Is the NEP 2020 Internship Mandatory? None of Its Three Paragraphs Sets an Hour

What is "Internship (as per NEP 2020), 2 credits, 60 hours" made of?

Three documents, and only one of them can be held against you. The words "as per NEP 2020" are nowhere in the policy. The word internship is, in paragraph 11.8. The numbers belong to the University Grants Commission, from guidelines dated 2023. The version that grades you is your own scheme of examination.

A row close to that one is what most students meet first, in a scheme of examination or on a noticeboard. The composite below is not a quotation from any one university.

Which part of the "as per NEP 2020" credit line comes from the policy itself?

Only the word internship. It appears four times in the 66-page policy, across paragraphs 4.26, 11.8 and 17.8, and none of the three carries an hours figure, a credit value or a consequence. Paragraph 11.8 is the one a degree course is quoting, and it is written as something institutions will provide.

Paragraph 11.8, in the higher education chapter: "students at all HEIs will be provided with opportunities for internships with local industry, businesses, artists, crafts persons". The full text is in the National Education Policy 2020 as hosted by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).

Read whole, 11.8 is about community engagement, environmental education and value-based education; the internship clause arrives at its end, "as part of a holistic education". Paragraph 17.8 only lists "the inclusion of research and internships in the undergraduate curriculum" among the shifts the policy wants.

Where do the 60 hours and the 2 credits come from, if not from NEP 2020?

From the UGC's Guidelines for Internship/Research Internship for Under Graduate Students, dated 2023. Section 5.0 states that an internship of 60 to 120 hours after the fourth semester will be mandatory for students enrolled in UG degree programmes. That sentence, not the policy, is what a college quotes when it calls the internship compulsory.

The arithmetic sits in the same section. A credit is two hours a week; over a 15-week semester that comes to 30 hours. So 2 credits is 60 hours and 4 credits is 120. The four-year Honours with Research degree adds a 12-credit, 360-hour dissertation in the eighth semester.

Two limits sit on that sentence. It is a guideline, not a regulation notified in the gazette. And it is written into two frameworks, the National Higher Education Qualifications Framework (NHEQF) and the Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes (CCFUP), which your university must adopt before the numbers reach you.

Whether an engineering or diploma student sits inside that band turns on the same adoption step. Section 5.0 names no exception for technical programmes, but it assigns the credits within the 3-year and 4-year UG degree structures of the NHEQF and CCFUP, which technical curricula generally do not follow. Where your university has not applied CCFUP to a B.Tech or a diploma, the 60 to 120 hours do not arrive; where it has, they can. Check your own scheme of examination.

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) works to a different unit. It bundles internship, project work, seminar and entrepreneurial activity into one block of 14 to 20 credits, stated as a minimum, in its AICTE Internship Policy, and proposes that block rather than prescribing it.

The policy is read clause by clause in the AICTE internship policy explained. Whether any of it hardens into something a B.Tech student can be failed for is taken up in whether a B.Tech internship is compulsory.

Is the NEP 2020 internship mandatory, or can the "as per NEP 2020" credit line be held against you?

Not on NEP 2020's authority. The policy is a Government of India document, not an Act, a regulation or a gazette notification, and nothing in it is enforceable against a student. An internship becomes mandatory only through the chain below it: the UGC guidelines, your university's adoption of them, and your scheme of examination.

Paragraph 27.2 gives the reason it lands unevenly: "since education is a concurrent subject, it will need careful planning, joint monitoring, and collaborative implementation between the Centre and States". Each university writes its own ordinances.

1. The regulator for your stream: UGC for general degrees, AICTE for technical ones, and for other professions a statutory council such as the National Medical Commission or the Bar Council of India.
2. Your university's adoption of that framework, by ordinance or academic council resolution.
3. Your programme's approved scheme of examination for your year of admission, where hours and credits become a rule.

