Does IB CAS Still Require a Minimum Number of Hours?

Does IB CAS still require 50 or 150 hours?

No. No public International Baccalaureate (IB) document sets an hours total for creativity, activity, service (CAS), and none sets a 50-hours-per-strand split. The published Diploma Programme subject brief makes completion turn on achievement of the seven CAS learning outcomes, evidenced in a CAS portfolio rather than a timesheet.

The DP subject brief for creativity, activity, service, marked “For students graduating in 2017 and after”, fixes four numbers for CAS and not one of them counts hours. The IB's CAS programme page, last updated 19 February 2026, applies the same test: CAS “is not formally assessed”, and students “provide evidence of achieving the seven learning outcomes for CAS”.

That settles the rule and not your problem. You are here because a figure is being quoted at you, and what to do about it turns on who is doing the quoting.

There are three candidates: a website, counsellor or old handbook repeating a total nobody rechecked; your own school's CAS coordinator; or a separate service scheme you are enrolled in alongside the DP. Only the coordinator can withhold your sign-off, which is why the branch you are on matters more than the number.

Which of the numbers you have been given comes from the IB?

Four of the numbers come from the IB: seven learning outcomes, one CAS project lasting at least a month, at least 18 months of CAS, and three formal interviews with the school's CAS coordinator or adviser. The 150-hour total, the 50-hours-per-strand split and any weekly hours figure come from somewhere else.

The 150 in the subject brief is real, and it is why the myth is so durable. It appears exactly once, in the opening paragraph describing the Diploma Programme as a whole, where higher level subjects carry 240 recommended teaching hours and standard level subjects 150. The word “hours” appears in that sentence and nowhere in the brief's CAS requirements.

The same pair of numbers turns up in the IB's administrative rulebook, again attached to subjects. A school-hosted copy of the Diploma Programme Assessment procedures 2025 tells coordinators that an additional subject still requires tuition for the recommended 150 hours at standard level or 240 at higher level, and that no core element, CAS included, can be registered as an additional subject. No hours figure is attached to CAS anywhere in its 282 pages.

What should you ask the counsellor or handbook quoting the figure?

Ask which IB publication states that hours figure, and which edition of it, then stop if none comes back. Not one of the IB documents cited on this page carries an hours total for CAS, so an uncited figure is repetition, and it does not bind you.

The figure spreads because it is convenient. A total is the easiest thing to certify against and to administer across a whole cohort, so handbooks quietly convert the IB's outcome language into a round number.

Most service schemes an Indian student meets outside the DP do count something, which hardens the expectation. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) letter to principals on Social Empowerment through Work Education and Action projects, dated 4 February 2020, asks schools to keep SEWA records ready for scrutiny by the Board at any time during the year.

That letter sets no hour total either, only the instruction it carries forward from its 2018 circulars: one period a day for health and physical education in classes IX to XII. How SEWA is marked and what a school logs for it runs on rules of its own.

Further up the system the totals are explicit. Several Indian universities put weekly and per-semester field work hours in writing for the MSW. CAS is the outlier in a country where service is normally counted.

Does a school's own hours target bind you?

In practice yes, though not because the IB requires it. CAS is administered locally, and the coordinator signs the completion your diploma depends on. An hour log at an IB school in Bengaluru or Gurugram is a school tracking tool. The IB sets no such threshold. Refusing to keep it still puts you in an argument with the person holding the pen.

The subject brief places student guidance at school level, through the school's CAS handbook, information sessions and meetings. It gives a student no right of appeal against a local requirement.

The record-keeping around you is real even where the hours are not. The assessment procedures require schools to keep central CAS records, make them available to an IB Global Centre for six months after the session, and retain supporting evidence until 30 December or 30 June. CAS implementation is evaluated every five years inside the school's DP evaluation. A coordinator asking you to log something is answering to that.

What the log will not do is finish CAS for you. A spreadsheet with no reflections attached evidences none of the seven outcomes. What counts as CAS service and the evidence that proves it matters more than the total at the bottom.

The move that works is converting the number into your coordinator's own currency. Ask in writing which of the seven outcomes each block of hours is meant to evidence. An answer hands you a portfolio structure; no answer tells you the figure is bookkeeping.

One limit on this page: the full CAS guide, which the assessment procedures name as the supporting publication for CAS and date March 2015, is sold through the IB store and hosted in the Programme Resource Centre. A student cannot open it, so whether it bars a school from making an hour count a condition of sign-off cannot be confirmed from anything public.

What does the IB count instead of hours?

Achievement of the seven CAS learning outcomes, each evidenced at least once. The subject brief states that students provide the school with evidence of having achieved every learning outcome at least once through their CAS programme, collected in a CAS portfolio which is itself not formally assessed. Some outcomes are met repeatedly, others once.

