How long an internship should be to be worth putting on a resume

What length do the rules actually require?

Each rulebook uses its own unit, so convert everything to hours before you compare two offers. The AICTE Internship Policy: Guidelines and Procedures treats one credit as 45 hours of work at the least, and a vacation intern working full time is expected to put in 45 hours inside a single week. Across a whole programme that policy adds up to roughly 630 hours for B.Tech and 450 for a three-year diploma.

Table 1 of the same policy places three to four weeks of inter or intra institutional activity in the break after your second or third semester, then four to six weeks with industry, a government body or an NGO in the breaks from the fourth semester onward.

General degrees are counted in smaller pieces. In 2023 the UGC issued its Guidelines for Internship/Research Internship for Under Graduate Students, which make 60 to 120 hours compulsory once you are past your fourth semester on a UG degree programme. Those hours carry 2 to 4 credits, set against the minimum of 120 credits in a three-year degree or 160 in a four-year one. A credit is defined there as two hours of engagement each week, so a 15-week semester works out at 30 hours.

Your own course may sit outside both documents. Professional streams such as law and medicine run their own councils, and the total they ask for is written into your university's regulations rather than into either of the frameworks above, so read those before you plan a length.

Is four weeks long enough to be worth listing?

Yes, if the four weeks produce something with your name on it. AICTE's own vacation slots run four to six weeks, so a month is a length the technical regulator treats as a unit of credit-bearing work rather than a trial run.

What a month cannot absorb is a slow start. If the brief arrives in week two and the first review happens in week four, nothing is finished. Ask for the deliverable and the review date before you begin, and treat week one as work rather than orientation. The length that fails is the one with no output attached, at any duration. Six months of unreviewed tasks leaves you with a date range, while four weeks with a report someone used leaves you with work you can describe in an interview.

What can you show for each length?

The criteria here are the same for every row: what you can realistically finish, and what a person reading your resume can check. Nothing in the table is a rule, and all of it assumes a named supervisor and an agreed deliverable.

Does a longer internship read better to a recruiter?

It reads better only when the extra weeks show up as extra work. Employers are reading experience closely. In its Future of Jobs Report 2025, the World Economic Forum ranks evaluation of work experience first among hiring assessments: 81% of the employers surveyed said they would keep prioritising it over 2025 to 2030, against 14% for short courses and online certificates.

There is one place length speaks for itself. Anything you can repeat, such as a weekly report you filed for twenty weeks, gives a reader evidence of consistency that no four-week entry can carry.

How many hours a week should it take?

Enough to finish the deliverable, and the two rulebooks disagree on what that means because they are describing different things. A UGC credit assumes two hours a week fitted around your classes. An AICTE vacation intern is treated as full time at 45 hours a week.

A part-time online internship is agreed somewhere between those two figures, and the hours you settle on decide whether the duration means anything. Ten hours a week for six weeks is 60 hours, the floor of the UGC's mandatory range. The same six weeks at three hours a week is not. What if your college sets the duration?

Then the college's number wins, and your job is to get it in writing before you begin. Both frameworks leave the decision with the institution: the UGC guidelines hand monitoring, supervision and evaluation of the student to an internship supervisor nominated by the institution, and AICTE's policy puts evaluation with the programme head, the training and placement officer, a faculty mentor or the industry supervisor.

Ask three things of your department. How many hours or weeks it requires, which form or diary it wants, and who signs the final evaluation. Credit can be refused for work a department never sanctioned beforehand, so put approval ahead of the joining date.

AICTE also sets leave inside the internship period, which matters if your exams fall mid-way: a student may take one day of leave over four weeks, or two days over six, apart from holidays and weekly offs. Build the calendar around your exam dates before you accept a start date.

How do you choose between a four-week and a three-month offer?

Count backwards from the date you need the entry to exist. If a placement season, an application deadline or an exam block falls inside the longer internship, the shorter one that finishes is worth more than the longer one that gets abandoned in week seven.

Where both fit the calendar, compare what each one hands you. Four questions decide it, and the answers should come from the organisation rather than from the listing.

1. What will I have produced by the end, named as a document or a result?
2. Who reviews the work, and how often?
3. What happens in the first week, since a slow start eats a short internship and shows up in a long one too?
4. Will the organisation confirm the period and the work in writing when it ends?

A three-month offer that answers all four beats a four-week one that answers none, and a four-week offer that answers all four beats a three-month one that answers none. Treat duration as the tie-breaker once those four answers are in.

What if placements are six weeks away?

Then the answer is four weeks, starting now, with the deliverable named on day one. A short internship finished before the interview beats a long one you are halfway through, because only the finished one gives you something to describe in the past tense.

When is a long internship the wrong choice?

When you cannot finish it. Leaving in week five of a six-month commitment costs you the reference and the certificate, and it leaves the organisation with unfinished work. A six-month internship taken alongside a final-year project and placement preparation is the version of this that goes wrong most often.

The money is the other test. Check whether payment arrives monthly or as one lump sum for the whole period before you agree to six months of it, which is covered in the money words used on Indian listings.
