Do IIMs and ISB look at social-sector work? What their own admission policies say
Short answer
No, not as scored work experience, when it was an internship or unpaid. IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta exclude internships and unpaid work from their work-experience points, and the exclusions name the arrangement and not the employer. IIM Ahmedabad names extracurricular achievements at final selection, and ISB says it seeks community and societal contributions in the profile it scores.

Is NGO work considered work experience for an MBA?
IIM Bangalore settles the narrow version of this question in one sentence. Its published PGP (MBA) 2026-28 admission procedure says that in scoring work experience, "no consideration is given to any time spent as an intern, either during or after the course of study in a programme, or any periods of apprenticeship such as articleship required as part of certain professional courses, or any unpaid work undertaken in any organization or institution."
The exclusion turns on the arrangement rather than the employer. The clause names no employer type, so a paid full-time job at a non-profit is scored in months there, like any other job. Two summer months as an intern at a non-profit are not, and neither are two summer months as an intern at a bank.
The rest of the answer sits in a different part of these processes: the interview, the essays, and the attributes an institute says it weighs after the shortlist is drawn. Each institute publishes its own policy, and they do not agree.
What does IIM Ahmedabad's admission policy say it scores?
Its Admission Policy for the PGP 2027-29 batch builds an application rating from five inputs and nothing else: class 10 percentage, class 12 percentage, undergraduate percentage, gender, and full-time work experience as reported in the CAT form. No activity of any kind enters that arithmetic. The normalised rating carries 35% of the composite score, and the CAT total percentile carries the other 65%; a second normalisation of that composite is what draws the shortlist.
Work experience is scored on its own small scale there. Under 12 months earns zero. Between 12 and 36 months, the score is 0.20 multiplied by the number of months minus eleven. Above 36 months it is capped at five points, and non-male candidates receive three points for gender diversity.
Two steps sit between that composite and the shortlist. The raw composite score is normalised a second time inside your undergraduate discipline, by dividing it by the average of the top 1% of raw composite scores within that discipline, and the policy sets a floor of 5 and a ceiling of 100 scores in that top 1% so that thinly populated disciplines still work. You are ranked against people who studied what you studied, before any percentile gate is applied.
Only after that normalisation does IIMA apply its CAT cut-offs. For General and EWS candidates who are not PwD, the 2027-29 table requires a 95 overall percentile and 85 in each of VARC, DILR and QA; the figures fall to 90 and 80 for NC-OBC, 85 and 75 for SC, 75 and 65 for ST, and lower again for PwD candidates.
Activities appear one stage later. After the Analytical Writing Test and the personal interview, the policy says final selection "is based on a diverse set of attributes, including performance in CAT, AWT & PI, academics, co-curricular and extracurricular achievements, work experience, etc."
The same document then says IIMA "exercises its own discretion in disclosing the weights assigned to the diverse set of attributes assessed in the personal interview". So co-curricular and extracurricular achievements are named, they are weighed in the interview, and how heavily is not published. Anyone who quotes you a percentage for them is quoting something IIMA has not printed.
One more number from the same policy is worth carrying into the interview. IIMA weights its final composite at 0.50 on the normalised personal interview score, 0.10 on the normalised AWT score and 0.40 on the normalised composite from the earlier stage. That puts the interview alone at half of the final number.
Where does IIM Bangalore put social-sector work?
IIMB publishes its weights at both stages, and activities are not among them. At the pre-interview stage the components are CAT 55, class 10 board score 10, class 12 board score 10, bachelor's score 10, work experience or professional course 10, and gender diversity 5. Work experience scores ten times the months divided by 36, up to a maximum of ten for three years or more, and the 2026-28 document counts those months up to July 2025.
After the interview the weights change to personal interview 40, written ability test 10, CAT 25, the three academic scores at 5 each, and work experience or professional course 10. Gender diversity drops out entirely at this stage.
