Forty-four lakh Indians study by distance. Does an internship change the interview answer?

How many students in India are actually studying by distance?

The All India Survey on Higher Education for 2023-24, published by the Ministry of Education, records 44.0 lakh students enrolled through the distance mode of universities, around 40.3% of all university enrolment in the country. Within that distance group, 63.7% sit at undergraduate level and 31.3% at postgraduate level.

Open universities account for 27.2% of total university enrolment, behind state public universities at 29.3% and ahead of state private universities at 21.4%. Two out of every five people enrolled in a university in India are studying this way.

If you are one of them, the worry underneath the internship question is usually about the degree itself, and whether it will be read as equal to a campus one. An internship is the one line you can still add after the degree is fixed, which is why it is the thing that gets asked about.

Does UGC treat a distance or open-university degree as equal to a regular one?

Regulation 22 of the UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020 covers degrees at undergraduate and postgraduate level awarded through Open and Distance Learning mode or online mode by a higher educational institution the Commission has recognised under them. Such degrees, the regulation says, "shall be treated as equivalent to the corresponding awards of the Degrees... offered through conventional mode." That is the regulator's own wording, not a marketing line from any university.

The equivalence is conditional. It applies where the institution holds UGC recognition under those regulations for the programme concerned, which is a narrower set than "any distance degree from any university". A programme outside that recognition sits outside Regulation 22, so it is worth checking with your university directly rather than assuming the rule covers your course.

What the regulation settles is the legal standing of the qualification. It says nothing about how an individual recruiter reads a CV naming an open university instead of a familiar campus, and those two questions are worth keeping apart.

What does an internship change in the interview itself?

It moves the conversation off the college name and onto work you did. An interviewer gets something to ask about that does not depend on the degree at all, such as the task you owned, what you sent each week and what a supervisor said about it. That is the same evidence a campus student offers, produced by a different route, and it is the part of the page Regulation 22 is silent on.

It also answers a more direct question. If an interviewer asks what you did with your time while studying this way, "I was responsible for a piece of work over two months, and this is what my supervisor said about it" is a full answer. A description of the coursework alone is not, even when it is a truthful account of how your study went.

Who issues the internship paperwork on a distance programme?

Your school of studies or your regional centre, rather than a central internship office. Write to them for a no-objection letter or bonafide certificate, and ask early enough that a slow reply does not cost you the placement. Where practical work is part of the course, the individual programme's own pages set out the form it has to take.

Checked directly on 19 September 2026, IGNOU's official site carried no top-level internship or project-work policy page in its main navigation, which covers online education, programmes, admission and the regional centre network, so there is no single document to point a host organisation at.

Which programmes do distance students actually take?

Box 16 of the survey lists enrolment in the main distance-mode programmes, and B.A. is the largest of them at 16.3 lakh in 2023-24. M.A. follows at 8.3 lakh, B.Com. at 3.96 lakh, M.B.A. at 2.11 lakh, B.Sc. at 1.65 lakh, M.Sc. at 1.19 lakh and M.Com. at 1.05 lakh. General arts and commerce degrees carry most of the enrolment that box reports.

The same table shows the direction of travel over five years. B.A. enrolment in distance mode fell from 18.9 lakh in 2019-20 to 16.3 lakh in 2023-24, while M.B.A. rose from 1.55 lakh to 2.11 lakh across the same years.

The programmes that box reports are mostly general degrees rather than technical ones, so the roles open to you are the roles open to any arts or commerce student: written work, coordination, research, outreach, data handling. A B.A. from an open university and a B.A. from a campus college are applying to the same listings.

Does the internship need to relate to the distance-degree subject?

Neither the survey nor the UGC regulation addresses subject match between a degree and an internship, so this is a judgement call left to you and it turns on the role. Where a job posting names your subject as a skill requirement, an internship in that area gives you something to answer with when the overlap is tested.

Where the degree functions as a general eligibility filter instead, an internship that shows reliability, communication and finished work is worth more than chasing subject overlap. That same general-versus-specific split runs through the guide to how much the tier of your college decides.

Neither the enrolment data nor the hiring data above settles which of those two situations you are in. That has to be judged against the specific job posting.

How should the resume line itself read?

Name the organisation, the role, the dates, and one line on the deliverable, in that order, the same format a campus student would use. Do not add a note explaining the distance degree next to it. The internship line stands on its own evidence, and pointing back to the degree undercuts the reason for having a second data point at all.

Putting the internship above the degree on the page, to signal what should be read first, is a layout choice open to anyone. No source above recommends it, so treat it as an option rather than something to copy by default.

What if the distance university itself is not UGC-DEB recognised for that programme?

Then Regulation 22 does not apply, because the equivalence it grants is written around institutions the Commission has recognised. Recognition is granted programme by programme and for specified academic years, so a university being well known is not the same as the course you took being on the list for the years you studied it.

The Distance Education Bureau publishes its recognition lists year by year, with separate lists for ODL programmes, for online programmes, and for the Category-I institutions entitled to offer ODL programmes. The lists run from 2020-21 to 2025-26 and give the academic year, the mode, the university, the state, the programme and its level in separate columns. Because they are organised by academic year, the question to answer is whether your programme appears for the years you were enrolled, not whether the university appears anywhere.

Do that check early. It costs nothing now and costs a great deal at the point of a government job application or an admission to a higher degree, where the recognition is verified by someone else and the answer arrives too late to act on.

An internship does not repair that gap where it exists. Only the university or a fresh verification with UGC-DEB can. Where recognition is confirmed and the only open question is how the degree reads at an interview, the internship route above applies in full.

Should a distance student spend a free semester on an internship or another certificate course?

Separate them by what each one produces. A certificate records a course you completed alone. An internship records work that somebody else set, watched and commented on, which is a different kind of evidence.

A certificate earns your time where a posting names the tool or the qualification it wants. Where a posting names nothing specific, a term spent on supervised work leaves you more to describe.

The degree question and the evidence question stay separate throughout. Regulation 22 already settles the degree's legal standing, and an internship moves that standing in neither direction. What it changes is the line sitting next to the degree on your resume, which is the part still open to you to build.
