Will an online internship teach you anything for your subject? A field by field answer

Does an internship have to match your degree?

Mostly not. In the NACE Job Outlook 2025 report, which 237 employers answered with responses collected from 5 August to 16 September 2024, 23.2% hire within their own industry's majors and no others, 50.8% said they hire those majors plus others outside them, and 24.3% said they take graduates of any major, whatever its relation to the industry they work in. Three quarters of that sample are open to a subject other than the one on the job.

That is a survey of American employers, so treat it as evidence about how recruiters behave rather than a rule about Indian campuses. The point it settles is narrow and useful. A mismatch between your degree and your internship is not automatically a problem to be explained away.

What a general internship cannot do is stand in for a placement that a regulator requires. Those fields are listed further down, with the rule that governs each.

What do employers say they assess on a resume?

Work experience and written skills, ahead of the subject on the certificate. The same NACE report ranks the attributes employers look for on a resume: problem solving at 88.3%, teamwork at 81.0% and written communication at 77.1%. Technical skills sit sixth at 73.2%, tied with a strong work ethic.

That ordering is the case for a general internship. The subject knowledge is real and employers want it, and it is not the only thing they read.

Which of those can a general online internship build?

The ones that come from owning work and delivering it to a deadline without a supervisor in the room. Written communication, planning your own week, asking for a brief when one is missing, handling feedback on something you made. Remote work runs almost entirely on writing, so the written part is unavoidable.

NACE also rates eight career readiness competencies for importance, then asks the same employers how proficient recent graduates are in each. Critical thinking and communication tie at 96.1% for importance. On proficiency, 55.9% of employers call recent graduates very or extremely proficient in critical thinking, and 53.5% say the same about communication.

Communication shows the widest gap of the eight, 42.6 percentage points, and it is the gap a remote internship is placed to narrow. The two competencies employers rank highest are covered separately.

What will it not teach you, subject by subject?

Anything that needs equipment, a supervised clinical setting, or a courtroom. The criteria for the table below are plain: what a general online internship can teach a student of that stream, and the part of the subject it cannot reach. The rows are judgement about what remote work can carry, not a rule from any document, and none of them is a verdict on a stream.

Read the right-hand column before you decide. If the missing thing is what you want to be hired for in three years, a general internship is one part of your search rather than the end of it. The psychology row has a guide of its own on what counts for psychology students without a clinic tie-up.

Which fields need a regulated placement instead?

Law and clinical psychology, in different ways. The Bar Council of India sets the law requirement in Rule 25 of its legal education rules, made under the Advocates Act, 1961. The Supreme Court records it in Gaurav Kumar v. Union of India, decided 30 July 2024: a minimum of 12 weeks for the three year law course and twenty weeks for the five year course.

Rule 25(a) adds that internship in any year cannot be for a continuous period of more than four weeks, and that every student shall at least have gone through one internship with trial and appellate advocates in the entire academic period.

Clinical psychology is regulated at the practice end rather than the student end. The Rehabilitation Council of India lists clinical psychologists among the categories of professionals under section 19 of the RCI Act, 1992, and the Council's norms and guidelines page states that a person holding a qualification the Council recognises practises as a rehabilitation professional in India once enrolled on the Central Rehabilitation Register it maintains. No internship substitutes for that qualification.

If your course ends in a licence to practise, the council that grants the licence sets the practical requirement, and that requirement is separate from anything you find on a listing board. Ask your department which body governs your course and what it counts.

So does an NGO internship count for a law student?

Rule 25 names the kinds of body a student may intern with, and NGOs are among them, alongside advocates, the judiciary, law firms, companies and legislatures. It also leaves room for other bodies a university stipulates, which means your own university can add to the list.

Two conditions travel with the choice. The four-week limit on a continuous stretch applies whatever the host is, and the advocate internship has to happen somewhere in the degree however many other weeks you log. A guide on law internships that are not court internships goes into the paperwork.

Will your college give credit for it?

Sometimes, and the hours are written down. The UGC's 2023 Guidelines for Internship/Research Internship for Under Graduate Students set aside 2 to 4 credits for an internship, out of the 120 credits a three-year UG degree needs, or 160 for a four-year one. They also make one internship compulsory, of 60 to 120 hours, once you have finished your fourth semester. A credit is counted there as two hours a week, which comes to 30 hours over a semester of 15 weeks.

Technical degrees count differently. The AICTE Internship Policy: Guidelines and Procedures puts 14 to 20 credits towards a B.Tech or B.E. and 10 to 14 towards a three-year diploma, counting internship alongside project work, seminars, entrepreneurial activity and institutional training. One credit is at least 45 hours, so the B.Tech figure starts at roughly 630 hours of that combined work and the diploma at 450.

Table 1 of that policy puts an internship with an NGO among the options for the vacation after the 4th or 5th semester and the vacation after the 6th. Either way the institution decides. Get the sanction in writing before you begin, as credit can be refused later for work nobody sanctioned first.

What if your stream is not in the table?

Apply the same test. Ask what part of your subject needs a room, a licence or a machine, and treat that part as out of reach remotely. Everything else is a question of what you get to produce.

For BBA and BCA the test is easy to apply, because management and computing work already runs through documents and screens. A B.Voc or another vocational programme may carry an on-the-job training component set by its own scheme, so read that scheme before treating a remote role as a substitute for it. Where a council or a board sets practical hours for your course, a general internship sits alongside those hours rather than counting towards them.

Post-graduate students have one extra consideration. If you intend to be hired into a specialisation, get at least one internship that a person working in it would recognise. A general one alongside that does no harm.

How do you make a general internship read as relevant to your subject?

By choosing the deliverable, not the title. Pick tasks inside the internship that produce something a person in your field would recognise, then describe the output rather than the role.

1. Ask in week one which finished piece of work will be yours, and get it named in writing.
2. Steer at least one piece of the work towards your subject: a compliance note if you are in commerce, a rights or procedure summary if you are in law, a survey instrument if you are in psychology, a data cleaning script if you are in science.
3. Keep the artefacts. A draft you wrote, a sheet you built, a report someone acted on.
4. Write the resume line as a result with a number in it, and keep the certificate out of the line entirely.

Then check the claim survives a follow-up question. If an interviewer asks what you personally produced and you can open the file, the internship has done its job.

When is a general online internship the wrong choice?

When your degree's own requirement is unmet and the calendar is short. A five-year law student in the final year with no advocate internship logged needs those weeks, not a remote role. A B.Tech student one semester from the credit deadline needs hours the department will sign off.

A listing that will not say what you will produce is a second reason to walk away. Settle that before you accept, and settle the length too, since it matters as much as the work: see how long an internship needs to be to stand up on a resume. If you are weighing the category as a whole rather than the fit with your subject, start with whether an online internship is worth doing at all.