The seven outcomes, in the wording of the DP subject brief:

• Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth.
• Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.
• Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience.
• Show commitment to, and perseverance in, CAS experiences.
• Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.
• Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.
• Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions.

Read that list against a long Saturday spent packing ration kits. Turning up evidences none of them. Deciding what was needed, staying past the first week and writing honestly about what went wrong is what those descriptors ask for.

Which CAS deadline is still reachable in DP2?

The one your coordinator reports to, and it does not move. The IB requires coordinators to confirm each student's CAS completion through the IB information system by 1 June for a May session and 1 December for a November session. A CAS project needs a month, so count back from that date.

CAS formally begins at the start of the Diploma Programme and continues regularly, ideally on a weekly basis, for at least 18 months. Nobody can restart that clock, so the length of your CAS programme was fixed by your start date. The project is the piece still in your hands.

The IB's CAS project guidance, last updated 19 February 2026, opens the options wider than most students expect. A project may address any single strand or combine two or all three, so it need not be service. The IB adds that it prescribes no specific projects, and that students should be involved in activities they initiated themselves.

Two shortcuts are closed. A project begun in the final month of DP2, the second year of the Diploma Programme, has no room to run its month before that notification date. And the subject brief requires that a CAS experience must not be used or included in the student's DP course requirements, so the group four project or an internal assessment cannot be recycled.

What happens if your coordinator reports CAS incomplete?

The diploma is withheld until CAS is finished. A school-hosted copy of the IB's Diploma Programme Assessment procedures 2025 states that non-completion of CAS results in the diploma being withheld until the student has completed the requirements, and that a student is allowed one further year in which to finish. Complete it inside that year and the full diploma follows.

Article 2.3 of the General regulations: Diploma Programme, part B of the Diploma Programme Assessment procedures, lists CAS with the extended essay and theory of knowledge as one of three core requirements, a programme of activities that must be successfully completed. Article 11 gives successful diploma students a Diploma Programme Results document confirming that all CAS requirements were completed, and gives a student who fails to satisfy the diploma requirements DP Course Results instead.

The further year has dates on it. Coordinators notify the IB of each student's CAS status by 1 June or 1 December in the year of assessment, and a student who misses that gets one more year, expiring 11 months after results are issued. No retake category exists for CAS, so the extension is the only route back. Miss the second date and you keep the course results already awarded.

Those numbers are quoted from the 2025 edition, the school-hosted copy linked above, which opens without a login. Numbering shifts between editions, so check the edition for your own session before quoting a clause at anyone.

What you cannot do is act alone.

• Article 10.1: registration for a session is made only by the school's DP coordinator through the IB information system, and students cannot register themselves.
• Article 3.1: that coordinator is the intermediary for any communication with the IB.
• Article 17.4: an appeal must be raised by the head of school or the coordinator, though a school must submit one on a student's behalf if asked, even where it disagrees.

A 42-point candidate with unfinished CAS is not a 42-point diplomate until a coordinator updates the status, and only the school can make that update. CAS is recorded as complete or incomplete, so points in six subjects cannot compensate for it.

Where should you start if you still need service that counts in India?

With two public registers and one question. The NPO Darpan portal shows whether an Indian nonprofit exists on paper, MY Bharat lists volunteering and experiential learning opportunities, and the question to settle before anything else is whether one named adult will supervise you and still be reachable in your final term.

The IB's test for service fits in a sentence: an unpaid, voluntary exchange with a learning benefit for the student, offered in collaborative and reciprocal response to an authentic community need, with everyone's rights and dignity respected.

Three checks before you commit a month to an organisation:

1. Get the supervisor's name in writing at the start, and ask whether that person expects to still be in post in your final term. Confirmation is easy to get in April, hard to get from a stranger in December.
2. Check the organisation exists on paper. A Unique ID on the NPO Darpan portal, run by NITI Aayog (the National Institution for Transforming India), is the quickest check. Not every registered nonprofit is listed, so a missing ID is a question to put to the organisation. Registration is also not supervision: the ID confirms only that the organisation exists on paper.
3. Agree what you will be doing, not what you will be watching. Observation gives you nothing to write against initiating and planning a CAS experience.

MY Bharat (Mera Yuva Bharat), the national youth platform run by the Department of Youth Affairs, lists opportunities you can find without the school. Read its answers on the experiential learning stream first: the stream is, as of now, specifically for undergraduate students.

Two pieces of paperwork tend to arrive here. Most DP students are under 18, so an organisation will ask for a letter from a parent, and what a parental consent form does and does not settle in Indian law is narrower than the form suggests. If the placement is called an internship, the label changes nothing for CAS, but it changes which Indian rules apply to a school student's placement.

Put the request and the reply in writing. Nine months later the coordinator will ask for confirmation of what you did and when, and a dated record is what you will be reconstructing from. A phone call leaves you with nothing to produce.
