SCHOOL KIT · FEB 2026

The reason a child leaves school is almost never the classroom.

School is nominally free. The bag, the notebooks, the shoes and the bus fare are not, and those are the costs that make a family feel a child can't turn up.

The stakes, in numbers

Dropout peaks at 12.6% at the secondary level: Classes 9–10, right before the board year. Among enrolled children who stop attending, financial pressure is one of the leading reasons given.

We set up under the facade of an MCD school in Dwarka. Bags went out class by class: the little ones first, holding them up before anyone told them to.

It is a free school. Families still spent about ₹8,331 a year per child to keep one in it (NSS 2017–18), roughly a fifth of that on books, stationery and uniforms. A kit is aimed squarely at that fifth.

What was in a kit
  • School bag, notebooks and stationery
  • Uniform items and shoes

Why we ran it

Reaching kids at the primary level is deliberate. The exit comes later, at Class 9 or 10, but the small recurring costs that push a family toward it start early. Cover them now and the odds a decade out change.

A school kit removes a specific, documented cost. Then we go back the next year, because a bag only lasts about a year.
