Which weeks of the calendar does the summer internship take?

It sits in the gap between one semester's examinations and the next semester's classes. The Karnataka State Higher Education Council puts the B.Com internship exactly there: four to five weeks in any business organization, immediately after the fifth semester examination but before the commencement of sixth semester classes. Its BBA framework asks at least four weeks in that same window.

Which window binds you depends on which document your university adopted, and the published documents do not agree.

The 2021 framework reads most like a summer job. It provides Summer Internship as a Discipline Specific Elective of six to eight weeks after the fourth semester, weighted at five credits, with the report and viva-voce in the fifth semester. One further credit sits under lectures so a teacher can guide you.

The 2025 revision shrinks it. In the current UGC framework for undergraduate commerce, Summer Internship is its own credit category carrying two to four credits of the 120 needed for a three-year degree, and the model structure shows two credits sitting in semester six.

Two things follow. A host who can only take you in October is no use for a credit due before sixth semester classes start, and the college is shut for the same vacation, which is why the office you would ask for help is not open. A comparable block sits on a different calendar in the summer internship project in the Delhi University School of Open Learning MBA.

Why does no placement cell arrange this one?

No regulator requires a commerce college to arrange it. The All India Council for Technical Education requires each approved institute to run a Training and Placement Cell headed by a Training and Placement Officer, whose role under the AICTE Internship Policy is to arrange internships and campus visits. Commerce degrees sit outside that requirement.

The boundary is drawn in AICTE's own approval guidance. Its guidelines for institutions offering BBA, BMS and BCA state that the Council shall regulate management and computer application courses from the academic year 2024-25, and a worked example in the same document marks B.A., B.Sc. and B.Com. as courses that do not fall under the ambit of AICTE. That changes less than it sounds: the same guidance says no change is required in the academic arrangements and examination system, and none in university affiliation, so your internship rules keep coming from the university that will mark you.

The University Grants Commission does name someone. Section 6.2 of the UGC Guidelines for Internship/Research Internship for Under Graduate Students, published in 2023, creates a nodal officer who may be drawn from the institution's research and development cell, with the listed job of reaching out to organisations, making memoranda of understanding, and registering students and host organisations on the portal. An affiliated commerce college with no research and development cell has nobody holding that file.

Where the requirement is written into an institute ordinance rather than a syllabus note, the trail is easier to follow, which is why the internship requirement in a B.Tech programme reads as a firmer rule than this one.

Can an NGO host a BBA or B.Com summer internship?

Yes at some universities, no at others, and your own syllabus decides rather than the organisation. Bangalore University names Non-Govt. Organizations (NGOs) and development agencies outright among acceptable hosts for both degrees. Guru Nanak Dev University's B.Com in Financial Services restricts its four weeks to financial organisations, where a nonprofit would not qualify at all.

The permissive list is worth reading in full. The Bangalore University guidelines for the sixth semester BBA internship accept micro, small, medium and large-scale organisations, sole proprietary and partnership firms, government organisations, government departments and local bodies, public and private sector banks, NGOs, development agencies, and any other organisation with a minimum of four functional departments.

Read the punctuation before you assume the last clause applies to you. The four-functional-departments qualifier sits on the residual category, any other organizations, and NGOs are named separately ahead of it. The B.Com version carries no such qualifier at all. Colleges do read the clause more broadly than it is written, so ask which reading yours applies before approaching a two-person trust.

A second condition gets missed. The area of the internship must be in the fields of commerce and management, and is unconnected to your electives. Accounts, payroll, procurement, donor reporting or campaign analytics count; general helping out does not.

The restrictive case is the warning. The Guru Nanak Dev University syllabus for the 2024 to 2027 B.Com (Financial Services) batch requires four weeks in a bank, finance or insurance company, stock broking house, financial product dealer, or with a chartered accountant, for 2 credits and 50 marks. Read your own list first.

A different regulator sets the equivalent list for law, and the conditions on a self-arranged law internship at a nonprofit host are stricter about who may supervise.

How do you find a host in a town with no corporate presence?

Widen the list of organisation types before you widen the map. The categories a university accepts run well past private companies, and most district towns hold several of each: a cooperative bank, a branch of a nationalised bank, a taluk or block office, a cooperative society, a chartered accountant's practice, a dealership, a registered nonprofit.

Distance is the second lever, not the first. Bangalore University's guidelines say internships can be pursued in any location, anywhere in India or abroad, so the placement is not tied to your college's town if you can live elsewhere for the 90 hours.