The post-interview rules decide how a non-profit job is treated. The work experience weight is scaled down from 10 to 5 after the interview, and that score is multiplied by the average of the quality of experience scores, which each member of the interview panel rates on a five-point scale of 0.25, 0.5, 1, 1.5 or 2. Quality is judged by that panel, and nowhere in this document is the sector named as a factor in it.
IIMB also requires two reference letters with the application, preferably from an employer, current or past, or from a teacher. A supervisor at a non-profit who reviewed your work week by week can write one of those.
What does IIM Calcutta's table include, and what does it leave out?
IIM Calcutta's admission procedure for domestic candidates for the MBA batch of 2026-28 shortlists on a composite of 85 points: CAT 56, class 10 marks 10, class 12 marks 15, and 4 points for gender diversity, awarded to female and transgender candidates. Work experience does not appear in that table at all. A percentile gate comes before it: for the open category the first stage asks for 85 or above overall, and 80 in VARC, 80 in DILR and 75 in QA.
It appears in the final stage, where the 100 points run: personal interview 48, CAT 30, writing ability test 8, work experience 8 and academic diversity 6. The exclusion is spelled out in the same document: "Internship/apprenticeship/articleship/training/project/work done as an integral part of curricular requirement or any type of unpaid work will not be considered." Only experience after the bachelor's degree is counted, in completed months, and for this cycle the count runs to 31 January 2026.
Between them, these three policies agree on the mechanical question. IIM Ahmedabad scores only full-time work experience, and IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta exclude internships and unpaid work by name, so an internship at a non-profit earns no points in any of their published scoring tables. At all three, the interview is the largest single component of the final score.
How does ISB treat community and social work?
ISB draws its line somewhere else. On its PGP eligibility and requirements page, the note under the work experience section reads: "The PGP is designed for students who have full-time work experience of a minimum of 24 months, and the Admissions Office looks for this as a requisite in candidates prior to enrolment."
Final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students, and professionals with less than two years of work experience, may apply directly to the PGP YL programme instead, and the page says the deferred entry routes that used to serve them have been discontinued. So the same distinction reaches you: an internship is not the two years.
What the page adds is a route the IIM policies do not have. It says that "all aspects of your profile are given due weightage to arrive at a final profile score", and that the school seeks "significant milestones and community/societal contributions that have influenced your development".
That sentence sits in the section titled Awards and Recognition rather than in an essay prompt, and the writing is where a candidate answers it.
Two essays of 400 words each are required. The leadership essay asks what unique experiences have shaped who you are and what they taught you about leadership. The learning approach essay asks which intellectual experiences influenced how you learn and led you to pursue an MBA. An optional 250-word essay invites intellectual pursuits, unique perspectives or experiences that shaped your worldview, and asks how they could potentially contribute to the school's learning community.
Nothing in those prompts asks for a sector. They ask what the experience did to you and what you did with it, which is a question a two-month stint can answer only if something specific happened in it.
What if you are applying straight out of college with nothing?
Then the work-experience component is a zero you share with a large part of the pool, and none of the three IIM policies penalises you beyond that. IIM Ahmedabad scores zero below twelve months. IIM Bangalore's formula gives ten times the months divided by 36, which is nothing at all when the months are nothing. IIM Calcutta counts only post-degree months, so you start where every other fresher starts.
What changes is where your case gets made. With no months to score, the interview carries the load it always carried, and the material you bring to it is whatever you have actually done: a project with a result, a role in a campus body with a number attached, work for an organisation outside college.
That argument is easier to make when the work is described the way employers describe work, and hiring survey data on what a degree is worth next to time on the job is covered in its own guide.
Which NGO certificate has value in an MBA interview?
No scoring table at any of the four gives a certificate a weight. What they score is months of paid full-time work, board and degree percentages, CAT sections, essays, references and an interview. A certificate is evidence that a period happened, which matters when you claim it, and it carries no weight of its own.
What does travel into the interview room is the account you can give. Half of IIMA's final composite and 48 of IIM Calcutta's 100 points come from the personal interview, and a panel works from your form and your answers to it. A line about an education non-profit invites a question, and the question will be about what you did.
