Does YCMOU offer an MSW or a BSW?

No. Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University runs neither a Master of Social Work nor a Bachelor of Social Work. Its own admission catalogue for the July 2026 session lists 151 programmes across postgraduate, undergraduate, diploma and certificate levels, and not one of them is a social work degree. The regulator's register agrees.

The catalogue is published as four lists, each short enough to read in a minute. The postgraduate list carries 34 entries, from M49 M.A. Marathi to P130 Online MBA, with no MSW among them. The undergraduate list carries 31 and holds no BSW. The 47 diplomas and 39 certificates are vocational: fashion design, fire and safety, automobile techniques, hospitality.

The regulator says the same from outside. The University Grants Commission Distance Education Bureau's register of recognised ODL and online programmes holds 109 rows for this university, 65 distinct programme names across the 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2025-26 sessions. None is a Bachelor or Master of Social Work. The closest is Master of Arts (Sociology).

An admission sold as a YCMOU MSW is an admission to something this university does not teach.

Is there a YCMOU MSW college list to check?

There is no such list, because there is no such degree. What circulates under that name is the university's study centre network, which its own prospectus puts at more than 2,400 learner support centres reached through eight regional centres. A centre on somebody's list proves nothing about the programme.

Ask for the programme code and the question becomes answerable in two minutes. Every programme here carries one: M86 for M.A. Sociology, G01 for the Bachelor of Arts, C07 for the Certificate in Human Rights. Find that code on the catalogue above, then search the Bureau's register for the same name. Where no code is forthcoming, there is nothing to check and nothing to pay for.

Which universities do have a BSW or an MSW in distance mode?

Twenty-six institutions hold a Master of Social Work recognised in open and distance learning mode for the 2025-26 session, and five hold a Bachelor of Social Work. Within Maharashtra those two figures are one and zero: Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University) at master's level, nothing at bachelor level anywhere in the state.

The five ODL bachelor's entries are Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University, the Indira Gandhi National Open University, Karnataka State Open University, Mahatma Gandhi Chitrakoot Gramoday Vishwavidyalaya and Parul University. Karnataka appears on both lists, and how its social work placements are arranged is a separate question.

Read the session column first. Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya at Wardha, inside Maharashtra, holds MSW recognitions for 2020-21 through 2024-25, and appears in the 2025-26 rows with five other programmes but not that one. An older recognition is not permission to admit you now.

Which YCMOU programme comes closest, and does it carry field work?

M.A. Psychology (M89) is the closest thing to a supervised practical the university runs. Sixteen of its 64 credits are practical courses, one of four credits in each semester: PSY504 Psychological Experiments, PSY508 Psychological Testing, PSY604 Research Project and PSY608 Practicum. M.A. Sociology (M86) carries no practical at all, its eight courses being theory.

What the practical asks of you is in the prospectus. For internal assessment the learner writes any ten practicals or test reports into a practical journal, chosen from a list in the self-instructional material and covering all four topics, for 50 marks. Practical courses are marked 50:50 against theory's 70:30, and the final-semester practicum is assessed through case study reports and their presentation.

That is a journal-and-report model, not an agency placement. The M.A. Psychology prospectus for 2025-26 sets out no block placement, no fixed field days, no external agency supervisor and no diary countersigned outside the university.

Two details matter if you are considering it anyway. The July 2026 catalogue lists M89 as second year only, so it is closed to a fresh first-year applicant. Its material exists in English alone, while M.A. Sociology is taught in Marathi and English, with books in both.

Three shorter programmes sit nearer the subject matter without being degrees in it: Certificate in Human Rights (C07), Certificate Programme in Counsellor Training (C08) and the Advance Diploma in Counselling and Mental Health (P152). None is a qualifying social work credential.

If you enrol elsewhere, who is supposed to arrange the field work?

The learner support centre, not the university headquarters. The University Grants Commission (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020 require every such centre to sit inside an affiliated college, staffed with faculty not below the rank of Assistant Professor for engaging theory contact sessions and supervising practical sessions in laboratory or field.

The text notified in the Gazette of India on 4 September 2020 sets a fallback. Where no such college is available or willing for a specialised programme or a component of one, the institution is to activate a Work Centre or Programme Centre at bodies it names: Krishi Vigyan Kendras, State Training Institutes and Industrial Training Institutes, government organisations and departments, an accredited laboratory, a government licensed industry, approved vocational institutes.