The person who can place your batch in that chain is the nodal officer. Section 6.2 of the UGC guidelines provides that the internship programme "will be fully organised, executed and monitored by the R&D cell of HEI through a Nodal Officer to be appointed by the Vice Chancellor/Director/Principal/Head of the Department of HEI".

What does the NEP 2020 internship clause look like for a Class 7 student?

Not a workplace posting. In school it becomes a block in the annual work plan: a minimum of 10 days or 60 hours of school time, planned by subject teachers, with no marks or grades and the school responsible throughout. The wording behind it is paragraph 4.26.

Paragraph 4.26 reads: "All students will participate in a 10-day bagless period sometime during Grades 6-8 where they intern with local vocational experts such as carpenters, gardeners, potters, artists".

NCERT's PSS Central Institute of Vocational Education published Guidelines for Implementation of 10 Bagless Days in School in July 2024, and the Central Board of Secondary Education sent the link to affiliated schools on 23 September 2024 through Circular No. Skill-83/2024. What that entry contains:

• Ten days or 60 hours of school time, suggested as two blocks of five days.
• Activities set by subject teachers: soil testing, plant identification, a dairy or food industry visit, monuments, craft sessions with local artisans.
• No marks or grades. The guidelines allow "internal and informal assessment" with feedback, encourage self-assessment, and let the teacher prepare an overall report with the students.

Those 60 hours come out of the timetable, not out of a child's evenings. Whether a state or school has begun running the days is a separate question from what is prescribed.

What does NEP 2020 never state about internships?

No stipend, no rule on online internships, no criteria for who may host you, no format for proof of completion. The policy supplies none of the four, and each gap is filled elsewhere or not at all: by the UGC guidelines, by separate law, or by your university.

• Money. Nothing in the policy entitles an intern to be paid. A stipend obligation appears in this chain only for apprenticeships, under the Apprentices Act, 1961, which UGC's 2025 degree apprenticeship guidelines apply through a contract of apprenticeship.
• Online mode. Section 7.0(c) allows it: "If a student fails to get an internship in physical mode, then the host institute should have a provision for digital or group internship". Beyond that sentence it sets no separate terms for remote work, and what a remote placement has to look like before credit is granted is covered in how an online internship earns UGC credit.
• Who may host you. Section 6.1 defines an Internship Providing Organisation as "any organisation, HEI, philanthropy, farmer, government organisation, R&D institutions, research labs, artisans, enterprises… cooperatives, corporates", and the objectives name non-government organisations. Whether a nonprofit can carry interns in a given year tends to follow its funding, and where Indian NGOs get their money sets out those sources.
• Proof. Under section 6.3 the supervisor "will ensure issuing of completion certificates"; section 8.0 grades you on an activity logbook, your report and a viva before one internal and one external member. Registration sits on the institution's own portal, with a central one described only as something that "would help"; that separate route is walked through in registering on the National Internship Portal.

Why does the date on each document matter more than the wording?

Because the policy line and the hours rule are three years and two documents apart. NEP 2020 was released on 29 July 2020 with no internship figure in it; the 60 to 120 hours arrived from UGC in 2023. The phrase "as per NEP 2020" compresses that gap into four words.

• 24 July 2020. UGC's Guidelines for HEIs to offer Apprenticeship/Internship embedded Degree Programme carry a foreword dated five days before the policy, and credit the Union Budget 2020-21, not NEP.
• 29 July 2020. The policy is released, with paragraphs 4.26, 11.8 and 17.8, and no hours figure in any.
• 2023. The UGC guidelines add the hours, the 2 to 4 credits and the fourth-semester timing.
• 23 September 2024. CBSE circulates the NCERT guidelines that turn paragraph 4.26 into timetabled school activity.
• 2025. UGC ties degree apprenticeships to the Apprentices Act, 1961, quoting paragraph 16.7, the one policy paragraph on apprenticeships that never uses the word internship.

The earliest document in that sequence was written before the policy it now gets filed under. The policy supplied one word. Every number in the specimen line came from somewhere later.