So the useful preparation is not a better-branded certificate. Write down the target you were given, the method, the number you ended with, one decision you got wrong, and what the organisation did with your output. That is the same material behind what a hiring manager takes from one NGO line on a CV, set out at greater length.
How do the four compare on one page?
Compare them on three things you can check before you apply: whether an internship earns work-experience points, where social-sector work can enter the process at all, and whether the institute publishes a weight for it.
| Institute | Internship counts as work experience | Where social-sector work can enter | Published weight for activities |
|---|---|---|---|
| IIM Ahmedabad, PGP 2027-29 | No, only full-time work experience is scored | Co-curricular and extracurricular achievements at final selection | Not disclosed |
| IIM Bangalore, PGP 2026-28 | No, internships and unpaid work excluded | Personal interview, worth 40 of the post-interview weights, and references | None published |
| IIM Calcutta, MBA 2026-28 | No, internships and unpaid work excluded | Personal interview, worth 48 of 100 at final selection | None published |
| ISB, PGP | No, 24 months of full-time experience is the design | Two 400-word essays and the profile score | Holistic, no weight published |
The arithmetic that produces your shortlist is made of CAT, boards, degree marks and paid months. Everything else you have done is argued, in an essay or across a table.
What is worth doing with the months before CAT and the interviews?
Pick work that generates a number and a document, and keep your own record of both while it happens. A term spent cleaning a four-year donor sheet, running a small survey, or writing the notes from nine field visits gives you something to describe in April that a panel can follow up on. A term spent attending events gives you a sentence that dies in one question.
Timing is worth thinking about. IIM Ahmedabad's policy marks both of its dates as tentative: the AWT and PI shortlist tentatively in the second week of January 2027, and offers of admission tentatively in the second week of April 2027. Work finished before the CAT results are out is work you can describe with the numbers settled. Anything you start in March competes with your own interview preparation.
For candidates already in an MBA programme, the summer between the two years is a different decision with its own trade-offs, and the choice between a corporate slot, a startup and a social-sector term turns on placement rules rather than admission policy.
One caution on forum advice. IIM Bangalore prints on its own document that the information applies to the 2026-28 cycle alone and that it reserves the right to change or replace the process at any point, and the numbers above are the ones printed for the 2026-28 and 2027-29 batches. Before you rely on a weight, open the institute's policy document for the year you are applying in and check the table yourself.

Does a paid job at an NGO count as work experience for the IIMs?
Yes. The exclusions in the published policies are about internships, articleship, curricular projects and unpaid work, not about the type of employer. A salaried full-time role at a registered non-profit is counted in completed months like any other job, with payslips and letters as evidence.
Do the IIMs ask for proof of work experience?
Yes. IIM Bangalore lists work experience letters and the first and last payslips among the documents to be submitted, and warns that a candidate found to have given incorrect information about work experience will be barred from applying to any IIMB programme for three years.
Does CAT percentile alone decide the shortlist?
No. At IIM Bangalore, CAT carries 55 of the pre-interview weights, with the other 45 spread across board and degree marks, work experience and gender diversity. At IIM Ahmedabad, the CAT total percentile carries 65% of the raw composite score and the application rating the remaining 35%.
Is there a minimum CAT percentile to be considered at these institutes?
Each publishes its own cut-offs. IIM Ahmedabad's policy for PGP 2027-29 sets a 95 overall percentile for General and EWS candidates who are not PwD, with 85 in each of VARC, DILR and QA. IIM Calcutta's first stage for 2026-28 asks the open category for 85 or above overall, with sectional minimums of 80 in VARC, 80 in DILR and 75 in QA.
Can I write about NGO work in the ISB essays if it was only a few weeks?
You can, if something specific came out of it. The 400-word leadership essay asks what experiences shaped you and what they taught you about leadership. A short stint with a named target, a method and a result answers that; attendance at events does not.
Does gender diversity still apply after the interview?
Not everywhere. IIM Bangalore states that the gender diversity component applies only to the pre-interview score and is not used at the next stage. IIM Calcutta awards 4 points for female and transgender candidates in its shortlisting composite of 85.