Work the approach in this order:

1. Get the eligible-host clause for your own programme in writing before you speak to anyone
2. List every organisation near you that fits an accepted category, not only the ones that sound impressive
3. Approach with a defined functional-area project, not a request for exposure. Say which department you would sit in and what you would produce
4. Confirm before you start that the organisation will sign a completion certificate on letterhead and fill in whatever rating form your college uses
5. Carry your college's permission letter; the university expects the institution to know where you are

The project framing does most of the work. A small organisation that has no idea what an intern is will understand a four-week piece of work with an output: a receipts and payments summary, a donor database cleaned and coded, a costing of one programme, a survey of one product line.

If you cannot secure a physical placement at all, section 7.0(c) of the 2023 UGC guidelines puts the fallback on the institution: where a student fails to get an internship in physical mode, the host institute should have a provision for a digital or group internship. That is a duty on your college, so ask for it in writing rather than arranging around it.

What has to be on the internship certificate for BBA and B.Com students?

The certificate needs two items at a minimum: the period of the internship, and a brief description of the nature of the internship, which Bangalore University glosses as the responsibilities handled. The same guidelines require a second document from the same host, a confidential rating on parameters numbered 1 to 6.

Those parameters are named: regularity to work, attitude towards work, professional competence, ability to interact with other staff and colleagues, and willingness to learn. The report, the certificate and that rating are submitted together to the department of the college you attend, and the rating is worth 10 of the 100 marks.

Other frameworks ask for less on paper. The Karnataka State Higher Education Council framework for BBA semesters V and VI requires only the certificate for completion of internship issued by the organisation, with a brief report of not less than 25 pages. UGC's guidelines make the college's internship supervisor responsible for ensuring completion certificates are issued.

No regulator publishes a proforma for a commerce internship certificate. If the host asks what to write, give it five items on letterhead: your full name and roll number, the exact start and end dates, the department you worked in, a sentence on what you produced, and a signature with the signatory's name, designation and a contact number.

Where your college has its own proforma, that version wins over anything you draft. Ask for it before the internship ends, not after the host has gone quiet.

What does the report have to contain, and how is it marked?

The report runs to four chapters and, at Bangalore University, 70 to 80 pages. Chapter one introduces the organisation through its inception, a SWOC analysis, the nature of the business, the organisational structure and the functional areas. Chapter two sets out the design of the study, chapter three carries the analysis and findings, and chapter four records learning outcomes.

Chapter one is why host choice matters more than it looks. You cannot map an organisational structure and functional areas for an organisation that has neither, whatever your university's host list happens to allow.

The marks are split three ways in the Bangalore University guidelines for the sixth semester B.Com internship: 60 for the internship report, 30 for the presentation and viva-voce, and 10 for the confidential rating given by the company or business establishment. That is 10 marks in a stranger's hands.

The state framework marks the BBA at 30 for the report and 20 for the presentation and viva, conducted at the end of the semester by an external examiner from a panel the college identifies. Chapter four expects a weekly report of work done, so keep a dated log from day one.

Formatting is prescribed down to the font: A4 printed on one side, Times New Roman, chapter headings at 14 point, sub-headings at 12 bold, running text at 12, 1.5 line spacing, a left margin of 1.75 inches and one inch elsewhere, hardbound or spiral, with a hard copy and a PDF to the head of department.

What do you ask the college for, and what if it has published nothing?

Ask for five things in one email, so the answers arrive on record: the syllabus or ordinance clause that creates the internship for your year of admission, the list of organisations accepted as hosts, the certificate and rating proforma if one exists, the report format and page range, and the submission date.

Many affiliated colleges publish none of it. The affiliating university often does, filed by programme rather than by college, so a search on your college's name returns nothing while the university site carries the document. Bangalore University issues one set for B.Com and a separate set for BBA.

Read the one that matches your degree. The B.Com and BBA sets are close but not identical: only the BBA version closes its host list with the four-functional-departments qualifier, and only the B.Com version adds cooperative societies and publishes the 100-mark break-up.

Where two current documents disagree, ask which one your examination is being marked under. The state council's BBA table gives the internship two credits and 50 marks; the university's guidelines set 90 hours and three credits while citing that same council. Both documents are live, and only one of them is being applied to your marks sheet.

If no reply comes, put the request for the clause number to the head of department in writing and keep the copy. A refusal to name a document is itself information: the college is working from custom rather than a rule, and custom changes between the day you start and the day you submit.
