mca.gov.in; read it there before applying.
The Department of Economic Affairs internship is another matter. Its advertisement dated 2 July 2020 took postgraduates and PhD students from institutions in the top 25 of the NIRF rankings or international institutes of repute, and said: "This program is not meant for graduate students." Other ministries' schemes are gathered in government internship portals beyond AICTE.
What does a research internship in economics involve, and who is it for?
A research intern helps researchers compile data, run analysis and draft papers. At the Reserve Bank of India, the Research Internship page says the intern "Will assist and collaborate with RBI researchers on projects to provide policy inputs and papers targeted for publication", and each of its four departments asks economics applicants for a postgraduate degree.
Places are few. The page says the Bank "would select a maximum of 20 interns every year", pays "a stipend of ₹45,000/- (Forty-Five Thousand only) per month", and runs the internship for six months, extendable, in Mumbai. It says the scheme best suits people who left college fairly recently and want to go on to a PhD or to research-oriented posts in government or finance.
An intern who leaves before completing six months must serve at least a month's notice, or pay an amount equal to a month's stipend.
The 2020 DEA advertisement described the same kind of work in policy form: "a brief research investigation into a key and specific economic issue/ problem faced by the country". Its token remuneration, ₹10,000 a month for a postgraduate, was offered to ten interns and payable on satisfactory completion and submission of the report or paper. If you are already in an MA, the options by programme are in internships for MA students.
An undergraduate who does not meet these bars can do research on a teacher's project. The UGC's internship guidelines say research interns are evaluated by their supervisor "based on their efforts and research output", then through a seminar or viva at the college.
Can economics students do programme monitoring or evaluation work?
Yes, as a college project. The University Grants Commission's research internship guidelines for undergraduates say: "Projects can also be scoped and aligned to the study of the effectiveness of various government and non-government schemes as well." That is evaluation work, set and assessed by your own college.
The skills are the ones NIOS lists in its objectives: "data collection, processing & analysis, publication and dissemination". Ask your department whether a study of a local scheme can be your internship, and whether the organisation running it, a non-profit or a company's CSR team, will let you work alongside its staff. More on company CSR teams is in the guide to CSR internships. Survey fieldwork is shared ground with sociology, set out in internships for sociology students.
Can you find an online internship for economics students?
A few. On 25 September 2026 Internshala's page was titled "44 Work From Home Economics Internships", but its first page showed four listings matching the economics profile, then the line "No more results found matching the profile filter." The listings after that line were other subjects: psychology, mathematics teaching, law, finance and more.
All four economics matches were paid, from "₹ 4,000 - 5,000 /month" to "₹ 5,000 - 10,000 /month", for one to six months. Of the 41 listings on the whole first page, 19 read "Unpaid", every one of them below the profile break. One of the paid research listings asked for a "BA/MA economics" student.
Some research internships run online by design. The Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS), a think tank on economic and development policy, states on its internship page that it admits postgraduates in economics, international relations and public policy from reputed institutes for one to two months during the summer and winter breaks, that "Few internship slots are also offered to under graduate students", and that "Internships are offered only through online mode". Each intern gets a completion certificate.
The UGC guidelines tell host institutions to keep a digital or group option open for a student who cannot find an internship in person. Before you take an unpaid remote role, read whether an unpaid internship is legal.
Which route to an economics internship fits you?
Five routes are open: the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation's NIOS or NITI Aayog for undergraduates, Reserve Bank of India or ministry research internships after a postgraduate degree, a faculty research project at your college, listings on a board such as Internshala, or a charity's in-house internship. Compare them on eligibility, pay, college credit, who supervises, and the skills taught.
- MoSPI's NIOS or NITI Aayog. Undergraduates after the fourth semester with a Statistics or Mathematics paper and 75% in Class 12; postgraduates and recent graduates need 70% in graduation. The 2026-27 Phase I paid ₹10,000 a month against a monthly progress report; NITI Aayog takes undergraduates at the same stage with 85% in Class 12, unpaid. A guide or nodal officer at the office supervises, and the report or paper is required. It is built to give hands-on exposure to official statistics. Credit depends on your college.
- RBI or ministry research internships. Postgraduates for economics applicants, and in DEA's 2020 terms, from top-25 NIRF institutions. RBI pays ₹45,000 a month; the 2020 DEA terms paid on completion. At RBI, interns assist its researchers with statistical and econometric work. For a BA student, they are a target for after the degree.
- A faculty research project at your college. Eligibility is what your department sets, and the UGC guidelines let a scheme study count. Pay depends on the project's funding. Your teacher supervises and signs, so the person vouching for you is already inside your college. The skills are whatever the project needs. Ask early in the semester.
- A listing platform such as Internshala. Eligibility is set by each employer; the four economics matches on 25 September 2026 paid ₹4,000 to ₹10,000 a month. The employer supervises. The UGC guidelines have a student take the parent institution's permission before joining, so ask your college first if you want credit. The four matches ranged from tutoring answers to checking datasets, so read the duties line by line.