Registered voluntary organisations are absent from that list, and a full-text search of the 2020 regulations returns no mention of a voluntary organisation or an NGO anywhere. The document neither authorises nor forbids a nonprofit as your field work agency. That belongs to the university's field work manual, where the tests an organisation must pass are written down.

Two staffing norms in the same annexure are worth quoting at your coordinator: one or more qualified supervisors per two-credit practical course, and 60 hours of guided experiments with an internal supervisor per two credits, against 30 to 36 hours of theory contact per 16-credit semester. A programme that enrolled you without naming a supervisor is not meeting its own norm.

Ask for the Programme Project Report. Every institution must prepare one per programme before offering it, giving clear guidelines about the support learners need to perform the practicals prescribed, with provision of a practical book. Where nobody can produce it for your MSW, the field work has not been designed yet.

Can social work field work be done remotely or online?

Partly, and your university decides which parts, not the organisation hosting you. The 2020 regulations prohibit any programme requiring a practical or laboratory course as a curricular requirement from being offered through online mode, except where the practical component is limited to programming and coding including software tools. Distance mode sits outside that bar.

That bar survived amendment. The first amendment, Gazette No. 266 of 1 July 2021, changes only the NAAC and NIRF ranking requirements in regulation 3 and leaves regulation 4(C) untouched, so the prohibition reads as it did in 2020.

Work that usually transfers: secondary data, desk research, case documentation, analysis and the report itself. Work that usually does not: community contact hours, observation by a named agency supervisor, attendance recorded at the agency, and a sealed countersignature on your diary.

The register complicates this rather than settling it. Seven institutions hold an MSW and two a BSW recognised in fully online mode for 2025-26, which sits awkwardly beside a regulation barring online delivery of practical-bearing programmes. An online listing settles nothing about your own field work.

So get it in writing before day one. Ask your coordinator, by email, for the hours required, whether any may be completed remotely, who signs the record, and whether a scanned countersignature is accepted. Keep the reply. A verbal yes from a centre is worth nothing at evaluation.

How do you get a voluntary organisation to take you on and certify the work?

Ask in writing, with the paperwork attached, before you ask for the favour. An organisation agrees when it can see exactly what it is signing up to: your dates, the hours a week, who supervises, what must be countersigned, and the university's format for that certificate.

• Collect the field work manual, the diary format and the completion certificate format from your study centre first. Nobody can agree to a requirement that has not been written down.
• Send one page: name, enrolment number, programme and semester, the hour requirement, the dates you propose, and the exact documents you will need signed.
• Ask who supervises and which days that person is present. Someone absent on your field days cannot sign for your hours.
• Match the organisation's registered name, number and address to its own records, so the certificate survives a check later.
• Fill the diary the same day and get it countersigned then, rather than carrying four months of blank pages into a busy office in the last week.

Where an organisation hesitates, it is usually about supervision time rather than about you.

What should you check before paying a study centre for a social work admission?

Check the programme against the Distance Education Bureau's recognised list for the current session, generate your DEB-ID before admission, and pay the university rather than the centre. YCMOU's prospectus is blunt: do not pay additional fees at the learner support centre, and the university will not be responsible for extra payment made there.

The DEB-ID is not optional. The Bureau's DEB-ID page states it must be mandatorily created by any learner wishing to take admission in an ODL or online programme, so that admissions land in programmes the Commission recognises. It also carries the cut-off: the last date to admit learners for the August 2026 session is 15 September 2026.

Social work itself is not a barred subject. The disciplines prohibited under the 2020 regulations are engineering, medical and paramedical, pharmacy, nursing, dental, architecture, law, agriculture, hotel management, aircraft maintenance, visual arts and sports, plus research degrees such as M.Phil and PhD. A distance MSW is a legitimate thing to want.

Price gives you a second check. This university's M.A. Psychology costs ₹7,566 in the first year, of which ₹2,000 is the learner support centre fee, and ₹8,136 in the second: ₹15,702 for the degree. A quotation several times that, collected in cash, is a reason to telephone the regional centre first.

One deadline matters after you enrol. A postgraduate degree in distance mode must be completed within double its minimum duration, so a two-year MSW lapses four years from registration, with fresh admission the only route back. Field work postponed to the final year leaves no room to fail it once.