- Applying directly to a charity's in-house internship. Pledge A Smile Foundation (the publisher of this guide) runs an online internship that is open to students of any stream and free to apply to and to do. Interns own a weekly target, send a weekly report and get feedback on it. There is a performance-based stipend and a certificate on completion. It does not teach subject-specific technical skills.
For survey and statistics skills, NIOS and a faculty project lead. For credit, the faculty project keeps everything inside your college. For pay, compare a listing's stated amount with the ₹10,000 a month NIOS paid in 2026-27 Phase I.
What should an economics student learn before applying?
Learn to find, clean and check official data, and to write up what it shows. The Reserve Bank of India's Research Internship page lists, as a desirable qualification, "Proficiency in applied econometrics and quantitative techniques" and familiarity with software such as "Stata / Eviews / Matlab / R / Gauss/ Python/ Tableau/ Power BI". Every NIOS intern had to submit a report or paper.
- Take the Statistics or Mathematics paper your syllabus offers, because NIOS asks for at least one.
- Download one official dataset, such as a Periodic Labour Force Survey table, and reproduce one published figure from it in a spreadsheet.
- Learn one statistical package well enough to run a regression and explain the output.
- Write a two-page note on one scheme or one indicator, with every figure sourced.
- Ask two teachers now whether they would write you a reference, since RBI shortlists on a CV, references and a Statement of Purpose.
When do government economics internships open?
Under the guidelines posted on its site, NITI Aayog takes applications from the 1st to the 10th of every month. The Reserve Bank of India takes them from July to November for a 1 January start, and from January to May for a 1 July start. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation's NIOS 2026-27 Phase I closed for applications on 20 March 2026; watch internship.mospi.gov.in for the next notice.
A NITI application goes in no more than six months ahead and no later than 2 months before the intended month, and a candidate may apply only once in a financial year. RIS, on 25 September 2026, listed its summer 2026 round as closed and said applications with a CV for winter 2026 could be sent later to its internship email.
RBI examines the January batch's applications in December and the July batch's in June. An application is valid only for the batch applied to, so a candidate who is not selected applies afresh in the next window.
The DEA advertisement still posted on its site is dated 2 July 2020 and covered the period up to December 2020, so treat its terms as history and look for a fresh notice on the Department's site. If your college must approve an outside internship, start that paperwork before the window opens; the letter itself is explained in the guide to NOC letters.
- 1The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation's NIOS 2026-27 Phase I offered 230 internships and admitted undergraduates who had completed or appeared in their 4th-semester exams, with a Statistics or Mathematics paper and at least 75% in Class 12.
- 2NIOS paid ₹10,000 a month, released each month only against a progress report; an intern who leaves early is not entitled to any stipend or certificate.
- 3The Reserve Bank of India's Research Internship takes at most 20 interns a year, pays ₹45,000 a month, and asks economics applicants for a postgraduate degree.
- 4Under the guidelines posted on its site, NITI Aayog's internship scheme admits undergraduates after the 4th semester with 85% in Class 12, is unpaid, and takes applications from the 1st to the 10th of every month.
- 5The University Grants Commission's internship guidelines name studies of the effectiveness of government and non-government schemes as a project a college can set.
Which degrees does the RBI research internship accept?
For economics, a postgraduate degree in economics or a related subject. On the Reserve Bank of India's Research Internship page, the bachelor's-level entries are B.E. or B.Tech, B.Sc. (Computer Science) and a degree in data science; economics appears only at postgraduate level. Work experience is not a pre-requisite, and the page says the scheme best suits people who have been in college relatively recently.
Can a PhD scholar in economics apply for the MoSPI internship?
Yes. The NIOS 2026-27 Phase I notice from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation covers students pursuing research or a PhD in Statistics, Mathematical Statistics, Operations Research, Economics, Demography or another field of applied statistics, with not less than 70% in graduation. Applicants who give a CGPA must state the conversion formula.
Where are MoSPI NIOS internships based?
At offices in New Delhi and around the country. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation's NIOS 2026-27 Phase I notice split its 230 internships into Group A, at offices in New Delhi, and Group B, at MoSPI offices in the rest of the country. One listed topic was foreign trade data analysis at DGCI&S in Kolkata.
Is an unpaid online research internship worth it for an economics student?
It depends on who supervises and what you hand in. The University Grants Commission's internship guidelines evaluate a research intern on the supervisor's view of effort and research output, then a seminar or viva at the college. On 25 September 2026, every unpaid listing on the first page of Internshala's remote economics category sat below the economics profile matches, so check the role is economics at all.
Does an economics internship have to be in a bank or finance firm?
No. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation's NIOS 2026-27 topics included web scraping of e-commerce data for price statistics, India's foreign trade data at DGCI&S in Kolkata, and the asset and indebtedness of Indian households. The University Grants Commission's internship guidelines also let a college set a study of how well government and non-government schemes work.
Can a first-year economics student get a research internship?
Not through NIOS, which admits undergraduates only after their second-year or 4th-semester exams. The University Grants Commission's guidelines make a 60 to 120 hour internship mandatory for UG students after the 4th semester, and say a policy should be framed for four-year students interested in research from the start, so ask a teacher about a small role on a department project.
